Weird bit

"While incarcerated, he met a Christian woman, who was also known as Yūko Kurusu. She became his sister-in-law, after which he changed his name to Kiyotaka Fujiwara."

Maybe I'm just not reading this right, but I can't make sense of what this is saying. Why/how did she become his sister in law and why would that prompt him to change his name?
