Maattrraan (மாற்றான்) is a 2012 Tamil action thriller film directed and co-written by K. V. Anand and scripted by Subha[5].It is being produced by Kalpathi S. Aghoram under the banner of AGS Entertainment. The movie stars Suriya, portraying conjoined twins,[6] along with Kajal Aggarwal in lead roles while Sachin Khedekar and Tara play supporting roles. Maattrraan was released worldwide on 12 October 2012 along with a dubbed Telugu version titled Brothers.[7]

Plot

Suriya plays the conjoined twins – Vimalan and Akhilan. Their father Genetic scientist (Sachin Khedekar) does not get due credit for his research works in India but he never loses his heart. With his sustained efforts, he becomes successful in life by becoming a proud owner of an energy drink product. As the company grows, there is a lot of competition and his rivals have set their eyes on the formula of the drink, which could make an ordinary man extraordinary.

Meantime, Akhil and Vimal meet Anjali (Kajal Aggarwal) and falls in love for her. The conjoined twins are different in their personalities. Vimalan is decent and good at studies by nature, but Akhilan is a carefree man and poor in his studies. Both have no interest in their father’s business.

Akhilan comes to know that his father is fowl playing in his business and mixes a dangerous substance to the product to boom its business. In this venture, he is killed. Anjali who was in love with Akhilan, falls for Vimalan and they are set to solve the mystery.

Cast

Casting

During the post-production stage of Ko, K. V. Anand announced that he would direct Suriya again after the success of Ayan, further noting that it would be produced by AGS Entertainment and would begin once Suriya finished shooting for A. R. Murugadoss' sci-fi thriller 7aum Arivu. Several actresses were considered including Taapsee Pannu, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Sharma,[8] with Kajal Aggarwal eventually grabbing the role.[9] National Award winning Kannada actress Tara was signed on to play Suriya's mother.[10] Prakash Raj was dropped out of the film and he was replaced by Sachin Khedekar who played Amala Paul's father in Deiva Thirumagal.[11] Daniel Balaji was said to be a part of the cast but he denied that he was apart of the crew.[12] Hindi actor Milind Soman was also wrongly reported to be working for the film.[13]

Filming

It was officially launched on 22 July 2011 in Chennai.[14][15] The first schedule was held near the Pakistan border. In November 2011, the crew filmed a song in Latvia.[16] A major portion of the film was shot in the Balkan region in countries like Croatia, Serbia, Albania, Macedonia and especially a large chunk in Russia.[17][18] Another large portion was filmed in sets erected at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad.[19] In February 2012, the team left for the United States to do special facial scanning led by VFX Supervisor V. Srinivas Mohan. Maattrraan thus became the first Indian film to use performance capture technology.[20] Isha Sharvani performed an item number for a song titled "Theeyae Theeyae" which was shot at AVM Studios.[21] Furthermore, a duet song featuring Kajal and Suriya was shot at Wai, a village near Pune in Maharashtra.[22] Moreover, many CG scenes were shot at Balu Mahendra studios.[23] A song featuring over 500 junior artists and Suriya was shot in Jodhpur, touted to be the last phase of canning songs.[24] Next, filming for an important talkie portion was held at Bhuj in Gujarat near the safe zone along the Indo-Pakistani border that lasted for five days. Anand and cinematographer Sounder Rajan subsequently were in Madagascar, hunting for a forest location to shoot a song for the film. However, since Suriya could not afford filming there due to his other commitments, Anand decided to erect a similar set in India to create the same look as in Madagascar.[25] The shooting which was to be held in the US, was cancelled in June 2012.[26] The entire filming was wrapped up in Norway by completing the "Naani Koni" song.

Soundtrack

Harris Jayaraj composed the music; the soundtrack features five tracks that belong to varied genres.[27] As per K. V. Anand's idea, he and Jayaraj sailed on a ship in the Mediterranean Sea where most of the songs were roughly composed.[28]

The audio rights of the film were acquired by Sony Music for 2.25 crores.[29] The album was launched in a grand manner on August 9, 2012 at Singapore Expo in Singapore.[30]The event was attended by several noted personalities from the film industry along with the technical crew and cast of the film. A live performance was given by Harris Jayaraj and singers Karthik, MK Balaji, Vijay Prakash Krish and Charulatha Mani. The event's satellite rights was bagged by Jaya TV for an undisclosed price.[31]The soundtrack received dull response from critics.[32] [33]

Critical Reception

Maattrraan received Positive reviews from critics.Indiandragon of indiandragon.in gave 3 1/2 dragons and said "K.V Anand did not fail in delivering what was anticipated from him in Maattrran, but he did not meet the fullness demanded from such powerful script,So it is Double the fun, Double the dampen".[41]MovieCrow Verdict : Maattrraan is truly international standard film. It is a Must Watch for Suriya, Story Concept and Visual Effects portraying Conjoined twins in such realistic manner.FDFS Review Rating - 4 out of 5 Must watch.[42]BehindWoods gave the movie 3 stars out of 5, concluding it a rich and grandeur entertainer but the movie is a tad lengthy and could have been reduced.[43] One India rates it 3 out of 5 and called it 7aum arivu's 2nd part in which the audience will start realizing that the film has similar subject to 7aum arivu and concluded it overall an average movie since the 2nd half is a let down and it is predictable and also the songs are good and not the best.[44] Indiaglitz rates it 3.5 out of 5 for the unique attempt and worth a watch for the first half but there were few logical flaws here and there appear more prominent than one would like and the 2nd half looks shabby and wrapping things up at the end was not quite good.[45]
