Samsung Galaxy Gear is a smartwatch that was announced on September 4, 2013 by Samsung at Samsung Unpacked Episode 2 in Berlin.[1] It will only work with the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition, after updating to Android 4.3, the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S III, and Galaxy Note II will work with the Gear.[citation needed] A Samsung spokesperson has stated that the smartwatch will be compatible with a range of devices in the future.[2] The Gear will be available September 25 in over 140 countries and early October in the United States for $299.

History

Pranav Mistry, the head of Samsung's Think Tank Team and Director of Research is the person behind making the Samsung Galaxy Gear a reality. [3][4][5]

Lee Young-hee, Samsung’s vice president of mobile, revealed that the development process for a smartwatch was "so long" in early July 2013.[6] The Bloomberg website states that "two people familiar with the matter" claimed that Samsung will introduce a wristwatch-like device named the "Galaxy Gear" on September 4, 2013, two days before the Berlin IFA consumer electronics show. The device can make phone calls, access the Internet, and handle emails.[1]

In an interview with the Korea Times publication on 27 August 2013, Lee Young-hee confirmed that the Galaxy Gear will be announced September 4, prior to the IFA Consumer Electronics fair. The executive vice-president further explained:

The Gear won’t have a flexible display. The new device will enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many ways. It will lead a new trend in smart mobile communications. We are confident that the Gear will add meaningful momentum to the mobile industry.[7]

Hardware

Technical specifications

  • 1.63 inch 320×320 display 277 PPI (1.67-inch Super AMOLED ≙ 191 dpi; 3 cm×3 cm)[8]
  • Single-Core 800MHz Exynos processor
  • ARM Mali-400 MP4 Graphic-Processor (210 MHz/500 MHz)[8]
  • 512 MB RAM[8]
  • 4 GB on board storage
  • 1.9-megapixel camera located in the watch band[8][9]
  • Bluetooth 4.0 [10] / NFC/Wi-Fi[8]
  • 3 axis accelerometer[11]
  • 315 mAh battery (advertised to last 25 hours)
  • Accelerometer & Gyroscope (+Gesture Control)

Durability

The Galaxy Gear is rated according to Ingress Protection Rating to be IP-55. [12][13] Its solid particle protection is rated at level 5, which protects against moderate amount of dust entry into the device, and protects against general contact with physical objects with internal components. Its liquid protection is also rated at level 5, which protects against moderate jets of water, but does not protect against submersion in liquid with pressure significantly above 1 atm. This means that it will protect against general incidental contacts with water, such as washing hands, but will not protect against complete immersion in water at any depth below the surface. It is inferior, in terms of liquid protection, to the Sony Smartwatch 2 [14]'s rating of IP-57, which survives prolonged submersion to the depth of 1 meter. So the Galaxy gear protects against most forms of liquid damage, but cannot be used in aquatic sports such as swimming.

Colors

The watch will be available in Jet Black, Mocha Gray, Wild Orange, Oatmeal Beige, Rose Gold, and Lime Green.[15]
