MSU Interview

Dear Earle Martin,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 05:51, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Earle Martin, you didn't follow the procedure for good article reassessment. Please read the instructions at WP:GAR - you can't open a new GA review, that would not notify anyone. You need to open a GAR subpage as describes at WP:GAR, give users time to respond and be specific about where the article fails the good article criteria. Regards Hekerui (talk) 08:54, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect you've used a templated message here. I did follow the procedure and just needed to notify involved editors, which has now happened. -- Earle[t/c] 15:36, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Oldschool

A lot more of us old timers are around than people might think -- I stumbled across two who predate me the other month -- but we are a dying breed. Unless my mood changes soon, you may outlast me here. -- llywrch (talk) 22:32, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

One is Rmhermen, who kept beneath my radar for a long time. Another was Theresa Knott, whom I knew was a long-time contributor but until Rmhermen posted on my talk page & I went looking at Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians in order of arrival, I didn't know she's been contributing since August 2001. Both must be in the top 5 of longest tenures who are still active. (Others I knew about include Eclecticology & Evan Prodromou, whom I've met face-to-face, & Slrubenstein & LA2.) -- llywrch (talk) 01:02, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oooooldness

Thank you very much for the note, which I greatly enjoyed. British: yes, guilty; around a long time (in Wikipedia/internet terms): yup, that too.

I remember quite clearly the day that I "discovered" it: I was looking for information on some plant, flower or something. (Sadly, exactly which bit of flora was stored in some memory which now seems to have been rewritten or disconnected.) It was in the Guardian crossword, in fact: I had the word in, but wanted to check what on earth it was. And suddenly I was looking at something that said (a) it was an encyclopaedia but (b) I could change it! Strange days. And the rest, of course, is history.

I don't do that much here nowadays. At one time, under my previous username, I was really quite active, enthusiastic, and committed. Now I just do bits and pieces, and bitch at people who can't spell "Middlesbrough", and do various other sad OCD-ish things. (See username ... ah yes, you did.)

Excellent to hear from you, take care, all good wishes

What about this one? --George Ho (talk) 00:40, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yes! I'd completely forgotten that I made that. I've re-tagged it now. Thanks. -- Earle [t/c] 07:44, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Over-referencing

Wrt your (age-old) comment here, I tried a different formatting but was overturned and I don't have the time or energy to improve Wikipedia against active resistance. Maybe you wanna weigh in. --87.78.237.165 (talk) 19:10, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
