Welcome to my talk page.
House Rules
  1. I may or may not respond to a post you make here on this page.
  2. If I revert or remove your post from my page, it could be that I do not find the discussion germane to me, I will try to respond, but if I don't, you will survive, I'm sure. Alternately it could be that I find something in the posting to be preachy or pedantic, in which case I will simply revert or remove your post. I am busy living in Japan, and if I hit one button rather than another, on my own talk page, I am a 4-year editor, not some vandal, and really don't need to be roasted. I'm often very close to being in trouble, but jerks need to be called out. Whiny editors threaten with "I'll get your x taken away" or "you'll never make admin"... Take notes-I've been here four years, if I wanted that I would already be one. In the words of Jimbo Wales, I'm a good contributor, and so cutting me some slack is a very reasonable thing to do.
  3. This is not your talk page, this is my talk page, and I do not allow edit wars on here. If you are a legal positivist, if the "rules" of Wikipedia in your mind overrule respect for the privacy and pages of others, you have your own talkpage which is your own playground to do exactly what you wish. This is not it, and you are not welcome to it.
  4. Friends and colleagues are most welcome, and none of the above is meant for you..

Effective immediately, any visitor to this talk page may delete any "Image rationale" bot notification at will (specifically any and all messages from Betacommandbot and related bots), once they have dealt with the warning. I have no desire to archive them, so they may be deleted once addressed.

Image improvements

You tagged images such as File:Solomon Islands branch of The Scout Association.png for removal of the border. I am starting to think that you want the patch background removed on these. Sometimes I can do that, but most of the time it is beyond my abilities. If this is what you want, tag them as "Redraw to remove background". If they just need to be cropped for whitespace, then tag them as "Crop". ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 14:44, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Months ago, I converted many of these to PNG , uploaded as a new file and deleted the old file. Where I see that the original would be better to work with, I am going to restore the old and move it over the new so the original version can be retrieved. It is much easier now that we can just rename file. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 14:47, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am going to start working though Scout logos not using the logo fur template. I am going to convert the JPGs to PNG, so you do not need to tag them. It would help if you could go through some of the obviously cryptic names and tag them for rename. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 18:53, 2 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
File:Qatar.jpg was lost in a database crash a year ago. Any idea on a replacement? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 17:07, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It shouldn't be marked as such, I saw it up about a month ago. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 18:47, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Can you verify that File:Les Eclaireurs Unionistes de Côte d'Ivoire logo.png is the correct image? It has had two different uploads- the incorrect one should be deleted as the rationale does not apply to it. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 13:33, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The first one 10 minutes older was a mistake by the uploader, it belongs to the Association des Scouts Catholiques de Côte d'Ivoire, which already has an emblem here. Old one should be deleted. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 13:36, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK- current is good. File:Asociación Xuvenil Grupo Scout-Guía Vasco da Ponte.png and File:Asociación Guías de Madrid.png are orphaned— can these be used? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 13:43, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
They are both former members of Federación Española de Guidismo and are mentioned in passing in that article. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 13:55, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

These are redundant: File:The Scout Association of Malawi.png and File:Scout Association of Malawi.png. Which is the right color? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 16:12, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good catch. I forgot that happened. File:The Scout Association of Malawi.png is the right one, I couldn't get my computer to render the deeper red. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 16:15, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You have comments on File:Scouting in Somalia.png about stamps that do not seem to have any relation to tine image? Can these be removed? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 18:17, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Predated recent badge. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 18:20, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Can File:Scouts du Mali-self.png be deleted since File:Scouts du Mali.png was made from it? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 23:18, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Taking this one offline, check your e-mail. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 05:50, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:National Organization of Russian Scouts old.svg is in the infobox for National Organization of Russian Scouts (Scouts-in-Exile), implying that it is the current logo. Is File:National Organization of Russian Scouts.svg the old logo? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 18:59, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

old.svg is both more senior and the current badge for the exile group. The badge -R is for inside Russia but the same group. Jergen insisted on splitting them, though we don't do the same for Poland and Ukraine and Armenia, dunno why. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 19:09, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Persekutuan Pengakap Malaysia Frank Cooper Sands.jpg— is this a commemorative patch, stamp, award or what? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 00:23, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Umm, probably. ;) Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 12:48, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Found File:Qatar.jpg on a mirrored site; now at File:Scout and Guide Association of Qatar boy.png. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 19:51, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have orphaned File:Lietuvos Skautija.png and File:Lietuvos Skautija color.png, replacing them with File:Lietuvos Skautija.svg. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 23:59, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please ensure that I got the right colors for File:Mongolyn Skautyn Kholboo.svg. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 23:19, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect! Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 00:12, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I had to force a reload on those last two images to make the PNG version show properly. If you click on them, the SVG will show and you can refresh those readily, but sometimes the PNG takes a bit. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 01:04, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Do we need File:De Nederlandsche Padvinders emblem.png? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 14:39, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I would say no, I do not know why Egel replaced a larger one with a smaller grainy one. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 14:52, 21 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding your request, is the white circle part of the image? ZooFari 01:39, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How about this image, should the green be removed? ZooFari 21:42, 6 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Arabic script

Unfortunately, no I don't know of anyone off-hand who can give Arabic transliteration/translation and I don't know enough of the language to be of any assistance. If someone comes to mind, I'll let you know. Otherwise, you can always put {{Arabic}} on the talk. —Justin (koavf)TCM22:31, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Texas - China Comparison

The statement I made was a general one. The particular edit I made, Texas was identified as the largest state in the United States by area, with larger and bolder font to stand out. Texas, as you know is not the largest state. It is the second largest state and is quite smaller than the actual largest state - Alaska. Texans are fairly self -conscious and defiant about this fact because it is one of the things that makes Texas, Texas (being very large).

Their identity is wrapped up in being the best at X (whatever we define as X). It's not the largest state by population - that would be California. It isn't the fastest growing state, that was Nevada, Arizona, and so forth. It isn't the most business friendly state. The list goes one that Texas is actually second rate or worse in everything that makes it special.

The same goes for China. China is proud of being a very ancient culture - to the point that China fudges the numbers and rewrites history about how humans were actually originally from China and how they invented everything we know today. One account has the Chinese as the first discoverers of the New World, when we know that there is no proof for that assertion and that the Polynesians were the earliest known explorers to reach the New World (that was of course already inhabited by other humans).

Moreover, like Texas, China disputes it's size in comparison to other nations. China claims to be the third largest nation, which is disputable. The U.S. also has an argument for the third largest country in the world. The debate derives from what is included in a nation's area. If you include Taiwan and measure the U.S. in a certain way, then yes China is the third largest nation by area. However, China doesn't own Taiwan in any objective sense - it's claim being about as legitimate as the now defunct province of Outer Mongolia (Mongolia).

The claim for the U.S. as the third largest nation is based upon territories waters, both coastal and the Great Lakes, of which the United States has one of the largest coast lines in the world. China does not. The dispute could be marked as footnote, with neither having a solid claim, but China insists on teaching without a doubt that they are larger and by the transitive property the best - which itself is faulty logic sense that would make Canada and Russia even better.

Texas, like China, has a collective inferiority complex because although they have a lot to be proud of, it doesn't make them the best by any measure. In economics, California/India are larger or have more potential than Texas/China. In size, Alaska/Russia are larger than Texas/China. In nation/world standing, Texas was once independent, but with the help of the U.S. and asked to be annexed by the U.S. for protection. China, although it has existed for several years, has been ransacked for centuries and has only come back to prominence on the world stage in the last few decades.

This is what I meant by my Texas/China comment and it is a dynamic that many other states and nations don't take part of because it is childish. You don't have to be the best to be great. Texas and Chin don't collectivity understand that.

Homenmen Beirut

Would you consider Homenmen Beirut within our purview? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 13:14, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Homenmen is, the branch is more the soccer club. But all Armenian Scout associations are that way-because they were in diaspora so soon after Scouting's creation, they had to do all-inclusive Scout-and-sport-and-teach-your-kids-Armenian-all-at-once-away-from-home clubs. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 13:23, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So that is a no? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 13:49, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's a sucking-in-my-breath and tilting-my-head-to-the-side-just-barely. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 14:23, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I see you tagged the article, so I will tag the image. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 14:27, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Which image to keep: File:Badge of Homenmen Armenian Scouting.png or File:Homenmen Beirut.png? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 21:48, 7 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You marked these as redundant— which are we keeping? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 13:33, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Check your e-mail. It says I have put the request to merge the better parts of both in with a fast editor friend. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 13:35, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 14:07, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Don't know if you have ever checked Brands of the World, but they have a number of Scout logos. They are in EPS format and can readily be converted to SVG. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 06:10, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks-several of them actually came from us here. ;) Two I can use, thank you! Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 13:21, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Tuvalu Scout Association.png

Hi, I'm unclear on your cleanup tag ("redraw rope.") for the image, as it's a photo and the rope – assuming you mean the blue/green border around the badge – wasn't modified when the background was removed. — Bility (talk) 19:57, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You did a wonderful job, and thank you for finishing the batch! Tuvalu's problem wasn't something you did, the patch was made lopsided, hence the request. Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 02:10, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Essay"

Your reply in an edit summary said only the obvious: that this looked to you like an essay. I'm trying to find out specifically what things in mathematics-related articles cause the somehow to appear like essays to people not accustomed to reading that sort of thing. The definition of "essay" according to the documentation accompanying the template that you used says the essential thing is that essays are personal; they are what some around here call "POV". Where specifically in the article that you tagged do you find that? Your edit was cited in a discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Mathematics#Mathematics_.3D_personal_reflection.3F. (Here's the edit I was referring to.) Michael Hardy (talk) 00:48, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What do think of File:Bronze Wolf Award.png? ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 01:33, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's actually really good, but, because of detail, can you make this the full 300, and is there any way you can tweak the dangle so the wolf is walking straight instead of at an angle? If you can pull that off, that would be the ideal image! :) Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 01:44, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Other than what we already have, I can only find http://www5.airnet.ne.jp/bsy87/Y87/08_BRZ/Y87_2008_brz_01.html and http://www.pattayamail.com/674/features.shtml. The first is even smaller, the second is the source I used— after cropping it, it is the original size. I don't have the skill to straighten it without pushing it up into the ribbon. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 02:11, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like one for either the Graphics Lab or one of our graphic friends. Which appeals to you? Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 07:44, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's been straighted, but the wolf needs to be bright bronze, can you go back and snag it from the original photo at File:Bronze Wolf Award photo.jpg? Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 05:04, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

House Rules

Hi there, I am rather fond of your House Rules box. :) I wondered if you would mind if I stole it off you and personalised it for my own talk page? Thanks, -m-i-k-e-y-Talk / C 17:03, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you have reverted some unconstructive changes to this article. I recently took a sabbatical from Wikipedia and I missed this vandalism. I just wanted to thank you, as I have put a lot of effort into referencing material properly to ensure a truthful and verifiable NPOV. The fact that someone has decided to blank an entire section tells me we must be doing a good job at a point of view that is balanced, verifiable, and also reflects viewpoints other than the party line of the CPC. Thank you for helping. Dragonnas (talk) 11:52, 28 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
