Ashlyns School is a school for pupils aged 13–18 in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England. Unlike many other areas in the UK, schools in the Berkhamsted area operate a three-tier system of lower, middle and upper schools (with Ashlyns being the upper school), in contrast to the traditional Primary School and Secondary School system.

History

Ashlyns School was built in the 1930s by the Thomas Coram Foundation for Children, (the Foundling Hospital), a Charitable organisation set up in the 18th Century, as replacement for their premises in London. It passed to the local authority in 1951: for a time some children under the care of the foundation still lived in the school: once they moved out their dormitories on the first floor became class rooms. It has the "girls staircase" from the London Foundling Hospital.[1]

Recent

In recent years, the school has been awarded specialist school status as a Language College.[2] On the 19th of December 2008 Headteacher Mr Dalziel resigned after 10 years in charge; he was replaced by Mr Gary Lewis from January to April 2009 and then he was replaced by Mr James Shapland, formerly Deputy Headteacher of Nicholas Breakspear School in St Albans.[3]
