Ohio Afd's

Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles, I've found some Ohio-related articles that I believe are about places, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.

The articles in question are listed in Category:Ohio articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:

...and there are many more, as well. At the time of posting this notice, there were 542 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.

Why add coordinates?

By adding coordinates, a Wikipedia reader can easily view the location on a street map, nautical chart, topographic map, by satellite photo, realtime weather map, and in many other ways. Coordinate data makes an article eventually appear in various services such as Google Maps' Wikipedia overlay, Google Earth, and Wikipedia's own internal map service. Coordinate data also helps readers looking for geographically-based data, such as locations near a reference point, or related information.

How can I do it?

The articles are all marked with {{coord missing|Ohio}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox. You can find out how to do this at the Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members. Please let me know if this is useful, or if you have any questions! -- §hep¡Talk to me! 16:35, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ohio articles needing geographic coordinates

56 articles in Category:Ohio articles missing geocoordinate data do not have geographic coordinates. Coords are useful for making the article appear on Google Maps & many other mapping services; and they allow our users to click through to see the article subject location on a map. There's a short guide to on how to add geocodes to articles ... it really is very easy to do. I hope you'll take some time to ensure that Ohio is as well represented as it can be on wikipedia by fixing up the listed articles. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:36, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article alerts

A new bot has been subscribed to that will update an article alerts page. This page will include information on current Afds, FACs, GANs, and more. When the page is operational we will get a link to it. This sounds like it should be pretty useful. §hep¡Talk to me! 19:40, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See also Recent changes to Ohio-related articles
You may have noticed a new tab added at the top. It shows all recent changes to articles marked with our project tag. The other link did our article category, so would be accurate as to what is tagged, but only showed Talk: pages. Hope you guys find this new page helpful! If not please nix it. §hep¡Talk to me! 00:22, 7 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Transclusions

If you're intersted in having our alerts placed elsewhere just add {{Wikipedia:WikiProject Ohio/Article alerts}} wherever you wish. If you're interested in following just certain workflows you can transclude {{Wikipedia:WikiProject Ohio/Good workflow/Article alerts}}, {{Wikipedia:WikiProject Ohio/Featured workflow/Article alerts}}, {{Wikipedia:WikiProject Ohio/Deletion sorting/Article alerts}}, {{Wikipedia:WikiProject Ohio/Other workflow/Article alerts}}. With details on what each conatins on their respective pages. §hep¡Talk to me! 04:48, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Member activity

Another bot has been signed to to that task of monitoring member activity. The list can be found here. I'd like to propse all users that have not edited within the last 6 months and longer be notified of the following actions:

  • All members that have not edited within the last six months will remain as members
  • Members that have not edited within the last year will be removed from the member list and hidden as 3 of our other members are
  • Users who wish to rejoin in the project/activity can readd their names at any time §hep¡Talk to me! 19:40, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Participants page layout

I was wondering what you guys thought about remodeling the participants page. It could be a wiki-sortable table, with columns of {{User}}, Description left, and location if they listed it on either the page or their userspace. That way if someone wants to contact someone in Akron to see if they can take a picture for an article. They can click the sort button for city and have them all sorted right there. Current members would then be notified of the changes so they can fill out the rest of the table for the name if they wish. Thoughts? §hep¡Talk to me! 19:40, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Page needing updated

Could anyone here help me update United States House of Representatives elections in Ohio, 2008, {{OH-FedRep}}, and the other Ohio election-related pages. Including the pages of all the runners? §hep¡Talk to me! 22:57, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

All done by now. §hep¡Talk to me! 04:43, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A new Ohio DYK

Just thought I would mention that I created an Ohio related article which recently appeared on the mainpage DYK section. I added it into the box on our project DYK page, but have no idea what is being done with the full list business below it for the Portal. Not something I've ever worked with. -- PEPSI2786talk 05:48, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Did you know?

Very cool! I'll pop it into the portal system. §hep¡Talk to me! 05:57, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A list of our most popular pages has been generated. Here. The list has been cropped to those articles that get 100+ views a day. §hep¡Talk to me! 22:35, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FAR Warren County Canal

I have nominated Warren County Canal for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Tom B (talk) 12:20, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We have completed bios for all Civil War articles

See List of Ohio's American Civil War generals; all the articles are now blue-linked. We have completed more than fifty Civil War generals this year to finish off the list as planned by the end of December 2008. 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry (talk) 01:01, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! That's a great job, I'll be interested to read the additions and the article as I've never happened past it. §hep¡Talk to me! 03:13, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Review department

A peer review/A-Class review has been started up at WP:OH/R. My hope is that we can get the active project members to participate in these as they come up. §hep¡Talk to me! 04:50, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kevin Boyce

Hey guys. I've started a quick article on Kevin Boyce in one of my subpages. Would someone be able to do some more digging and fact-checking before this goes live? He's expected to be officially appointed tonight. If you see anything that would be useful, or something I wrote up that looks wrong please go ahead and fix it. ICYDK he's supposed to be the new Treasurer after Cordray got Attorney General. §hep¡Talk to me! 18:23, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone think this might make it through DYK?

To whom it may concern,

I was recently adding external links to my website www.lorain.com that serves all of Lorain County, OH. We offer news, real estate, classifieds, personals, job listings, events, business directory, city guides, coupons, contests, and fundraisers for local non-profit organizations throughout Lorain County.

After adding several links I was told that I can no longer add any further links because I was adding to many, would be my guess. However, I feel that offering an external link to www.lorain.com on Wikipedia would benefit your site visitors as well. These external links would only be posted on Lorain County cities and villiages, as these are the only people it would benefit.

I appreciate your time on this matter and look forward to your response. (Loraincom (talk) 13:15, 17 January 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Our guidlines on this matter (WP:EL#ADV, WP:LINKFARM, and WP:NOTADVERTISING) are quite clear. Further, Wikipedia is not a directory. External links are to be used for locations of further information not yet included in the article (e.g. a link to an entry from a relaible source on the history of Lorain County). External links should also be directly related to the topic, not just generally related because the topic of the article happens to be in Lorain County. A link to your personal company's website is a conflict of interest. I would not advise continuing to add it. Please do feel free to expand our articles with sourced information from reliable sources that is written in your own words. --Rkitko (talk) 14:47, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your candor, and will not post any futher links. Please be advised that there is another local website similar to www.lorain.com currently being shown in the city of Lorain's Wikipedia called www.loraincounty.com please make sure that this link is removed as well. Obviously if we cannot show our external link on Wikipedia this link would be viewed as inappropriate as well.(Loraincom (talk) 16:09, 17 January 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Agreed on the other link; it is also inappropriate. I removed that link from the Elyria, Ohio article, but missed it on Lorain, Ohio. I've removed it now. Thanks for pointing it out. Cheers, Rkitko (talk) 16:52, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I found a few more check out Avon, OH and Avon Lake, OH and remove these links as well. Thanks [[[User:Loraincom|Loraincom]] (talk) 17:36, 17 January 2009 (UTC)][reply]

If there's a problem you see, you can edit the articles and remove the links. Point back to this discussion in your summary if you get any trouble for removing the spam. §hepTalk 22:50, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ohio Memory Project

Some possible sources if you're looking for freely-licensed photos for city articles:

Make sure to use only the photos explicitly dated before 1923!

 – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 10:47, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Great resources! I must also caution that many of these photos were never published, so even though they may be dated before 1923, they would not be public domain unless they were published before 1923. For those interested in the distinction if you're going to use these photos, see the description at {{PD-US}}. Cheers, Rkitko (talk) 14:00, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

User Nyttend vs. Elmore, Ohio

User Nyttend repeatedly makes bad edits (albeit generally with good intentions) on the Elmore, Ohio page. His edits have consistently stuck to "factual" sources which are not quite as sound as he imagines. Not much we can do to change that. But he no longer allows any edit to the page by taking advantage of the fact that the average citizen of Elmore does not know the proper format.

If there were an editor to take his place who was actually concerned with making the Elmore, Ohio page accurate, that editor would probably spend less time denying that rivers and creeks which run through town exist. He would also spend less time calling the Elmore Car "silliness" when it was, in fat, a fairly noteworthy historical contribution made by the community.

I do not know how Wikipedia works in terms of editors, but if any of you are established contributors with any pull... and a desire for the Ohio wiki to be accurate, it would certainly be nice if you could help this user understand why his edits are not as productive as he thinks.
