David Linden page

Hi. I started the entry on David Linden that you flagged, and it has since been edited by me and by at least one other person. I was wondering whether some of your concerns had been addressed. If Linden passes notability now (or if he might), could you tell me how to fix the problem of his last name beginning with a lower-case letter? I haven't figured that issue out. I fixed the title. See Help:Moving a page for information on how to change the title of a page. While I'm here, I'll fix up the formatting a bit as well. As for the article issues, some of them have been addressed, so I'll modify the notice accordingly. And I'd guess you still are. ;) Wikipedia doesn't have the most newcomer-friendly interface, unfortunately. Also, on the scale of mistakes, posting a question to the wrong page is pretty minor when you compare it to the poor folks over at the village stocks. Hint: Don't delete the main page, crashing the servers is a bad thing, Jimbo Wales should not be blocked, and the correct title for the administrators' noticeboard is not "Wikipedia:BWAHAHAHAH". On the subject of the David Linden article again, I got rather absorbed in editing and ended up making a lot of changes, including deleting a whole section. I don't think so, except maybe the references to Joy McCann's blog, Little Miss Attila--though blog quotes are probably dicey in the first place. The one thing that's tricky about Linden is that because of The Accidental Mind I'm not sure he should be judged strictly as an academic, since as a "popularizer of neuroscience" he might also be sort of a pop-culture figure as well. Not sure.

I didn't add any references, just formatted the external links that were already there into references with link titles. I agree that blog references are often problematic, thus why I left a {{refimprove}} tag on there. I think he would still be considered primarily an academic, though I'm not entirely sure either. Hi, Pyro--I tried to upload a picture to the David Linden page, I don't think I did it right, because it didn't appear. It's a picture I took myself, and I'm perfectly willing to "donate" it to Wikipedia. But I'm not sure I came up with the right way to express it. Also, I think I need to downsize the thing and then re-upload it.

Any help or advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Or perhaps there's another editor who can help me with both the technical and the legal issues surrounding the uploading of images? Somewhere in the "quality standards" material I read that Pictures Are a Good Thing, but I have no idea how to get them to work. All best, Scooge (talk) 05:50, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You successfully uploaded the picture to Wikipedia, and it is located at Image:Linden2007.JPG. To put it in the David Linden page, you will need to place [[Image:Linden2007.JPG]] where you want it to appear in the article. See Help:Images and other uploaded files for the technical documentation on how to use images.
However, before including the image in any article, you first need to fix the copyright issues with the image. All images on Wikipedia must be public domain, licensed under a free license, or used under the guidelines for non-free content as fair use. The license tag on the image states that it is licensed under the CC-BY-SA 3.0, an acceptable free license. However, the summary you provided states: "Taken by Joy McCann; loaned to Wikipedia for its exclusive use; copyright still held by Joy McCann, 2007." This seems to imply that the image is being provided for use by Wikipedia only, contrary to Wikipedia:Image use policy, which states:
The reason for this is that images on Wikipedia are meant to be reused widely, and images licensed for Wikipedia use only limit that. What you need to do is one of the following:
  1. Remove the note under the "Summary" heading stating that copyright is still held, and note in your summary that you do, in fact, release it under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license as the Licensing section states. The image may then be used without restriction on Wikipedia.
  2. Change the template used under the "Licensing" section to note that it is not under a free license and that it is being used only under fair use. In that case, you must write a fair use rationale explaining why it meets the criteria for non-free content. You will then be able to use the image only on articles specified in the rationale; likely, this will limit its use to the David Linden article only.
  3. If you do not intend to do either of the above, the image cannot be used on Wikipedia. In this case, please place {{db-author}} at the top of the image page and an administrator will delete the image from Wikipedia.
Since Wikipedia is a free content project, the first option—releasing the image under a free license—is generally preferred. The second option of creating a fair use rationale for the image is difficult; fair use images must have no free equivalent that is available or could be created. Since you were able to take this picture yourself, a free version could almost certainly be created.

Assessments of examples for the 1.0 scale

Hi Pyrospirit, thanks a lot for the assessment script, and also for your contribution to the rollout of C-Class. I would like several people to check over a random set of articles from the Start to B range, and rank them, in order to generate a carefully assessed set of examples. It's done by a set of pairwise comparisons on an Excel file with a macro (which I'd email to you), and it should take less than an hour. If you're able to do this, please can you let me know? The macro steps you through all of the possible article pairs, and you judge which of the two is better (in assessment terms). Then at the end, it will generate a ranking for all the articles based on how you judged them. The macro was written by User:Holon as part of his professional work. Can I send it to you by email? Template messages in my userspace

Hi, I found you via the userbox you have regarding template creation, I was wondering if you could help me regarding some template messages I have created in my userspace

Do you know if there's any way to make the reference to leave a message on "my" talk page (which is directly linked to my own) refer to the talk page of whichever user adds the template message to a talk page instead of the standard non-wikilinked leave a message?

I don't believe that it's technically possible to do this under the current software. What you can do instead is add a template parameter where you can enter your own username manually each time; it's not ideal, but if there's an easier way, I don't know it. To demonstrate what I'm talking about, I've done this at User:BigHairRef/GAFail. Go ahead and revert it if you don't want to use this method. Sig Help?

Can you help with my signature.. I have my own template (Template:Royalmate1/Signature) but all I get is this:

When I sign... Is this the right code to upload it from the template, or is it something completely different? Help as soon as you can :) Royalmate1

Using a template for your signature can place a heavy load on the servers under some circumstances, so I believe MediaWiki automatically prevents you from using templates in your signature. Just paste the contents of Template:Royalmate1/Signature into the signature box in Special:Preferences, then stop using the template. HELP

I have spent the last several days adding images to the page International decoration . The idea was to add some 40 further images to what was already there for free information for all to see now I note that it has all bee destroyed, basically vandalised by EHDI5YS. I have tried to find out about the culpret only to find that such a person does not exist (has a red link)

First, nothing has been destroyed. The MediaWiki software keeps a permanent record of every revision made to every page, so it takes only a few seconds to restore any past version. See Help:Page history for more information.
Second, the person who made the changes, User:EHDI5YS, does exist. His userpage is a red link because he does not have a userpage, but the account still exists. You can look at a list of all edits by this user at Special:Contributions/EHDI5YS.
Third, EHDI5YS did not "vandalize" your work. He explained why he removed some of your changes at Talk:International decoration. His reasoning is that the list should only include those recognized by and awarded to members of the United States military. This is not a matter of vandalism, but a simple matter of disagreement over the scope of the article which should be resolved by discussion on the article's talk page. Rollback

Hi there,

I am not using it as content dispute tool, i have seen other people use it to use undo edits that wrong so i started to do the same, am i am right in saying this is not meant to be done? just undoing say 9 edits when 7 are are vandalism is very hard and time consuming.--Andrewcrawford (talk) 09:04, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi i have just used the rollback on the page list of galactik football episode but i like to check and make sure i have done it it right ie i have done it for clear vandalism and i am not sure that what was done by the ip user would be vandalism as i am still a bit unclear but the ip user did make the page form 20 odd kb down to nearly nothing over two moves, if this is what is meant by vandlism or adding very bad remarks to a page then i now understand wikipedia vandalism. thank andrew :)--Andrewcrawford (talk) 19:02, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Arena Petrol

Hi, I've seen your name at WP:ASSIST and would like to ask you for assistance/informal mediation regarding Arena Petrol. Someone called User:XJamRastafire has been insisting on changing the article to the contrary of what WP:MOS says, namely linking years to lists of trivia for no good reason and adding a flag for just purely decorative reasons. AFAIK, this should be avoided per WP:CONTEXT and WP:ICON. I know this should be a minor issue, but it has unfortunately become a big one since the conflict started and I'd rather discuss than edit war. Sorry for the slow response on this. Looking at the article history and the relevant style guidelines, it seems correct not to include flag icons and date links at those places in the article. It doesn't look like anything more needs to be done at this point, as the matter seems to have been worked out on the talk page already. Scriptpackage

Hey, i m using your script package but i am having problem in tagging articles and welcoming users. Could you please help in this regard that how can i do corect it. I haven't been maintaining that script package for a while, and looking back at it, it contains some scripts that I no longer use myself. I suggest installing Friendly as a gadget. See if that fixes the problem, since Friendly is the script that provides the interface for tagging articles and welcoming users. Don't forget to remove it from your monobook.js when you turn on the gadget version.
I also recommend that you uninstall Outriggr's metadata script (User:Outriggr/metadata.js), which is no longer maintained. You can replace it with the metadata gadget at MediaWiki:Gadget-metadata.js, a heavily modified version of the script that I maintain. It has a number of improvements over the original, such as detecting more types of assessments, better compatibility with other scripts, and giving information on things such as featured or good article nominations and peer reviews. Hi, I noticed the needs sources tag was re added to the page. There are a couple major sources at the bottom, but I agree that it could use about 3 or so more, so I left the 'needs more sources' tag. Your Beautiful Metadata Template

Hey, I use your metadata template on the English Wikipedia already. It's not available in any other project, and I was hoping that you could give me some advice on translating it into French. If you're not familiar with their grading system, it is as follows:

  • Featured article (FA) → Article de qualité (AdQ)
  • A-class (A) → Avancement A (A)
  • Good article (GA) → Bon article (BA)
  • B-class (B) → Avancement B (B)
  • Start-class (Start) → Bon début (BD)
  • Stub-class (Stub) → Ébauche

I don't think it would be too hard to translate the script to French. To get it functioning, I would just need to modify the regular expressions for the French grading system and templates. I don't speak French, so someone else would have to translate the content that's displayed to users.
Also, could you link to the French equivalent of the {{ArticleHistory}}, {{FAC}}, {{GA nominee}}, and {{FLC}} templates? The metadata script uses these to find information on the article's current and past FA, FL, and GA status, nominations, and history, so it'd help to know these. I do know, though, that GA nominations (AdQ) are combined with FA nominations (BA). Thus, in the subpage, someone can say that they want to improve it for FA or GA. If there's no template equivalent for {{ArticleHistory}} at the French Wikipedia, some parts of the script won't work there. I looked at some featured/good articles at fr:, and it looks like the templates for current featured/good article nominees are on the article page rather than the talk page. (I used fr:Philippe Bozon and fr:Ouragan Noel to examine how the templates are used.) It appears that fr:Modèle:Article potentiellement bon and fr:Modèle:Article potentiellement de qualité are used like {{GAN}} and {{FAC}}, respectively, except that they are placed on the article page. Since that information is already available from the article page without the script (unless I'm mistaken about the use of those templates), I'll remove the functionality designed to detect those.

A few more questions about assessment:
  • What is the equivalent of peer review, if any?
  • Are list, current, and future used as assessments like they are here?
  • Are there are any talk page templates equivalent to {{FAR}}, {{FLRC}}, and {{GAR}} for quality reviews?
  • Are there talk page templates to keep track of former AdQ's or BA's, such as {{FormerFA2}}, {{FFL}}, and {{DGA}}?
  • Is there any status for lists equivalent to featured lists?

  • As far as I can see, it is Comité de lecture.
  • I don't believe so, no.
  • No, I don't think those templates exist on the French Wikipedia.
  • I don't think those exist either. I'm sorry, I honestly think the English Wikipedia is way more advanced in that sense.
  • No, I don't even think lists are counted on the assessment scale there.

Alright, thanks for answering all those questions. No need to apologize; a simpler assessment system actually made things quite a bit easier for me.
I have the French version of the script at User:Pyrospirit/metadata-fr.js and User:Pyrospirit/metadata-fr.css. Some of the translations I was able to figure out from context, but some is still untranslated. The things that still need translating are all in the function that starts with MetadataScript.prototype.talkAssess, on the lines that start with slogan =. All of the links should be translated already (hopefully correctly). Other than that, it should be ready for use at the French Wikipedia. Hey, it works with one exception. On the French Wikipedia, they automatically set it to hide on all pages, so when I re-showed it in my CSS, it shows up on the Main Page, which I don't like too much. I also noticed that the new pages that have no rating don't show any text except for "Un article de Wikipédia, l'encyclopédie libre." I programmed it to say "Un article à évaluer de Wikipedia, l'encyclopédie libre." It shouldn't load on the main page; I'm not sure what's going on there. I added a line that should fix that. I also figured out why it was displaying the wrong text and fixed that, along with another bug. You shouldn't have to mess with the CSS yourself, since the script will do that automatically now. There's a new version of the script at User:Pyrospirit/metadata-fr.js that has these fixes along with your translations.
Also, I recommend that you create a separate page for it at the French Wikipedia aside from your monobook.js page. That will allow other people to use the script more easily by importing it, and it will keep your monobook.js page less cluttered. It'd probably be a good idea to do the same for the stylesheet.

Renaming CSS classes

Since you're the only one I know who actually uses the CSS classes assess-FA, assess-Category, etc, that I added to the {{FA-Class}}, {{Category-Class}}, etc, templates, you deserve a personal notification :D. As suggested at WP:VPT#Renaming CSS classes, I want to change the classnames to be entirely lowercase, that is assess-fa, assess-category, etc. I'm having a second shot at implementing the backgrounds entirely using CSS, and having them in lowercase will make it much easier to follow on from that to do things like make one unified {{class}} template that can be case-insensitive without doing any filtering on the class input to work out which case it should be in. Your script doesn't AFAIK use the classes I'm actually talking about, but you might want to rename your parallel assess-FA-text, assess-Category-text classes to match. Boldfaced title in the lead

Liberty High

The new, unsourced additions to Liberty Senior High School are getting out of control. Most of the claims made on the page have no source whatsoever, and the ones that do are improperly cited. I noticed that you have edited it before and would like to know what to do. Rather than revert, I have attempted to contact the anonymous user and discuss it on the talk page. I'll try cleaning up the article. Some of the unsourced claims in the article aren't encyclopedic in nature or tone anyway, so those can just be removed. Problems with the assessment script

Hi,

The assessment script appears to have some interactin issues with [[WP:TW}}.

I have it turned on as a gadget, and have noticed that when doing NP patrol, the csd and xfd tabs from TW are missing. Turning off the assesment script allows TW to work normally.

The problem occurs only on articles that have no corresponding talk page (which is most new pages), and it is throwing the following error; assess.pageLink is undefined line 272 Mayalld (talk) 22:52, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Same happening for me. I designed the assessment script to avoid script incompatibilities, so more likely it's just an error in the assessment script breaking everything below it. I'll work on fixing it, but it might take me some time—I just switched operating systems and have yet to transfer all of my files, including the script's source code. Need help, someone vandalise my user/sandbox page

I ask some help to you because someone vadalise-deleted my user/sandbox page User:Drokstef/Sandbox under some strange motives and i don't have any idea how could someone do something like that, i mean delete a article on my page, an article which i've worked a lot of it and it has all the notable reasons to stay up.
