== Image:398px-Killala.jpg listed for deletion ==

An image or media file that you uploaded, Image:398px-Killala.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please look there to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. (Unsigned comment by User:Nv8200p)
Yes, it appears it was an error on my part. I will delete it, then.--File Éireann 21:03, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image Tagging Image:Lucia4.jpg

Warning sign
This image may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Lucia4.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Ricky81682 (talk) 08:40, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for above. I have deleted the image, as I have no copyright info from it, and note that it has already been deleted on Portuguese wikipedia, where I found it.--File Éireann 14:56, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An Esperanzial note

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Protect of Ethiopid- thanks

Hey Brendan, thanks for protecting that article for the moment. I actually agree with the sentiment, if not the action, of the anon who 'vandalised' it: namely, the article has been created by User:Learning1 as a vehicle to promote some misguided racial perceptions on Ethiopians. They are doing this quite clumsily tho', putting together a mish-mash of barely-relevant studies without attribution and a whole bunch of stolen pics to bolster whatever theory they have. The term 'Ethiopid' barely registers in searches; unless anything credible turns up I'd maintain the whole thing could be deleted.--cjllw | TALK 23:39, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

To be clear

I don't want to accuse you of bad faith or anything, but please review your decision to protect an article linked from the front page in a version that lacks both the image and a link to the image. Hipocrite - «Talk» 22:34, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you remove the image when protecting the page? —Ruud 22:36, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I've put the image in the body of the article as a temporary compromise until consensus emerges re position.--File Éireann 22:37, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Well it should probably go at the top, but that can be done after feeling cool down a bit. Cheers, —Ruud 22:41, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am surprised that you protected the article after the image had been removed. The clear majority at the time wanted ther pictures up. Slamdac

No, you did the right thing - you put the image back. I fail the WP:AGF, and you were right. I'm resetting my modelwikipedian timer to today. Hipocrite - «Talk» 23:13, 2 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Block without warning

I was just about to warn the last vandal on Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy when I discovered you had blocked him. I'm not too worried about it, but I'd like to suggest that's a little premature, without at least one hand-written warning about why it's vandalism. -- SCZenz 00:44, 4 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not a request for deleted material!!!

Please accept my thanks for your kind advice. Your comments clarified some things for me. Incidentally I am a retired child psychiatrist. My name is Frank Rafferty, e-mail address fraffert@bellsouth.net ( notice no y )Maybe the Irish kinship came through the article.

I have tried registering two times before, but something gets fouled up with the passwords. After your comment, I immediately tried several more times inserting my name F.Rafferty and a new password. But immediately I get an error message that WP does not have a USER named F.Rafferty. Do I need some special electronic name. I only started with WP several months ago, and it does take a while to learn format, and style. Writing is easy. I just forgot the tildes in the excitement of trying to merge after a losing battle not to.

subst

When using template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template.

Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

Ethiopid should be a redirect

I notice that you're the one who protected Ethiopid. This page contains patently inaccurate, misleading information. The lead paragraph, which states that "Ethiopid is a racial classification usually used as part of a system also including Australoid, Mongoloid, Negroid, Caucasoid, and sometimes others such as Capoid" is false. The fact is that system of ethnic/racial classification traditionally includes Capoid -- not Ethiopid. (E.g., see Capoid. Further, under "Geographic scope," the article states that Ethiopid is a distinct "race," along with Caucasoid and Mongoloid, leaving the impression that Ethiopid is not a subgroup of Negroid, which is the term that belongs in the company of the two other terms, as "Caucasoid," "Mongoloid" and "Negroid"/"Africoid" are the three universally recognized, major "racial" groups of humankind. Since ancient times, "Ethiopian" has been synononymous with "black African." Further, the term "Ethiopid" is an exceedingly archaic one. Googling "Ethiopid" produces 6 pages; whereas, "Cushitic" produces 1300+ results.

Further, no anthropologist of the last half century would contend that "Ethiopid" is a separate racial category. The term roughly corresponds to "Cushitic." Participating editors have generally agreed that the term has little credibility/use. (See the article talk page.) I suggest the page and its inaccurate information be essentially obliterated and made a redirect to Cushitic. This page should include a simple sentence stating that the term "Ethiopid" is a somewhat archaic, equivalent term referring to Cushitic peoples. deeceevoice 09:24, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Substituting will place the code from the template on that page for good, as if you had typed it in yourself, rather than loading the template every time the page is viewed. I've been running through your contribs and substituting all the templates that need it, so don't worry about the ones you've already done. Deletion of Ed Gein (band)

I placed the following on Questioned speedy deletions, as I assume it was speedy deleted.

Deleted as 'n n bio'; I browsed this page briefly before the deletion and they seem notable enough to me. They're on Metal Blade Records, and released a demo & 2 LPs. The three album pages should not be recreated, IMO, but the main page should.

Should I question this deletion on Deletion review instead? Alternatively, IF you agree with me, would it be possible to revert the deletion? I'm certainly not trying to step on any toes. Thanks, Colonel Tom 01:41, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you. I assumed notability from the original text. I have no inherent interest in modifying the article(s). If you still maintain that notability is not evident, I have no objection per se to it being discussed / removed. And I would freely suggest that the author of the piece was incivil and vile in their response to the initial deletion. The absence of a passionate response on your part is, in my mind, a testament to your patience and your qualities as an editor (although I can only judge from this exchange!). My thanks. Colonel Tom 10:09, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another favour - re a speedy del req unrelated to yourself

I nominated AV Voice Changer Software for speedy delete, db-copyvio, and the creator removed the tag. I don't want to edit war; I'm not sure of protocol. I know I'm running the risk of not being WP:BOLD, but I guess I'd rather be WP:CIVIL. Can you review my speedy nom and either act on it or whack me with a wet fish for being too eager? Alternatively, can you tell me what I should do? I don't know the protocol when a tag is removed and a (quick) wikisearch didn't enlighten me. That's why I'm taking the liberty of asking you for your opinion / advice / intervention. (BTW, I previously posted similar on User_talk:Splash.) Thanks, Colonel Tom 10:30, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please be advised that the above issue seems to be in hand. I'll take the thought for the deed, and thank you gratefully. Colonel Tom 13:20, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

“Medicine” on MCOTW

After a bit of inactivity, Medicine has been selected as the new medicine collaboration of the week. I am taking the unusual step of informing all participants, not just those who voted for it, since I feel that it is important that this highest-level topic for our collaboration be extremely well-written. In addition, it is a core topic for Wikipedia 1.0 and serves as the introduction to our other articles. Yet general articles are the ones that are most difficult for individuals to write, which is why I have invited all participants. I hope it isn't an intrusion; I don't make plan to make a habit of sending out these messages. — Knowledge Seeker 02:16, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Since this isn't the result of an AC meeting, I have decided to go Old Skool. This note is to remind you that the elections are taking place now and will end at 23:50 UTC on 2006-04-29. Please vote here. Thanks. --Celestianpower háblame 20:42, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

I realize the message I left was rude. But I also think it is rude to go ahead and speedy-delete an article that's obviously not vandalism within 15 minutes of its creation. So in my view I merely responded to your rudeness in kind. I think this sort of problem could be eliminated alltogether if speedy-deleted content was still accessible to non-admins for a couple of weeks after being deleted. Or indeed if the admins would start being a little less trigger-happy and instead use a tag or something. --CygnusPius 15:39, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
