Template:Nihongo title is a side-scrolling platform video game being published and developed by Nintendo for the Wii video game console and is the sequel to New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS. The game was first announced at Nintendo's press conference at Electronic Entertainment Expo 2009, and is scheduled for release on November 15, 2009, in North America[5], and November 20, 2009 in Europe.[3] It will be the first game in the Mario main series since Mario Bros. to feature simultaneous multiplayer gameplay[6], and the first Wii title to feature Nintendo's new 'Super Guide' feature.[7]

Gameplay

The game uses elements of New Super Mario Bros. and also includes, for the first time in a Super Mario Bros. series game, simultaneous multiplayer capability of up to four players. It is played in classic style, with the Wii Remote held horizontally. Some movements such as jumping and attacks are performed with the buttons, whereas others like spinning in midair and picking up other players are performed by shaking the Wii Remote.[8]

According to the E3 2009 demo, players can play as four characters from the Mario series: Mario (player one), Luigi (player two), and two Toad characters: one blue (player three) and one yellow (player four).[9] Players are able to pick each other up and throw them. If a player dies, he can resume play if one of the other players hits a bubble with him in it.[5] Items come in multiple quantities, either from item blocks, or bubbles that float by on screen. New items have been added, including a Propeller Suit which allows players to fly and a Penguin Suit which allows players to freeze enemies.[8] The Ice Flower from Super Mario Galaxy also appears.[10] Players will also be able to ride on Yoshis, who display characteristics similar to the Yoshis found in Super Mario World and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.[11][12] While cooperatively played, the game also features competitive elements, such as trying to get the most points or coins, similar to The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords.[13] Rankings for each player are given at the end of each level, including stats such as enemies defeated, coins collected, and total points.[5] Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed during his roundtable interview in E3 2009 that the game will not feature online multiplayer.[14] The game will also be the first game on the Wii to feature "Super Guide", where players will be able to pause the game, let the game complete the level for them, and resume play at any time by unpausing.[15] This is only available in single player when a player has failed to complete a level eight times.[16]

Story

The game will follow the traditional storyline of Princess Peach getting kidnapped by Bowser.[17] The story is that it is Princess Peach's birthday and as Mario and his friends are celebrating, a huge cake reels in. Immediately Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings pop out and throw the giant cake on top of Peach, trapping her. From there, the villains load her onto their ship while Mario, Luigi, Blue Toad and Yellow Toad follow closely. The Toads from the castle soon use a cannon to blast away the Propeller and Penguin suit towards Mario and the others so they have access to them.[18] However, the cake idea was originally considered to be a joke.[19]

Development

New Super Mario Bros. Wii was announced at E3 2009. The game was created in response to Shigeru Miyamoto's desire to create the Mario series's single player gameplay for multiple players, as he was unable to bring these ideas to fruition in the previous installments.[14] The Wii's hardware allowed him to have all the enemies and items on one screen, and allowed a camera that could focus on all players at once.[20] The Koopalings (who originally appeared as Bowser's children in early Mario games) appear as major villains of this game.[21] Miyamoto has said Princess Peach will not be a playable character because of her dress, since it would require "special processing and programming to handle how her skirt is handled within the gameplay."[22]

Pre-Reception

The previews of New Super Mario Bros. Wii at E3 received positive responses. The game won Best Playable Platformer of Nintendo Power’s E3 Best of Show. Patrick Kolan of IGN wrote:

"Nintendo raised more than a few eyebrows when it announced a new New Super Mario Bros. specifically for Wii. Not only did it appear to buck the traditional single-player emphasis, it did so with an almost flippant disregard for graphics – and indeed any kind of enhanced presentation. But playing is believing – that's the old Nintendo mantra – and once again, it proves to be the case. Four player Mario side-scrolling fun is the call of the hour and once again we see exactly how Nintendo is better than almost every company at reading the whims and wants of the market. Another stunning Mario game."[23]

Miyamoto: With New Super Mario Bros. Wii as well, we’ve had some battles over the story elements. [...] Princess Peach likes cake, so you can just have them use cake as bait to kidnap Princess Peach, and that’s enough. I was thinking they could have these big ships come in, and they’ve got these big chains all over them, and they drop a plate down with cake on it (laughs).
Wired.com: That’s good. I would have saved that for the game instead of telling me.
