The Playboy Mansion (also known as the Playboy Mansion West out of deference to the original Playboy Mansion that was located in Chicago at 1340 N. State Street: Chicago, IL, 60610-6103), is located in the Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles, California and is the home of Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner and is one of the most famous residences in California. The mansion's address is 10236 Charing Cross Rd., Los Angeles, CA 90024.

The 21,987 sq ft (2,042.7 m2) house is described as being in the "Gothic-Tudor" style by Forbes magazine, and sits on 5.3 acres (21,000 m2). It was built by architect Arthur R. Kelly in 1927 and acquired by Playboy from Louis D. Statham, a wealthy engineer, inventor and chess aficionado, in 1971 for $1.1 million (~$5.5 million in 2007 dollars).[1] It sits close to the extreme northwestern corner of the exclusive Los Angeles Country Club, near UCLA and the Bel-Air Country Club. Over the years, approximately $15 million has been invested in renovating and expanding the mansion and the current market value of the home is $50 million.

The mansion has 29 rooms including a wine cellar, a game room, a private zoo and aviary (and related pet cemetery), tennis courts, a waterfall and a large swimming pool area (including a patio and barbecue area, the famous grotto, a sauna and a bathhouse). These features and many others have been frequently showcased on television.

The game room, a separate building on the property's north side, is more properly called a game house. From the fountain in front of the main entrance, there are two sidewalks, which run past a wishing-well. The sidewalk on the right leads to the game house and runs past a Hollywood Star of Hugh Hefner. Its front entrance opens to a game room with a pool table in the center. This room has a number of vintage and modern arcade games, pinball machines, player piano, jukebox, television, stereo, and couch. The game house has two wings. Walking to the left, one finds a room with a soft cushioned floor, mirrors all around, television, and an exit. There is also a restroom with a shower. The right wing of the game house has a smaller restroom, and entrance to a bedroom. This bedroom is also connected to another bedroom, which has an exit to the rear backyard of the game house. The game house has a backyard with lounge chairs, and gates on either side.

Hefner's Private Attic Study, Playboy Mansion West: In a hidden corner of an unused attic space tucked beneath the eaves of the Playboy Mansion West in Holmby Hills, California, a secret and very private study alcove was created for Hugh Hefner. Hand adzed English Brown Oak paneling with antique leaded glass windows were designed to replicate the character of the original 16th century English Tudor Manor House woodwork. A carved spiral stair leads down to his Master Bedroom and Living spaces below. It was here that he usually retreated to work long hours daily on writing and editing each copy of his Playboy Magazine.

Hefner's new Master Bedroom Suite and The Draped Bed Enclosure: This original detailed design concept drawing of the draped bed enclosure and his private, personal living suite is illustrated ... set in the historical context of a 16th century English Tudor Manor House. The draped bed enclosure itself is nestled next to a new sculptured and carved Vicenza stone fireplace placed at 90 degrees and directly adjacent to the bed ... a typical plan in the 16th century. Carved sculptured casework and millwork in English Brown Oak with exotic inlaid marquetry and parquetry surround the space embracing the myriad electronic controls, video and film projection equipment. 9 wood carvers and sculptors work nearly 5 years to create all of this remarkable custom designed woodwork for this remarkable man.

These were the exact words of direction and encouragement uttered by Hefner in describing what he wanted us to design and build for him at his new Playboy Mansion West in Holmby Hills:

“I would like this place to be something that nobody else has, and everybody can dream of having: a fantasy land, a dream land, just like my philosophy about Playboy Magazine. And when it is finished it should look as though it has been here forever. And remember, whatever you show me is the minimum I expect at the end. You have no other restrictions!”

With these words, Hugh M. Hefner strode over to the waiting stretch limousine – one of six black stretch limousines for “Hef” and his “special friends” – and sped off to LAX, where he and his entourage of old buddies, sidekicks, gofers, runners and lissome beauties would board Hefner’s DC- 950 “Big Bunny” jet for the flight home to Chicago.

It became famous during the 1970s because of Hefner's lavish parties. According to Bridget Marquardt on an episode of The Girls Next Door the Mansion is the only private residence in the city of Los Angeles with a permit for fireworks displays, and a zoo permit.

Although there may be others, a secret room known as the "Elvis Suite" is said to have been kept out of the public view, even for frequent and important visitors, for more than thirty years. In a March 2007 television interview, Hefner — who is an avid Elvis Presley admirer — explained the suite is special to him because of one night in the early seventies, when Elvis stayed in that suite along with no less than 8 girls. Hefner further confirmed that whenever movie stars, sports stars, or rappers come there to chill out, they always request the "Elvis Suite", but that it remains, and will most likely remain, off limits. He also added "Yeah, Elvis loved women, of all colors."

The house next door is a mirror image of the Mansion layout, only writ smaller. Hefner purchased the neighboring building in 1996 and it is currently home to his separated wife Kimberley Conrad and their children together. Hefner and Conrad married in 1989 and separated in 1998, although they have never divorced. Conrad said in an E! True Hollywood Story episode that she has no plans to get a divorce. According to the Wall Street Journal, Hefner and his wife announced in March 2009 that they are listing Mrs. Hefner's home for sale at $28 million.[2]

In 2002, Hefner purchased a house across the street from the Playboy Mansion specifically for use by Playmates.

The original Playboy Mansion

The original Playboy Mansion was a 70-room residence in Chicago at 1340 North State Parkway. It was built in 1899 for George Swift Isham and acquired by Hefner in 1959. For a period in the 1970s, Hefner divided his time between the Chicago mansion and the Mansion West, moving full time to the California mansion in 1974. The Chicago mansion boasted a brass plate on the door with the Latin inscription, Si Non Oscillas, Noli Tintinnare ("If you don't swing, don't ring").

Events and appearances

During the early 2000s, ESPN began broadcasting live boxing bouts from the large backyard. Vassiliy Jirov and David Haye are some of the notables to have fought there. Sugar Ray Leonard, in his capacity as boxing promoter, has held boxing cards there.

In addition to numerous Playboy features and pictorials, the Playboy Mansion has been the subject of a coffee table book (Inside the Playboy Mansion, 1998, ISBN 1-57544-044-X), a video game (Playboy: The Mansion), in which the player must build the Playboy "empire"), and inspired the U2 song "The Playboy Mansion" on their 1997 album Pop. The Nightwatchman's song "One Man Revolution", contains the lines: 'On the streets of Havana/I got hugged and kissed/At the Playboy Mansion/I wasn't on the list'.

The mansion has been featured in several music videos including "Playmate of the Year" by Zebrahead, "Work It" by Nelly featuring Justin Timberlake , Rockstar by Nickelback and "Beverly Hills" by Weezer. MTV aired a special in late 2000 where Limp Bizkit threw an album release party at the mansion to coincide with the release of their album Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water.

In the Eddie Murphy movie Beverly Hills Cop II his character crashes a party at the mansion.

In 2000, WWF superstar Eddie Guerrero appeared at the mansion in hopes to speak to Hugh Hefner about stopping the release of girlfriend Joanie "Chyna" Laurer's first photo shoot. A similar segment was shot in 2003, when WWE diva Nidia Guenard made an appearance at the Mansion during an episode of SmackDown, where she attempted to get past security in order to speak to Hefner. Nidia was jealous of Torrie Wilson who was getting a Playboy photoshoot.

The 2005 Playmates at Play at the Playboy Mansion swimsuit calendar was shot on the grounds of the Mansion in 2004. Playmates Hiromi Oshima, Lauren Michelle Hill, Carmella DeCesare, Sandra Hubby, Irina Voronina, Cara Wakelin, Karen McDougal, Christina Santiago, Pennelope Jimenez, Marketa Janska, Krista Kelly and Teri Marie Harrison appeared in the calendar.

From 2005-Present, life at the Mansion—specifically the world of Hef's girlfriends Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt, and Kendra Wilkinson—is featured on the E! reality television series The Girls Next Door. It has also appeared in episodes of several TV shows including Curb Your Enthusiasm (Hugh Hefner and a variety of playmates co-starred), Entourage (Hefner guest starred along with his Playmates), Sex and the City (the four main characters went to a party and were thrown out), The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (Hilary Banks goes to the Mansion to do a Weathergirl Photo Shoot) and an episode of Viva La Bam.

French DJ Bob Sinclar spun live at the Playboy Mansion in 2007, with a CD that followed. This CD consists of a mix of disco, funk and soul music.

In 2007, the Mansion appeared in an episode of the sixth season of The Apprentice as the site of a pool party held for the winning team.

This site served as the starting line for the twelfth season of the five time Emmy-award winning The Amazing Race.

In February 2007, boxing returned to the Mansion with Fox Best Damn Fight Night promoted by Goosen Tutor in association with Sycuan Ringside and George Chung Productions. Guests included Shia LaBeouf, Chuck Liddell and Brian Mc Knight.

On 3 September 2007, the first MMA Cage fight was promoted at the Mansion by Strike Force Scott Coker Promoter. The event drew stars that included Jaimie Lee Presely and Bobb Sapp.

On 31 May 2008, the Playboy Mansion had its first Wine and Food tasting event called Hollywood and Vino created by George Chung productions and Mediazone.com. The event featured wines from Hahn Estate, Brassfield Estates and special guests included Peggy Fleming, NFL Star Charles Woodson. Entertainment included Kevin Eubanks and special guest appearance by Arsenio Hall.

In 2008, Playboy Mansion saw the return of the Fight Night on ESPN 2 June 25th at the Mansion promoted by Sycuan Ringside and produced by Executive Producer and Mansion Promoter George Chung.

On 20 September 2008, the Mansion hosted the Strikeforce At The Mansion II event, streamed live on Sherdog. In addition to a full night of MMA action the guests will had an open bar, buffet-style, gourmet dinner; and wine-tasting party featuring the spirits of various California gold medal wineries.

Midsummer Night's Dream Party

The Midsummer Night's Dream Party, also known as the Midsummer's party, is a annual event held at the Playboy Mansion on the first Saturday in August [1].

In 2007, the party was thrown on August 4th. The theme was Arabian Nights. Some of the guests on hand were Christopher Knight and wife Adrianne Curry, Alfonso Ribeiro, Bambi Lashell and Devin Haman from E!'s "Sunset Tan" and many more.

This show was also taped by E! cable television channel and aired on The Girls Next Door episode "Unveilings." For the first time in the history of the mansion, the event will take place twice in one year (2007). The event will start off at the mansion then head to the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, NV, home to the world’s only Playboy Club two weeks later. Midsummer Nights Dream is promising to be the event of the year featuring a poolside masquerade/lingerie bacchanalia that is only comparable to what takes place inside the coveted gates of the Playboy mansion.

Financial

According to Playboy Enterprises' SEC filings, Hefner pays Playboy rent for "that portion of the Playboy Mansion used exclusively for him and his personal guests' residence as well as the per-unit value of non-business meals, beverages and other benefits received by him and his personal guests." This amount was $1.3 million in 2002, $1.4 million in 2003, and $1.3 million in 2004.

Playboy pays for the Mansion's operating expenses (including depreciation and taxes), which were $3.6 million in 2002, $2.3 million in 2003, and $3.0 million in 2004, net of rent received from Hefner.[3]

Charity events

The Playboy Mansion hosts many charity events, including the Celebrity Poker Tournament[4], a fundraising party for the Marijuana Policy Project[5], and an event to benefit research into autism [6].
