Your RFD nomination for Taiwanese nationalism

Just dropping you a note to inform you that I will not be deleting the Taiwanese nationalismTaiwanese independence redirect, and have instead redirected Taiwanese nationalism to Taiwan independence to remove the double redirect.

While your points regarding the difference between "nationalism" and "independence" are valid, terms do not need to be exactly synonymous for a redirect to be useful. The terms simply have to be similar enough that one could reasonably expect someone looking for one article to possibly type in the title of the redirect. I believe that's the case here, so I didn't delete the redirect.

However, please note that you may still (if you wish) turn the Taiwanese nationalism redirect into a full article about Taiwanese nationalism, in a way that distinguishes it from Taiwanese independence. By all means, feel free to do so. → Ξxtreme Unction {yakłblah} 11:54, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"ROC" vs. "Taiwan", transportation related articles

Hi Jiang, I'm a bit short on time and was wondering if you could help explain some issues to 163.28.64.50 regarding the use of "ROC" vs. "Taiwan". It's the same old problem that many new users encounter. Perhaps we should make a template that would point people to the naming conventions, explain that disambiguation pages are navigational tools, etc. Thanks for your help, if you don't mind. Re. the photo of Chiang on the balcony in Second Sino-Japanese War

Usually when I see that photo, it's in reference to the Lushan declaration, Chiang's de facto domestic declaration of KMT resistance against Japan. I actually don't know if that's correct or not, but I imagine that Chiang would find more motivation to give a major speech to his own people after Lugou Bridge. Your expertise in this matter would be most enlightening.  ;)

===>Preferences? Do you have any preferences between using the footer versus the side box? If it's a long article, the side one; short article the footer? Justin (koavf) 20:35, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mainland China

Would you think the term mainland China did include Kinmen and Matsu before 1945 (and did not include the Dachen/Tachen Islands until 1955)? The term may include the present-day Mongolia until recently. The border changes between the PRC with India, Pakistan, Sovient Union/Russia, etc., also complicates the matter, that time here is the fourth dimension. Should all these be better elaborated? Thanks. — Instantnood 08:15, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say the contemporary usage of the term has been stable since 1955. And as far as I know people in Hong Kong, and probably also in Macau, has been saying 中國大陸 for a long time. — Instantnood 09:57, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Han Chinese page

Say, wouldn't it be good to have at least one historical figure rather than just a bunch of contemporary Han? I mean at least an emperor or Confucius whom I think is a great choice. I'm cool with Jiang Zemin though as that's at least one political figure and Yao's okay too, but Elaine's Chinese American and I'd rather see Confucius representing the history rather than an expat. Just my two cents. Tombseye 01:28, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Flag of the Republic of China - Spoken Wikipedia

Hi Jiang

I noticed you shifted the Spoken Wikipedia box for Flag of the Republic of China to the bottom for the reason of reducing whitespace. I'm about to revert this for a couple of reasons:

1. Each combination of browser, resolution, font size and Wikipedia skin will produce different varieties of whitespace. While it may have looked unsightly on your machine and what you did made a difference, on my machine (1024x768, Firefox 1.5, "Normal" font size, Monobook skin), it's made no discernible difference whatsoever.
2. By shifting the Spoken Wikipedia box to the bottom, you've basically hidden it out of view from the majority of people who will come across the article. The guidelines at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Spoken_Wikipedia#Templates_for_articles say that the box should be at the top of the article, not at the bottom. This is so people are alerted to an alternate method of "consuming" the article.

Cheers, Darobsta 22:51, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah sorry... I thought you meant white space underneath the Spoken Wikipedia box, not between the first image box and the Spoken Wikipedia box.

As for putting the box at the bottom, there are some who do that, but I just went by what is policy on the project page. Now that I think about it, this is something I should look for/raise on the talk page there. Darobsta 01:05, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lü Bu -> Lu Bu

Can you explain why you moved Lü Bu to Lu Bu? I don't understand the reasoning, as the trend, it appears, on Wikipedia has been to add umlauts and accents when warranted on people's names. Lu Bu can be a redirect. --Nlu (talk) 19:07, 6 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

is taiwan=shame a comment that is acceptable on wikipedia? slander is not acceptable on here. you can have your own opinion on these issues but if you're tryin to brainwash people on this site then you go to the wrong place

My two cents:
It's not a violation of the NPOV policy because this is a talk page, not an article, nor did Jiang state that he was endorsing the message therein. If he was endorsing the message therein, it might, just might, be a violation of the no-personal-attack policy, but that is moot because no endorsement was stated. --Nlu (talk) 07:46, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay but Jiang does have a picture that is very anti-Dalai Lama. Does that make him subjective then? It is only his talk page. In anycase Jiang without a doubt seems to take a China POV over matters such as Taiwan and Tibet although is somewhat sensitive enough in cases to make it somewhat neutral without giving up his slanted point of view.

This makes me wonder though, as a newcomer to Wikipedia, could I put a picture of someone being slayed by Nazi's or some other image that will offend groups? How about pictures of Japanese soldiers during the Nanjing Massacre? Apparently anything is game as long as I don't personally endorse it. Personally I have a feeling I'd be shunned, but If I am not allowed then its obvious that there is some bias here.— Preceding unsigned comment added by ShrimpCrackers (talkcontribs)

by the way, accusing the assassination attempt on president chen is a way to win the election is unacceptable. remove the picture immediately — Preceding unsigned comment added by Freestyle.king (talkcontribs)

As I've noticed that Jiang has explained on your talk page, he doesn't endorse the message contained therein. There's no policy that I'm aware of that requires the removal of the picture. Please explain what policy you think he's violating. If you fail to do so but persist in demanding the image's removal, I may construe your future messages as violations of WP:NPA. --Nlu (talk) 07:59, 12 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

2006 Winter Olympics NOC order

on the IOC website, if you go to the NOCs pulldown menu, Chinese Taipei is listed after China, and not under Taipei. This was my original reason to move  Chinese Taipei to its prior location, and is my reason again. Where they marched in in the opening ceremony was due to the European concept of putting nouns before adjectives; in an English-speaking nation, Chinese Taipei always marches in directly after PRChina. Just a little clarification before the re-move; not trying to start an edit war, just going by what the IOC says.. -- Jjjsixsix (talk)/(contribs) @ 04:29, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, must have missed that. But anyhow, the IOC puts them in succession on their website, so do you think we should go by that? The past articles have put them together, except for the 2002 page, which inexplicably puts China under People's. I personally have no objections either way, but by precedent, by organization, and by alphabetical order,  Chinese Taipei follows  China, which I think is in just about everything except the parade of nations. -- Jjjsixsix (talk)/(contribs) @ 05:44, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, that link is to the IOC organzational website, (olympic.org). The most massive problem is that I can't find any site that uses Chinese Taipei; the news organizations tend to use Taiwan, and while I would prefer ROC, I completely understand why. Can't find any proof other than the listing of NOCs on the website, so I'd go with what wiki has done through the old Olympics, unless proof of the contrary can be found. That said, proof of the status quo would be nice as well. I want to sleep. I'll look tomorrow. -- Jjjsixsix (talk)/(contribs) @ 07:23, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

President of China

Hey Jiang. I'm wondering two things. First, on the political ranking of the CPC article, why does it say the Premier is higher than the Chairman of the NPC (because Wu Bangguo is higher in ranking than Wen Jiabao, although probably has less power). List of sovereign states

Jiang,

I have the following suggestion to deal with the list of sovereign states issue. We could try to eliminate the confusing subcategories in the list and put the following notice in the introduction:

To facilitate the searching of the list and to avoid any sensitive suggestion of supporting any political agenda, this list is only organized in alphabetical order without subcategories. However, it is important to note that this list consists of the following: <191 UN states, Vatican City, Republic of China, etc.>

Otherwise, I really think that those people trying to enforce the new version of the list are overdoing things. Allentchang 14:00, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of Sovereign states

Look, you didn't get objections about TAIWAN ONLY. Not the whole pile of the criminal-controlled territories of the world. Why do you equate Taiwan (ROC) to the territories without any control? If you have arguments to add Taiwan, add TAIWAN, not the separatist regions, ok? Pirveli 09:41, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Again... What you are doing is destroying the compromise reached on the discussion board of the List of sovereign states. Please, stop that. You may have arguments for adding Taiwan, but you have NO arguments for adding the separatist regions. Please, stop making changes that contradict the compromised version of the List. Pirveli 10:09, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You opposed the way Taiwan is listed, thats it. You have NO arguments for adding separatist regions to the List of Seovereign States. If you have them - write it on the talk page of the List. Preferabbly, read the previous discussion on the issue. Pirveli 10:15, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jiang, when you told Instantnood that no policy prohibited Wikipedia from using "Taiwan" to mean more than the island he retaliated by restoring that sentence prohibiting the usage to the guideline. He has gone on to say there isn't any consensus to change that. ==Can't argue forever, but somehow feel frustrated==

I don't understand why, but I feel extremeley frustrated by the discussion about the List of Sovereign States. Although part of the reason may have to do with ROC, the other part of the reason was that I took a course in political geography over at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where the professor gave pretty well defined definitions of "nation" and "state" with the Montevideo Convention in mind. He said that we have to be a little skeptical and cautious about official recognition as a basis to determine the existence of a state. Unfortunately, he avoided the question about the definition of a country because the relationship between country and state is not as truly clear cut as the relationship between country/state and nation. In Chinese, both state and country are aliased into the term "guo" and nation is associated with "min-zu" as in "tribe" or "ethnic group."

There's someone in the discussion board who basically say that footnotes and introductory explanations is BS and that such thing is for the List of countries. And then again there are calls to make the list into several catergories in different articles again.

Even my mother has noticed that I've been extremeley crossed and agitated for some reason these days. Can you recommend any 12-step program for me to avoid the Wikipedia for several months? Allentchang 00:23, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How would I legitimately move a barnstar posted on my talk page to my user introduction page? Or is it alright to copy the Barnstar contents in the talk page to the user introduction page? (I'm not that familiar with the Barnstar system . . . .) Allentchang 00:20, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nobel succession box

As the prize is awarded annually, there is clearly a succession, so the succession box is correct. It is directly relevant to know who won in previous and subsequent years. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 02:18, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You miss the point. There is one Nobel prize. It isn't a new prize created every year. It is awarded annually (though need not be if no one is thought worthy of it). It is standard Wikipedia practice in thousands of succession boxes to list the next person linked with something, whether a post, a position, an emolument, a title, an award to anything else where one person follows another. Providing those chains of links is standard WP policy and has been for years. It does not imply succession. That is simply the name of the box because it was originally used to list successions before its use was broadened out to list any chain of links. It is perfectly correct when listing the winner of the 1981 prize winner to link back to the 1980 winner and forward to the 1982 winner. That is and remains the acceptable way of doing it. I sorta had the format of the Agreement of Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance in mind, but I guess this one was pretty long. Regards, El_C 04:12, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

LEADERS OF ROC AND PRC

I cant make anything out of ROC or PRC leadership. Was Hu hammin supposed to be ROC/KMT leader from 1927-'31/'32 or what?! Was chiang leader from 1928-'75 or '31-'75? it hints at him rising to power in '28 but then it just goes to some weird quote.it implies he had supreme power yet choose not to exercise it. was the guy who was pres. from '88-2000 supreme ruler or was the party leader? How long was li acting leader? who was ROC leader from 1915-'18? Vital Component
