Plot

The story begins in the IIM Ahmedabad mess, where Krish, a Punjabi boy from Delhi sights a beautiful girl, Ananya, a Tamilian from Chennai, quarreling with the mess staff about the food. Ananya was tagged as the "Best girl of the fresher batch". They become friends within a few days and decide to study together every night. In the mean time, they become romantically involved. They both get jobs, and have serious plans for their wedding. At first Krish tries to convince his girlfriend Ananya's parents and at last convinces them by helping Ananya's father to do his first PowerPoint Presentation, her brother, Manju, by giving him tuition and later convinces her mom by asking her to sing in a concert organised by Krish's office, i.e Yesbank lol. She is convinced as her biggest dream of singing at a big concert comes true. She sings along with S. P. Balasubrahmaniam and Hariharan. Then they try to convince Krish's mom. But the problem is Krish's mother's relatives who don't quite like this. They say that Krish should not marry a Madrasi bhandu but end up agreeing with them when Ananya tries to help one of Krish's cousin to get married and succeeds to do so. Now as they have convinced both their parents they now try to make their parents meet each other to know each other. They go to Goa. But this dream of theirs end as Ananya's parents finds something fishy between Krish's mom and him. Ananya's family end up deciding that Krish and Ananya will not marry each other. But, at last, Krish's father, who was like an enemy for Krish, helps Krish and Ananya to get married as he convinces Ananya's family well. They really do very hard to convince each other's parents and finally make it. It is narrated in a first person point of view in a humorous tone, often taking digs at both Tamil and Punjabi cultures . The movie ends with Ananya giving birth to twin boys. They say that the babies belong to a state called 'India'; with a thought to end inequality.

Critical reception

The film received positive to mixed reviews from critics.

Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama awarded the movie 4.5 out of 5 stars, and noted,"On the whole, 2 STATES is one of the finest movies to come out of the Hindi film industry of late. This is one of those rare Hindi movies that commands a repeat viewing. Strongly recommended!"[14] Subhash K. Jha of IANS gave 2 States four out of five stars and said, "2 States is a magical north-south love story you wish wouldn't end. It creates a world where characters don’t shout to be heard. They just belong to a world where being proper, politically or otherwise, is not always a pre-condition."[15] The Times Of India wrote,"What makes 2 States work is the simple narrative told humorously. Adapted as it is, from one of author Chetan Bhagat's best-selling works, the film, just like the book before it, is light-hearted. Chetan's funny one-liners and life-view are studiously borrowed by the director for his screen outing. And though there is a sense of deja-vu, for those who have read the book, the movie still manages to charm and surprise."[16] Critic Saurabh Dwiwedi, writing for India Today published,"2 States can be a good mirror for parents to understand their children. So take along your parents and enjoy the film."[17] Paloma Sharma of Rediff gave the movie 3.5/5 stars and opined,"There's nothing that should keep you from watching 2 States.[18] Hindustan Times' Anupama Chopra gave the film 2.5 stars out of 4, and said, "In 2 States, the story is the weakest link. The film is bolstered by talented actors, gorgeous songs by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, nice styling, sumptuous production design and a few sparkling moments. But in the second half, 2 States falls apart. At almost two-and-a-half hours, it’s also stretched so thin that by the time Krish and Ananya walk into the sunset, you are long past caring." Concerning Kapoor and Bhatt, she said, "Arjun, departing from his earlier violent roles, makes a nicely goofy and later subdued lover boy, but it’s Alia who lights up the screen."[19] Indian Express gave film 2.5 out of 5 stars. [20]

Box office

According to Box Office India, the film had an "excellent" first day figures of 115 million (US$1.4 million).[21] It collected 12.42 Crores net in India on its opening day.[22]
