Lee Jun Ki (born April 17, 1982, in Busan, South Korea) is a South Korean actor, model and singer. He rose to fame as Gong-gil in The King and the Clown. He graduated from the Seoul Institute of the Arts with a major in Acting, and is a 1st degree in both Hapkido and Taekyon, and 3rd degree in Taekwondo. Besides Korean, Lee also speaks some Japanese, Chinese and English. As of 2007, Lee is one of the top screen stars in South Korea. Lee also became quite popular for his noble role as Ryung in the 2008 action, romance drama Iljimae. In August 2009, Lee Jun Ki was appointed an ambassador for Korea tourism by the Korea Tourism Organization. In Taipei on September 26, Lee Jun Ki's busy schedule took him westwards towards Bangkok, Thailand, where he attended the launch of his new photo book, Sawasdee Khrab released in September 2009.

Biography

In his adolescent years, Lee Jun Ki was a fairly normal individual who enjoyed sports and computers. He first became interested in the performing arts as a high school student after watching a play of "Hamlet". [1] Lee initially failed to get into college and because of this, he moved to Seoul with almost nothing in his pocket, but a dream to work in the entertainment industry. For the next couple of years, Lee worked at various part-time jobs, before gaining acceptance into the Seoul Institute of the Arts.[2]

Lee later started out as a model and held minor roles in Korean dramas. In 2001, he first appeared in the television commercial for the So Basic fashion label, appearing alongside actress Kim Hee Sun. His first drama appearance was as a dissatisfied teenager in the KBS drama Drama City: What should I do? He later appeared with a minor role in Star's Echo, a drama by MBC and Fuji TV in 2004. He would go on to appear in many more commercials and music videos. Lee continued to audition for various acting roles, but did not find immediate success. Lee would also make his acting debut on the big screen within the same year. Competing alongside 2000 other participants, Lee landed a role in the Japanese film The Hotel Venus. During his time working on the set of The Hotel Venus, Lee found himself less than pleased with his management company and having to work part-time jobs to support himself. The Hotel Venus would go on to become moderately successful in Japan selling 2.8 million tickets. Lee would later start work on his first Korean film Flying Boys. In 2005, his first major acting role came in The King and the Clown (왕의 남자), in which he took on the role of a feminine entertainer in the late 15th century forced to satisfy King Yeonsan's sexual and emotional cravings. The film became one of the highest grossing South Korean-made movies in South Korea, unexpectedly replacing Taegukgi as the most-watched film in Korean history with over 12.3 million viewers, despite the low amount Lee was paid of just over $100,000 for the role. The poor fee was largely due to the contract that was signed by Lee before he rose to stardom with the role of Gong-gil from The King and the Clown.[3][4] Lee was against the halving of screen quotas in South Korea that allows foreign films to be shown in theaters on certain days, while domestic films are alloted another amount of days. He believed that without the screen quotas, The King and the Clown [5] would not have been as successful in competing against foreign films.[6][7] He earned many Best Male New Comer awards for his role as Gong-gil in The King and the Clown in 2006. Later in 2008, Lee revealed how he got the role of Gong-gil in The King and the Clown. Lee Jun Ki said "The movie seemed really good so I challenged myself with the audition so even if I didn’t make it, I thought that I had to try my best to have no regrets in the end. I analyzed the story over and over until my script became like trash". Lee Jun Ik producer revealed the story of how he chose Lee Jun Ki for The King and the Clown by just handstands alone. In the movie, Gong-gil had to do a considerable amount handstands and he did very well. Lee's producer said "Just because of handstands, Lee Jun Ki became the person he is today."[8] After the film, Lee Jun Ki became "an icon" of the South Korean "pretty boy" aesthetic.[9] Lee Jun Ki has since tried to diminish his pretty boy image. Lee Jun Ki said "Gong-gil’s character in The King and the Clown felt like a foot chain for him so he wanted to escape from him as soon as possible. If one image is set for me, I was afraid that people would get sick of him quickly." Moreover Lee said "I’m not human Lee Jun Ki or actor Lee Jun Ki yet. There’s still a longer way to go in the future." Lee Jun Ki revealed that there are times where he feels gloomy and can’t find answers to his questions but he hopes to not give up his acting no matter what happens and die while acting, which showed his passion and love for acting.[8]

His next role was as the supporting character on the Korean drama SBS's My Girl together with Miss Korea, Park Si Yeon, Lee Da Hae, and Lee Dong Wook. His movie, Fly, Daddy, Fly garnered much attention and media coverage due to Lee's overwhelming popularity.[10]

Lee's popularity overseas is also noted, where in the 19th Tokyo International Film Festival, he was recognized as a top star.[11] In China, Lee was the only Korean among 300 Asian stars invited to attend a Chinese television show that celebrated the Chinese New Year[12]. During the Shanghai International Film Festival, Lee was approached by acclaimed Chinese director Chen Kaige, who proposed that the two should make a film together in China, to which Lee responded, "I'd love to make the movie if the script is good and the character is right."[13]

In 2007, Lee film a joint Korea-Japan movie entitled Virgin Snow with Japanese actress Aoi Miyazaki, in which he plays a Korean exchange student.[14] He was later able to hold his first meeting with his Japanese fans on March 10, 2007 in Osaka, Japan. The next day he spoke about his acting career during a talk show that was recorded at the Swiss Hotel in Osaka later.[15] Virgin Snow prove to be a success and placed 9th at the box office[16], setting a record for a Korean film released in Japan. He also starred in an action drama Time Between Dog And Wolf, his first drama ever as the lead role. Ratings took off at a relatively high 20% (approximately); however, they waned as the drama concluded. From September 4 to October 5, at the Seoul Drama Festival 2008’s 14th ceremony, Yahoo! Korea and Yahoo! Japan, together conducted a survey on who was the best between South Korea and Japan stars. The survey totaled 27 million online votes, and the most popular TV drama being Time Between Dog and Wolf with the total of 59.9 percent with overwhelming support from the fans. Coming in second place was KBS2 TV’s Hong Gil Dong with the total of 39 percent and coming in third place was MBC’s Coffee Prince with the total of 1.5 percent. The best male actor and female actress went to none other than the main characters Lee Jun Ki and Nam Sang Mi. [17]

At the 27th Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) announced that Lee would be that year's recipient of its Rising Star award. The award acknowledged the actor's work, media image, and growing star-power in the global arena. The festival, which ran through October 1828, presented the award at "An Evening with Lee Jun-ki" on Friday, October 19 along with a screening of the US premiere of one of his latest films. He also had a role in Korea's summer blockbuster May 18, about the events surrounding the Gwangju Massacre of 1980. The film will also screen at HIFF and has been nominated for the festival's top award, the Golden Orchid for Best Feature of 2007. The film covers one of the most tragic events in Korean history; the repressive regime of General Chun Doo-hwan resulted in a civilian uprising in the city of Gwangju, which was subsequently crushed by government troops entering the city and firing into crowds of demonstrators. The film has sold over seven million tickets at the local box office.[18]

From April to July 2008, Lee underwent filming for SBS's TV series Iljimae, a period drama in which he starred as a Robin Hood-esque character during the Chosun era.[19] Its first episode was started on the 21st of May with 15.4% program rating. From then its program rating was increased and finally Iljimae was finished on the 24th of July with 31.4% program rating, one of the highest ratings of the year. [20]

Lee Jun Ki became Korea’s most famous actor in 2007 and is now prominently known overseas as well. The 14th Seoul Drama Festival held an online popularity poll for a month and Lee received more than half of the votes and came in 1st place. The poll started the September 4 to October 5 and Lee received a total of 58.9% votes and became Korea’s most famous actor. Following Lee Jun Ki, was Kang Ji Hwan, who placed 2nd and Gong Yoo placed 3rd. Like online poll trends, new actors received more votes due to their popularity amongst young adults.[21]

On the other hand, Lee Jun Ki’s recent drama Iljimae is planning to be aired on the 25th of next month in Japan’s famous broadcasting program ‘Sky Perfect TV’ so his popularity in Korea is soon going to head on to Japan as well. Later in 2009, Lee Jun Ki will come back as a modern hero and has finalized his appearance in a television series broadcast by MBC drama Hero [22] in November. The script was written by Kwon Gi Young who wrote the script for Crazy About Love. [23] [24]

Dispute With Mentor Entertainment

In September 2008, Lee Jun Ki became embroiled in a contractual dispute with his agency Mentor Entertainment. [25] Since the dispute erupted, both sides have been relentless in making 'verbal assault' against one another. Mentor Entertainment was suing Lee Jun Ki for 1.5 billion Won for supposedly 'breaching his contract and showing no remorse for it'. Had Mentor Entertainment won the case, Lee could have potentially been out of work until 2013.[26] However, the dispute was later resolved and the suit dropped. Lee agreed to maintain his loyalty to the agency and has agreed to disclose the conflict between him and his agent by discussing about his signing last year. After Lee and Mentor Entertainment resolved their misunderstandings, all the misconducts made were canceled and they agreed to keep the relationship. [27] However, Mentor entertainment would not withdraw their suit against Lee’s previous manager, Mr. Kim, who was blamed for the misunderstanding. A spokesperson of Mentor Entertainment stated "Conflict between us and Lee Jun Ki have resolved completely, but suit for Mr.Kim’s seizure and swindle in his work still continues." In response to this Lee said, "I am sorry to hear fans’ concern, and hope everything goes fine and would like to thank the fans from the bottom of my heart for their great support." [28]

Korea’s Ambassador

On July 29, 2008, Lee Jun Ki had a conference for the Hallyu Festival, he was chosen as the Ambassador for the 2008 Seoul Hallyu Festival.[29] Lee was later entrusted as the laws tube in the 'Government Legislation Agency's 60th year anniversary' which was held at Seoul, Gwanghwamun Sejong Center Performing Arts. Lee also revealed that Iljimae had made “Human Lee Jun Ki a more diligent person.” Lee Jun Ki added, he was exhausted while shooting Iljimae, but he completed the drama well and felt the need to show something different. Although Iljimae had ended, Lee moved on to choose his next film and said, “When I’m choosing my work, I would like to choose one that involves working with other countries. Instead of showing off being a Hallyu Star, I will try my best to show good images for those who love Korea.” During the ceremony, Lee was appointed as the first honor law tube since the constitution of the Government Legislation Agency. He received this honor due to SBS's Iljimae. [30]

On August 5, 2009, Lee Jun Ki was appointed as the new promotional ambassador of the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO).[31] Korea Tourism Organization expressed their views by presenting Lee with an award given by the President of KTO. Through the promotional activities that Lee Jun Ki help to publicize, they wish to promote South Korea travel to more Asian countries fans so that the South Korea tourism industry can recover from the impact of H1N1 quickly. During the ceremony, Korea Tourism Organization had invited numerous Chinese media to participate. Lee's popularity across Asia has been proven by a number of concerts given in Korea and overseas. A concert held in Seoul last April in collaboration with the Shanghai branch of the KTO attracted 2,500 fans from Asia, including 180 from China. Two concerts in China in May, including one held in Suzhou, lured over 10,000 fans, and shows in Yokohama and Kobe last month drew over 9,000 Japanese fans.[32]

Fan Meetings and Concerts

On May 21, 2006, Lee Jun Ki spared some of his private time for a fan meeting, Episode I, with his unprecedented 12,000 loyal fans at the Jamsil Gymnasium in South Korea. The Episode I event featured singing, dancing, and even swordplay performances from the Korean star. There was also a popping dance segment with special guest Poppin Hyun Joon [33] and a Q&A session was held with his fans. [34] Since then, Lee has participated in many concerts with Anystar, Spris, the Hallyu Expo in Asia and Pepsi. He even promoted his concerts in other countries such as his Japan fan meeting (2007), Hangzhou fan meeting (2007), Official Thailand Fan Club (2007) and the Beijing Cyworld fan meeting (2007). Lee also made a brief appearance during the promotion of the Death Note, L: Change the World fan meeting [35]

Representing as a Hallyu star, Lee Jun Ki prepared a thankful gift to his fans called ‘JK Special Film’ and had planned a special meeting beginning with the fans of Japan. Lee’s special film was shown starting September 28, 2008 touring through Taiwan, Osaka, and Tokyo on October 6, then into South Korea on October 25 and was also shown during his stay in China, Hong Kong, and Thailand. The film was about an hour long and showed unrevealed or well-made scenes of his previous screen appearances in dramas, movies and etc. The film was said to be made by Lee himself directly after finishing his drama, Iljimae. [36] On April 18, 2009, Lee held his second fan meeting Episode II 'Mask' [37] [38] at the Olympic Park fencing arena. It was said that the Episode II fan meeting will be touring around Asia. The fan-meet marked the opening of Lee Jun Ki’s World Tour [39] which would improve from the first installment as it progresses with new songs, dances, and events. The audience was made up of 4000 major fans from Korea, Japan, China [40] [41] [42] and other parts of Southeast Asia. [43] The four songs that Lee performed were released into a single album J Style , and lead to the creation of Lee’s first official music video, titled the same, which was exclusively viewed by the attended fans. One of the songs, ‘Selfless Dedicated Trees’ was written by Lee himself as a “Thank You” message for his fans. [44] The World Tour continued on through to Shanghai following the Hangzhou fan-meet on May 29, [45] then onto Japan in June, where he showed an exclusive release of his second music video Soliloquy [46] [47] and continues into his Taiwan Concert Tour [48] at the Taipei International Convention Center in September 26. [49] The Taiwan Concert was planned to be the last show for Lee's Asia Concert tour. But an unexpected matter took place when they had discovered that their Taiwanese counterpart had run away with the money that was for the concert. [50] So despite this unfortunate setback, Lee Jun Ki and his agency managed to rent the venue and stage equipment at the very last minute to make sure that the concert went on as scheduled. [51]

Lee's photo book was produced to commemorate the 50th year anniversary of the Korea Thailand Communication Centers (KTCC). [52] The photo book cover illustrates Lee curiously posed carrying a backpack in his left hand while holding a camera in his right near the steps of a temple in Bangkok with the words JunKi Sawasdee Khrab, meaning "Hello!", (pronounced Sawatdi Keurap) [53] written above Lee's head. The content of the book consists of full color illustrations with 164 pages of stories in video footage based on Lee Jun Ki's complete tour in Thailand with other aspects of unseen footage, where Lee rides jet ski's, and role play's as chef in a market place.
