Lee Sunmi


Sun Mi or Seon Mi (Hangul: 선미; Hanja: 宣美) was born on May 2, 1992. She is a South Korean singer. And is currently in the Korean pop quintet, Wonder Girls.

Personal Life

Growing up in a rural area of Gyeong-ju, South Korea, her father passed away when she was very young. Despite given many chances to study in Seoul she often passed up offers. In her earlier teens she audition to join the JYP academy and was successful in doing so, thus moved to Seoul and to Chungdam High School for convinence. However, as of early 2009 it was revealed that in order to concentrate on their American debut, her and bandmate Ahn Sohee dropped out of high school as it was not possible to attend while in the United States.

She is known as 4D 'Alien' Sunmi to her fans because, she is the quirkiest and most weird member of her group. Sunmi loves extraordinary things such as protecting the Earth, she even said she wanted to become an astronaut. Sunmi is very close with Ahn Sohee, a fellow member of the Wonder Girls she has shown many affection to her but always seemingly, and playfully rejected by Sohee. Fans dubbed the couple as 'MiSo' combining both of their names together.

Career Life

After a year and a half of training at the JYP Academy, Sun Mi offically debuted in early 2007 as a member of the all girl group Wonder Girlswith the song Irony. Since then the group has won tremendous amount of awards and have had 3 consecutive hit songs.

On June 2008, during the promotion of So Hot, Sunmi suddenly fainted during an interview for difficulty of breathing, suffering from Hyperventilation Syndrome. This difficulty of breathing happened again while she and the rest of the members were preparing for their "1st Wonder" Concert.

The group are currently debuting in the US and have recently opened for the popular boy group, Jonas Brothersfor the N.American leg of their world tour.

Unlike other members of the Wonder Girls Sunmi is her full name, Mi is her first name but it would be too weird to just call her Mi, thus calling her Sunmi. In fan chants, fans call her Sunmi 'Jjang' which is translated to as 'best' or 'the best', since she doesn't have a 3 syllable name as other members.
