AWB citation removal

I'm not really sure why you removed the web citation with this edit? – Elisson • T • C • 09:20, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The web citation I removed was to a blog. Most blogs are not considered a reliable source per WP:BLOGS. Bgwhite (talk) 21:09, 14 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  1. You probably have no idea about what kind of blog blog.whoa.nu is, I guess? whoa.nu is Sweden's largest hip hip community (even has its own article on the Swedish Wikipedia), and blog.whoa.nu is the blog of the editorial staff of the site, the third most popular music blog in Sweden (and the 32nd most popular proffessional blog, all categories). You shouldn't really go around and just remove references like that without having a clue if they are reliable or not, and without knowing what kind of reference it really is. It says "blog" in the url, yes, but the review could equally well have been located under the main site url whoa.nu.
  2. And even if you do remove references because you have a really strong opinion on the matter, you shouldn't just remove them without telling why (in the edit summary or on the article talk page). I actually thought that it was some kind of mistake and if I hadn't been a curious Wikipedian, I'd just have reinserted the reference without ever writing to your talk page.
  3. And even if you do remove references and leave a message about why you did so, you should clean up the article after the removal. The article in question had three citations that after your edit pointed to a non-existant reference. Please be more careful with what you do when editing with AWB assistance.

Mispelings

I have in the past done a bunch of AWB edits, only to discover later that I had some kind of screwy edit summary. So you may not be aware that some of yours misspell "description" and "Persondata". Now, I realize that this may be an intentional display of individualization and quirkiness, in which case please follow the advice of Miss Emily Litella. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 01:50, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have that edit summary saved, so I enter it in each time I start AWB. I don't log out often, so I don't start up AWB often. I have one saved that is misspelled that I have to change every time. I'll get off my lazy but and fix it. I'm a notoriously bad speller and bad writer. Bad doesn't even describe it.
I've had my main email address for over 20 years now (Ahh, another I'm getting old reference). The OS I worked on didn't have spell check for email until around '97. I was legendary for how bad an email message could be misspelled. Office mates had a "shrine" on the wall with a copy of my worst misspelled messages. Peggy Nash

Hi Bgwhite, If Peggy Nash gets elected as the NDP's leader, which means she then becomes the Leader of her Queen's Loyal Opposition, does she then rate a "mid"-level importance rating? I ask, because I think this might actually be a gray area, because unless she served for a while, I would not rate her that high. Compared with the importance level of Robert Stanfield, who was leader of the opposition for approximately nine-years, I think she likely should remain at the low importance level until either a major issue of the magnitude of the 1970 War Measures Act comes along and grips the nation, or she has served for over a year at least. What do you think (about this hypothetical question since she has not won that title yet, and may not)?--Abebenjoe (talk) 03:30, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I can only speak for the WikiProject Biography banner, but I think my (emphasis on my) reasoning is in the same vain as the other banners. I look at all the politicians in the past and currently to figure their class rating. Leader of a country I usually give a low or mid. Member of a country's assembly or legislature I usually give a low. I'd think the same sort of reasoning would work for other banners.
Nash and Stanfield are completely two different stories. Standfield was Premier of Nova Scotia for 9 years, leader of the Progressive Conservative Party for 9 years and much more. Nash is just starting out in comparison. It comes down to what has a person done. I'm surprised Standfield's WP Canada banner rates him class=low, would think atleast mid. Bgwhite (talk) 06:40, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I think you have answered my question. I will take another look at Stanfield's article, because I thought he was a mid-level importance person, at least for being premier of a province for two full terms, but also for being Leader of the Opposition for so long and during a turbulent period in Canadian history. Oh well.--Abebenjoe (talk) 17:27, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the "tag" back to living. As incredible as it may sound, Isabel is still alive at 103. Tony the Marine (talk) 15:37, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. As I say... the day I don't make a mistake on Wikipedia is the day I don't edit. Bgwhite (talk) 21:25, 20 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

hi, now I've added some internal links and categories in the biography Momtazuddin Ahmed (dramatist). is it ok to remove the message from the top of the article (DEFAULTSORT per WP:NAMESORT using AWB (7852))), now? rgrds Zafor2010 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 08:41, 21 December 2011 (UTC).[reply]

Yes, the article does look much better. There is one minor issue of linking to the Bangla Wikipedia article. I'll fix that. Thank you for updating it. Bgwhite (talk) 09:03, 21 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Western name order"

You just changed Western to Eastern here. Zsuzsi is here given name. Bináris (talk) 06:18, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yea, I also moved the page so it would be listed as Mary Zsuzsi. It's going to need an administrator to fix that. Sorry, about this. I was thinking it was already in Eastern order. I've fixed others to western order in the past and I screwed up this time. I'll add the {{Eastern name order}} template on the page... I think alot of people will think this too and hopefully the template helps. I'll also fix the sort orders. Bgwhite (talk) 06:56, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Everything should have been done. Everything should read Zsuzsi Mary now. Bgwhite (talk) 08:48, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Zsuzsa=Susan, Zsuzsi=Susie. Mary is not a Hungarian name. :-) Bináris (talk) 09:46, 30 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Improper reverting of a disambiguation

You have reverted the following hatnote in the page Daniel Lazard:

Your summary for that edit was: Remove hatnote. Goes against MOS guidlines in this case. Which MOS guideline is against this hatnote? WP:HN does not mention such a case, where a people is ambiguously cited in an article title. In any case, such a disambiguation is strongly needed to avoid that a user who want to know more about the introducer of Lazard rings to read the wrong page. This confusion between the two mathematician called Lazard is very frequent. I have even encounter it several times by former students on one of them. What else do you propose for this disambiguation? D.Lazard (talk) 12:45, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

First off, you are editing your own page. I suggest you do no edit your page anymore. I don't think you have done anything wrong. In fact, I think you have done everything right by being up front about it and asking a question here when there is a "dispute". I have nothing but high praises for what you have done. It is just that it is best to stay away from the "appearance of evil".
Michel Lazard doesn't have an article. It appears he should have one. Could you write one up?
I'm objecting to the use of Lazard rings. in the hatnote... There isn't enough to mix things up. However, you are right, there does appear to be confusion about you and Michel. There should be something said about that at the top. Bgwhite (talk) 21:27, 2 January 2012 (UTC)l[reply]

A one year old Archdeacon!

At my age (51) the policeman really do start to look younger, but I'm afraid my error with Malcolm Leslie Lesiter was just incompetence. Looking at the date I could plead over indulgence the night before; but as usual Dad's Taxi was open for business http://www.halfmoonbay.co.uk/assets/product/340/340/1/MGTA2.jpg and I never had a drop! All the best for 2012- here's to error free editing
Bashereyre (talk) 20:52, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you didn't have a drop, what did you smoke? :). I also caught another Archdeacon of yours in which you called him Lesiter. You must have been smoking some good stuff. Atleast you had a good time. I was with my wife, therefore I was miserable... another loooong year with her. Bgwhite (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ha, ha. My last smoke was on Remembrance Sunday 2006. But do you know, if I could be sure the world really was going to end on 21 December 2012 I would be back on my two packs of Marlboro Reds a day quicker than the wife could say “They’re really not very good for you, darling”.

It seems iffy to me too. It would of been better if there was a better source to find more about that person. A real name would make it easier to find. Jae ₩on (Deposit) 15:16, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

ZDoggMD

Hi, you removed several references in the "History" section, leaving a note that the article did not mention what was written, however this is not true. The History section comes entirely from the online interview at TechCrunch, as was referenced. Please can you restore them. Also you messed up some of the ref tags in the intro paragraph.Richard ruffian (talk) 03:40, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

First off, new talk sections go at the bottom of most people's talk pages.
I removed the techcrunch reference because none of the things that were being referenced in the WikiPedia article by techcruch were to be found in the techcrunch article. If you are referring to the techcrunch interview, interviews are deemed unreliable for most things. For example, the interview saying he got his start because of his best friend, the CEO of Zappos, cannot be used as this is a claim about third party. This has to be documented by a reliable source. Please see WP:SOURCES.
I'm not sure what you mean by "you messed up some of the ref tags in the intro paragraph". I never changed formatting of any reference as they were and still are messed up. I only removed unreliable references. Bgwhite (talk) 06:23, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well WP:SOURCES backs up the use of my interview completely: "Base articles on reliable, third-party, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. Source material must have been published (made available to the public in some form);" [TechCruch is all of these things and the interview is published]
"Electronic media may also be used, subject to the same criteria."

(TechCruch interview is "Electronic media") - WP:Sources says nothing about not using interviews.

Also you removed a reference to med blogs, one of the most respected online medical communities where authors are by invitation only, this counts (also from WP:Sources) as a reliable source: "Several newspapers host columns they call blogs. These are acceptable as sources if the writers are professionals and the blog is subject to the newspaper's full editorial control."
Please revert.
Richard ruffian (talk) 16:15, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not all electronic media are the same. A newspaper article on the web and a blog are both "electronic media", but are different creatures.
A straight up interview by a subject talking about themselves is self-published regardless of the medium. For example, 60 Minutes does an interview with a subject at the beginning. 60 Minutes follows up the interview showing all the lies. Is the interview a reliable source? No. You cannot use a self published source that involves claims about a third party. The interview was used to reference that CEO of Zappos is a best friend and prodded him to do the videos. This is claims about a third party.
The med blog says it got information from another source. I also removed the med blog because it was only being used as a reference for his name. You do not need a reference to verify somebody's name unless the name maybe of doubt. A movie star who legal changed their name, but says they never did comes to mind. Thanks for your comments. I have removed the contents of the usepage and I will work on adding citations in the work section.

I believe that the congressional testimony is notable as it relates directly to controversial political issues including the Solyndra loan controversy and an ongoing, high level US Federal investigation that has become an issue for candidates in the 2012 United States Presidental Election.

Great find!

That is really useful. I immediately looked for DRC, and then Sudan, and did not find either. But no problem. Kenya gives Bantu and Nilotic rules and Algeria gives Arabic rules. So this is a breakthrough. Too bad it is not in more accessible format, but still, it is way better than nothing. It should be referenced in the WP guideline on name sequence. I can see no reason why WP would adopt any other standard. Maybe WP could give a simplified version for each language group... Aymatth2 (talk) 14:50, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I would say the subject deserves a WP:something guideline page of its own, and am sure you would get no objections from anyone and a lot of support if you just went ahead and created one. Maybe sort of announce your intention on Wikipedia talk:Categorization of people. My guess is that a) the rules are mostly language-specific, not country-specific, and b) there is a relatively small number of rule sets, with a given rule set applying to several languages. No need to repeat it for each language or country, but maybe a cross-reference would be useful.

For example, for Bantu-group languages (many languages, several countries), the general rule is something like:

  • European first names are not included in the sort
  • If the name contains a hyphenated pair "wa-xxx" that starts with "wa-", the main sort key is WA-XXX, followed by any words after wa-xxx, followed by the words before wa-xxx
  • If the name contains an unhyphenated "wa", the main sort key is XXX, where xxx is the word that follows "wa", followed by any words after xxx, followed by the words before wa
  • Otherwise, the main sort key is the last word, followed by the other words in the sequence given.

It would take a fair amount of work to spell out all the rules, but would be extremely useful. I don't know what the protocols are for this sort of thing, an admin should advise, but wonder if it would be worth approaching IFLA and asking them whether they would waive copyright? The Page G.K. Sanghar has been re-edited substantially following your Advice to Prevent Deletion

Hi Bgwhite,

Firstly, thank you for your considerate feedback. Yes, there was quite a bit to work on and I have made the changes and there are a couple of things I need to clarify too.

After reading your comments and going through the article, I realized how commercial and biased the article had seemed. As a result, I have tried remove whatever advertising or promotional language use.

Secondly, thanks for the re-direct for the matter of the fact that she is at times referred to as GK or Gurpreet Kaur, which make up the initials G.K. Having regarded that, the article on the India Se website cites her name as Gurpreet Sanghar. Please do bear in mind that her articles are featured in publications that are not showcased online as per normal unlike the scanned versions found on fan websites, which are totally inappropriate. Given how exclusive India Se is, readers have to subscribe to the magazine in order to read the full story. That is why, you can only see the the few paragraphs of the story on the website. Most of the time books and films are easily attributed as compared to articles. However, I do have her original articles in pdf. format for verification but I suppose I cannot upload them? Also all of her TV shows are accredited and credible, including 'Pure Allure' and can be found on her website directly under the heading 'Media Gallery.' But how do I reference the individual TV show clips online for verification?

Next, for the music album, 'Illamai Jolly Jolly', I have added more information about the production and the cause of the album, which is essential. This time, I have referenced that bit with the same article once removed as it is now very relevant to the production of the album. GK had hosted the press launch too, which is available on her website, so these are verified pieces of work. However, her shows are only shown on television or cable, and are not available online, except for the 'My First Million' trailer, which is accessible online. Zee TV and MediaCorp are reputable channels and their works are bound to exclusivity and copyright. You will realize this when you Google up Singaporean TV personalities online and their shows are hard to find online....in Singapore, please bear that we only have one media broadcast centre, MediaCorp unlike other countries which have several stations, hence the limited viewing.

I have removed the IWG Fashion Calendar that GK was a part of as there are no pictures available online, except for a fan-created facebook page. The reason being that the calender is currently being sold for 2012. Please do regard that the calendar was launched by India Se's editor and GK was featured in magazine that she wrote for. Then again, I excluded that portion as it may lead to partiality when that it not the case. India Se is proud NRI magazine that caters to reporting on the significant issues concerning South Asian Diasporas around the world and GK was essentially featured.

As far as the 'Living Persons' portion is concerned, how do I authenticate her existence when all credible information is on her website. Her website is not simply a resume portfolio but contains her repertoire of work so far and helps maintain a connection with her fans.

Please do not delete G.K. Sanghar's page as it bears a lot of relevance. GK Sanghar is only one of the few Punjabi TV personalities in Singapore, to have excelled in the media industry and serves as an inspiration to the youth. Just because her work is solely up on her website does not mean that her work is not legitimate and authentic given that station logos and show titles are made obvious. She has only been around 2 years and has covered appropriate publishing to broadcasting at a young age, and she is a familiar face.

Also, I have made amendments to the External Links with better referencing and removed all dead links.

Hope this clears it all up and do propose some advice.

Thanks, Preet 18:27, 12 January 2012 (UTC)Preet Sanghar — Preceding unsigned comment added by Preet Sanghar (talkcontribs)

Thank you sir

Dear Sir, It was my first effort to creat article for Wikipedia. I am glad to recieve your comments for the improvements. Sir. I made this article 'Vineet Soni' as he is voluntarily working to conserve the threatened plant species and running 'Save Gugul Movement'. His work got wide appriciation because he is working at grassroot level for conservation. Soni serves as an inspiration to the youth because evenafter completing the doctorate and post doctorate, he is working at the surface level to protect the plant species. UNESCO france published a special interview in different language in A World of Scinece. I did my best to remove the unreferenced contents from the article. I kindly request you to edit the article and prevent it from the deletion. If you still think that its not good, then remove it sir. With warm regards
