This is a list of items in the Mario video game series.

1-Up mushroom

The 1-Up mushroom, introduced in Super Mario Bros, gives the player an extra attempt to play after the character dies. They have appeared in most games since.

Boo

Boo buddies provide temporary invisibility in the Mario Kart series.

Caps

In Super Mario 64, Mario's cap could be replaced with one of three alternate ones.

Metal cap

The metal cap makes Mario invisible and lets him walk at the bottom of a water body.

Winged cap

The winged cap enables Mario to fly.

Invisible cap

The invisible cap enables Mario to turn invisible and pass through certain walls.

Chain chomp

In the Mario Kart series, the chain chomp could attach to the player's kart and carry them through the course at a faster speed. It also made an appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening as a pet.

Coins

Yellow

First appearing in Mario Bros., yellow coins had the purpose of acting as token needed to complete the level. In the main series up to Super Mario 64, collecting 100 of them gives an extra life.

Red

Red coins first appeared in Yoshi's Island: Super Mario World 2. Collecting eight of them in a Super Mario game usually produces a reward.

Blue

Blue coins first appeared in Super Mario 64. They are worth 5 yellow coins.

Feather

In Super Mario World the feather provides a cape which enables Mario to fly. In the Super Smash Bros. series, he can use it to deflect projectiles.

Fire flower

Fire flowers allow Mario and Luigi to throw fireballs.

Koopa shell

In the franchise, shells can often be detached from their Koopa Troopa inhabitants.

Green

In various games, green shells can be kicked in a way that hurts enemies. In Super Mario 64, they can be ridden like a skateboard.

Red

In Super Mario World, eating a red shell enables Yoshi to breathe fire. In the Smash Bros. and Mario Kart series, they chase players.

Yellow

In Super Mario World, eating a yellow shell enables Yoshi to stomp the ground with each step, harming nearby enemies.

Blue

In Super Mario World, eating a blue shell enables Yoshi to don wings and fly.

Flashing

In Super Mario World, flashing shells provide a Yoshi with all of the above abilities.

Spiked

In the Mario Kart series, spiked shells track down the leading racer.

Magic whistle

In Super Mario Bros. 3, the magic whistle enables the player to bypass certain worlds. It only appears three times in the game.

Poison mushroom

First appearing in The Lost Levels, poison mushrooms harm the player.

Power star

Up to Super Mario 64, power stars provided temporary invincibility. In Super Mario 64, they were collected as tokens.

Suits

In Super Mario Bros 3, different suits could be worn to gain powers.

Frog Suit

The frog suit gives Mario a frog appearance and increases the character's speed and agility under water. The Frog Suit allows the player to access underwater pipes.

Hammer Suit

The hammer suit gives Mario the appearance of the Hammer Bros. enemy and allows him to throw hammers at enemies.

Tanooki suit

The Tanooki suit gives Mario a raccoon appearance and allow him to fly for a short period of time. The Tanooki suit can also transform Mario into an invincible statue, minimizing the threat of damage.

Super mushroom

Super mushrooms cause Mario or Luigi to increase in size, giving them an extra hit point. It has been absent in Mario's 3d platforming adventures, but appears in the 2.5d New Super Mario Bros.

Super Leaf

In Super Mario Bros. 3, the leaf gave Mario and Luigi the ears and tail of a raccoon, enabling them to twirl their tails and fly.
