Kyle XY - link to a blog[edit]

I understand that it is generally bad form to create a link to a blog. Is that Wikipedia policy? I had created a link to a blog in the article on Kyle XY, but it was deleted. I want to advise Wikipedia that there were in fact a lot of hits to the link--about 8 per day. So there was reader interest in the link. Can I reinstate the link?(~~~~);

Image:398px-Killala.jpg listed for deletion[edit]

An image or media file that you uploaded, Image:398px-Killala.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please look there to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. Yes, it appears it was an error on my part. I will delete it, then.--File Éireann 21:03, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Lucia4.jpg[edit]

Warning sign
This image may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Lucia4.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of image pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Ricky81682 (talk) 08:40, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for above. I have deleted the image, as I have no copyright info from it, and note that it has already been deleted on Portuguese wikipedia, where I found it.--File Éireann 14:56, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

An Esperanzial note[edit]

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Celestianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Protect of Ethiopid- thanks[edit]

Hey Brendan, thanks for protecting that article for the moment. I actually agree with the sentiment, if not the action, of the anon who 'vandalised' it: namely, the article has been created by User:Learning1 as a vehicle to promote some misguided racial perceptions on Ethiopians. They are doing this quite clumsily tho', putting together a mish-mash of barely-relevant studies without attribution and a whole bunch of stolen pics to bolster whatever theory they have. The term 'Ethiopid' barely registers in searches; unless anything credible turns up I'd maintain the whole thing could be deleted.--cjllw | TALK 23:39, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

To be clear[edit]

I don't want to accuse you of bad faith or anything, but please review your decision to protect an article linked from the front page in a version that lacks both the image and a link to the image. Hipocrite - «Talk» 22:34, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Why did you remove the image when protecting the page? —Ruud 22:36, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Sorry I've put the image in the body of the article as a temporary compromise until consensus emerges re position.--File Éireann 22:37, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Well it should probably go at the top, but that can be done after feeling cool down a bit. Cheers, —Ruud 22:41, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

I am surprised that you protected the article after the image had been removed. The clear majority at the time wanted ther pictures up. Slamdac

No, you did the right thing - you put the image back. I fail the WP:AGF, and you were right. I'm resetting my modelwikipedian timer to today. Hipocrite - «Talk» 23:13, 2 February 2006 (UTC)

Block without warning[edit]

I was just about to warn the last vandal on Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy when I discovered you had blocked him. I'm not too worried about it, but I'd like to suggest that's a little premature, without at least one hand-written warning about why it's vandalism. -- SCZenz 00:44, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Not a request for deleted material!!!

Please accept my thanks for your kind advice. Your comments clarified some things for me. Incidentally I am a retired child psychiatrist. My name is Frank Rafferty, e-mail address fraffert@bellsouth.net ( notice no y )Maybe the Irish kinship came through the article.

I have tried registering two times before, but something gets fouled up with the passwords. After your comment, I immediately tried several more times inserting my name F.Rafferty and a new password. But immediately I get an error message that WP does not have a USER named F.Rafferty. Do I need some special electronic name. I only started with WP several months ago, and it does take a while to learn format, and style. Writing is easy. I just forgot the tildes in the excitement of trying to merge after a losing battle not to.

Another Esperanzial note...[edit]

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

Ethiopid should be a redirect[edit]

I notice that you're the one who protected Ethiopid. This page contains patently inaccurate, misleading information. The lead paragraph, which states that "Ethiopid is a racial classification usually used as part of a system also including Australoid, Mongoloid, Negroid, Caucasoid, and sometimes others such as Capoid" is false. The fact is that system of ethnic/racial classification traditionally includes Capoid -- not Ethiopid. (E.g., see Capoid. Further, under "Geographic scope," the article states that Ethiopid is a distinct "race," along with Caucasoid and Mongoloid, leaving the impression that Ethiopid is not a subgroup of Negroid, which is the term that belongs in the company of the two other terms, as "Caucasoid," "Mongoloid" and "Negroid"/"Africoid" are the three universally recognized, major "racial" groups of humankind. Since ancient times, "Ethiopian" has been synononymous with "black African." Further, the term "Ethiopid" is an exceedingly archaic one. Googling "Ethiopid" produces 6 pages; whereas, "Cushitic" produces 1300+ results.

Further, no anthropologist of the last half century would contend that "Ethiopid" is a separate racial category. The term roughly corresponds to "Cushitic." Participating editors have generally agreed that the term has little credibility/use. (See the article talk page.) I suggest the page and its inaccurate information be essentially obliterated and made a redirect to Cushitic. This page should include a simple sentence stating that the term "Ethiopid" is a somewhat archaic, equivalent term referring to Cushitic peoples. deeceevoice 09:24, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Template substitution[edit]

Info-pictogram.png
When using template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template.

Substituting will place the code from the template on that page for good, as if you had typed it in yourself, rather than loading the template every time the page is viewed. I've been running through your contribs and substituting all the templates that need it, so don't worry about the ones you've already done. Not all templates should be substituted though, there's a list that mentions most of them. Thanks. -Mulder416 16:40, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Deletion of Ed Gein (band)[edit]

I placed the following on Questioned speedy deletions, as I assume it was speedy deleted.

Deleted as 'n n bio'; I browsed this page briefly before the deletion and they seem notable enough to me. They're on Metal Blade Records, and released a demo & 2 LPs. The three album pages should not be recreated, IMO, but the main page should.

Should I question this deletion on Deletion review instead? Alternatively, IF you agree with me, would it be possible to revert the deletion? I'm certainly not trying to step on any toes. Thanks, Colonel Tom 01:41, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

  • Thank you. I assumed notability from the original text. I have no inherent interest in modifying the article(s). If you still maintain that notability is not evident, I have no objection per se to it being discussed / removed. And I would freely suggest that the author of the piece was incivil and vile in their response to the initial deletion. The absence of a passionate response on your part is, in my mind, a testament to your patience and your qualities as an editor (although I can only judge from this exchange!). My thanks. Colonel Tom 10:09, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Another favour - re a speedy del req unrelated to yourself[edit]

I nominated AV Voice Changer Software for speedy delete, db-copyvio, and the creator removed the tag. I don't want to edit war; I'm not sure of protocol. I know I'm running the risk of not being WP:BOLD, but I guess I'd rather be WP:CIVIL. Can you review my speedy nom and either act on it or whack me with a wet fish for being too eager? Alternatively, can you tell me what I should do? I don't know the protocol when a tag is removed and a (quick) wikisearch didn't enlighten me. That's why I'm taking the liberty of asking you for your opinion / advice / intervention. (BTW, I previously posted similar on User_talk:Splash.) Thanks, Colonel Tom 10:30, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Please be advised that the above issue seems to be in hand. I'll take the thought for the deed, and thank you gratefully. Colonel Tom 13:20, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter #2[edit]

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

“Medicine” on MCOTW[edit]

After a bit of inactivity, Medicine has been selected as the new medicine collaboration of the week. I am taking the unusual step of informing all participants, not just those who voted for it, since I feel that it is important that this highest-level topic for our collaboration be extremely well-written. In addition, it is a core topic for Wikipedia 1.0 and serves as the introduction to our other articles. Yet general articles are the ones that are most difficult for individuals to write, which is why I have invited all participants. I hope it isn't an intrusion; I don't make plan to make a habit of sending out these messages. — Knowledge Seeker 02:16, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Since this isn't the result of an AC meeting, I have decided to go Old Skool. This note is to remind you that the elections are taking place now and will end at 23:50 UTC on 2006-04-29. Please vote here. Thanks. --Celestianpower háblame 20:42, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3[edit]

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

A short Esperanzial update[edit]

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

I realize the message I left was rude. But I also think it is rude to go ahead and speedy-delete an article that's obviously not vandalism within 15 minutes of its creation. So in my view I merely responded to your rudeness in kind. I think this sort of problem could be eliminated alltogether if speedy-deleted content was still accessible to non-admins for a couple of weeks after being deleted. Or indeed if the admins would start being a little less trigger-happy and instead use a tag or something. --CygnusPius 15:39, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

PGNx Media[edit]

Hey Brendanconway,

I noticed that you were the moderator that brought PGNx Media into deletion discussion. What do you think the final outcome of it would be? Do you recommend adding anything to make sure that it can stay?

Thanks for your time. Thinkjose 23:45, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Pantip.com[edit]

Hi, could I ask you to remove the afd tag on Pantip.com? It is Thailand's largest Internet forum and the article that I'm putting together is genuine. It is not merely an advertisement, and I am in no way connected to it. Wisekwai 17:57, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Hello, I added the top ten Web sites ranking by Alexa into the article Pantip.com. I think this should solve the problem. --Manop - TH 21:11, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Pope Pius XII[edit]

Your edits look pretty solid overall and adequately referenced. However, could you keep the Holocaust section in chronological order in any further edits you want to make (I think only your first one violated this so far). Also, when you get a chance, add a full reference for The Defamation to the references section, and just use <>Author, Date, Page.<> in the text. savidan(talk) (e@) 22:54, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, I had to undo your most recent changes. I've explained it all in a new section on the talk. Since you are new to the article, I will assume good faith and assume that you did not know that this information about Slovakia has been rejected over and over as not relevant to the biogrpahy of Pius, despite repeated attempts by an anon to add it without explanation. Just thought you should know that, though. savidan(talk) (e@) 20:01, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
I have replied. I do apologize if I gave the impression that I thought you were anything other than an outstanding contributor to Wikipedia. It's just that most people who frequent that talk page would be aware of the situation with this anon adding large swathes of off-topic information about Slovakia, and I thought you should be aware of it. savidan(talk) (e@) 20:23, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
Not a problem. Thank you for understanding. I have no objection to a sentence about the Vatican response. If you have to quote, though, try to get the pithy part. savidan(talk) (e@) 20:49, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
Actually, since it looks like you have a copy of Lapide's book in front of you: one thing that you might want to look into. Some user whose name escapes me right now wanted to add something a little over a week ago about how Lapide argues that Weizsacker, who was the German-Vatican ambassador, was really a double agent who did not report Pius's protests to Hitler because he was afraid that they would lead to more violence. Something like that. If theres an index, you might look up Weizsacker. savidan(talk) (e@) 21:04, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

JzG[edit]

This user will not quit. He has vandalized my talkpage numerous times over the past three days

Before that he vandalized my talkpage[4]. Then when I reverted another user assumed he was right and reverted to JzG's version, but realized he was wrong and apologized. I was cordially and said it was alright. JzG has left numerous uncivil comments on my talkpage that can be viewed if one goes through the history of the page. He has also repeatedly been warned. I want him blocked immediately. Tchadienne 22:37, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Having reviewed the situation, a block would not be appropriate. I have unprotected your talk page though, and archived all old material permanently.--File Éireann 20:08, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Unspecified source for Image:Karofami.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Karofami.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. User:Angr 19:11, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Serious attitude problems with two editors[edit]

There have been some serious edit warrings over at Orthomolecular medicine, Megavitamin therapy, and Pseudoscience.

Primarily two editors have been very aggressive:

This user is also involved as their sympathizer and ally:

Myself and User:Cri du canard are the ones being attacked:

You are more than welcome to examine our contributions

Here is one of my messages about the problem:

  • I have just left a warning on MichaelCPrice's talk page. He, Linas, and others are violating quite a few rules here, including conspiring against other editors, incivility, failing to assume good faith, accusing others of bad faith edits, personal attacks, etc.. Their personal edit histories are very telling. They are also coordinating their efforts to attempt to trap others in 3rr violations, and are simply taking total control over the orthomolecular medicine and megavitamin therapy articles, with MichaelCPrice apparently functioning as the ringleader of the gang. He has been warned by others. I suggest that several administrators make a serious investigation, possibly leading to long blocks. I have never seen such organized aggressiveness before here at Wikipedia. -- Fyslee 23:07, 11 August 2006 (UTC) [5]

These good messages of warning from a fellow editor illustrate the problem. (The intervening belligerant responses by them say even more!):

Three Warnings to User:Linas:

Warning to User:MichaelCPrice:

Another related comment from editor Jefffire: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Jefffire&diff=prev&oldid=69208687

Now I'm making a request for investigation and help from editors and administrators because it is beyond our control. These editors are extremely aggressive. -- Fyslee 23:19, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

August Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Block of User:Comanche cph[edit]

I would prefer to have mailed you about this, I feel all admins should have working mail links, but yours seems not to be working. I see you blocked and unblocked this user Comanche cph (talkcontribspage movesblock userblock log) recently. I've given the user a 24 hour for edit warring on Scandinavia. If you could mail me with info on why you took your block back, (or answer here, or on AN/I, as you prefer) that would be swell. ++Lar: t/c 17:10, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

I'd be glad to. This user is establishing a pattern of edits which break WP:Civil & WP:3RR especially. You will see that I gave him a 48 hour block previously. On this occasion, I reflexively blocked him for returning to his old habits, but after reviewing a second time, I decided that one warning should be given. I continue to monitor his behaviour whenever I am on line--File Éireann 20:31, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

September Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

St Bernadette & Lourdes[edit]

I can't pin down a contemporary online source that will prove to your satisfaction that the shrine was dedicated specifically to Persephone but the following excerpt does allude to it:

A contemporary account of the apparitions at Lourdes: "BIBLE AND LOURDES ROSARY AND LOURDES" "In the niche of the Grotto where Mary will appear there was a square stone of different composition from the Grotto which apparently at one time was used for pagan sacrifices. How appropriate and meaningful for Mary to stand on that stone since she is the one who came to crush the serpent's head through her Son." http://www.ewtn.com/library/Prayer/ROSLOURD.HTM

I am sorry I cannot give online ref's to how the original niche was "altered" from how it looked when the BVM appeared but it must have been completed when Joseph Fabisch the sculptor chipped away at it in order to get the present statue of Our Lady to fit - it was twenty inches too big. (see Fr. Rene Laurentin "Bernadette Speaks" p508). Rather than chip away the roof he choose the floor of the niche, the ground on which the BVM stood.

The best scholarly source for further details would probably be Fr. Laurentins 30 volume research work on Lourdes but I have no access to it. Unless you have any compelling arguments against its inclusion I will probably revise it to say something like it was reputed to be a pagan shrine at one time with a footnote mentioning unverified claims that it was specifically Persephone until such times as I can pin it down to a contemporary resource.

November Esperanza Newsletter[edit]

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Sources for the status of Irish in NI after St Andrews Agreement[edit]

I have written a line or two in the aricle "[Irish Language]]" about the Irish Language Act discussed these days following the St Andrews Agreement but maybe there is more to be written in this article or in aticles specialised in North Ireland. Because I follow the news considering language policy, but I do not have the time to write something more myself about something I don't know enough, I am listing some links for the issue to be used by someone interested:

Invitation to Wikipedia meetup in London[edit]

Wikimedia UK logo

Date: 13:00 onwards, Sunday 10 August 2008

Venue: Penderel's Oak pub, Holborn WC1 map

More information: Wikipedia:Meetup/London 12

Hello,

I noticed that you have listed yourself as a Wikipedian in London, so I thought you might like to come to one of our monthly social meetups. The next one is going to be on Sunday 10 August, which might well be rather short notice, but if you can't come this time, we try to have one every second Sunday of the month.

If you haven't been before, these meetups are mainly casual social events for Wikipedia enthusiasts in which we chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy. It's a great way to meet some very keen Wikipedians, but we'd also love for you to come along if you're interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, or other collaborative wiki projects too.

The location is a pub that is quite quiet and family friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so hopefully younger Wikipedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is certainly not required!

Although the meetups are popular, many UK-based editors still don't know about them. It would be great to welcome some fresh faces, so I hope you can come along.

Yours,

James F. (talk) 09:27, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Please forgive the slightly impersonal mass-invite!

Hi Brendan, I hope you can help with the following: I found File:PICT0042.JPG, a photo you took, and I've asked for it to be renamed to File:Clew Bay.JPG. Then I found Clew Bay with Clare Island.JPG without any source/author. It was renamed from "PICT0040", seeing that file "0042" is from your hand and has the same topic, I was wondering if "Clew Bay with Clare Island" is also yours? The file is no longer available on en: wiki. And finally, for File:P1010012.JPG (on en: wiki) - can you give a description for what this is, so that it can be transfered to Commons? Thanks and kind regards, Deadstar (talk) 14:31, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your help. It appeared the bust of John MacBride was already transfered to Commons (File:MacBride.jpg), I've added the original upload info and added a tag to the image here. I've also added information to Clew Bay with Clare Island to reflect it is in fact your image, with a PD-User license (same as for PICT0042). If you don't agree with any of those changes, please revert. Kind regards, Deadstar (talk) 10:02, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

London Wikimedia Fundraiser[edit]

Good evening! This is a friendly message from Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry, inviting you to the London Wikimedia Fundraising party on 19th December 2010, in approximately one week. This party is being held at an artistic London venue with room for approximately 300 people, and is being funded by Ed Saperia, a non-Wikipedian who has a reputation for holding exclusive events all over London. This year, he wants to help Wikipedia, and is subsidising a charity event for us. We're keen to get as many Wikimedians coming as possible, and we already have approximately 200 guests, including members of the press, and some mystery guests! More details can be found at http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/London - expect an Eigenharp, a mulled wine hot tub, a free hog roast, a haybale amphitheatre and more. If you're interested in coming - and we'd love to have you - please go to the ten.wikipedia page and follow the link to the Facebook event. Signing up on Facebook will add you to the party guestlist. Entry fee is a heavily subsidised £5 and entry is restricted to over 18s. It promises to be a 10th birthday party to remember! If you have any questions, please email me at chasemewiki at gmail.com.

Hope we'll see you there, (and apologies for the talk page spam) - Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 18:07, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mllywchilyntnjnskkwyll[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and the page that you created has been or soon will be deleted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Mhiji 00:02, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

Dear Brendanconway,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk)23:24, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

International emergency medicine[edit]

Hi Brendan,

It doesn't look like you're very active these days, but a newbie student is hoping to expand International emergency medicine, and you're one of the few folks who ever did anything useful on that page. If you've got a bit of time, would you mind checking in on the page after a while? I don't know how soon he hopes to get started; he posted a note about it at WT:MED today. New medical organization[edit]

Hi

I'm contacting you because, as a participant at Wikiproject Medicine, you may be interested in a new multinational non-profit organization we're forming at m:Wikimedia Medicine. Even if you don't want to be actively involved, any ideas you may have about our structure and aims would be very welcome on the project's talk page.

Our purpose is to help improve the range and quality of free online medical content, and we'll be working with like-minded organizations, such as the World Health Organization, professional and scholarly societies, medical schools, governments and NGOs - including Translators Without Borders.

Hope to see you there! --Anthonyhcole (talk) 21:14, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Competent Crew[edit]

Ambox warning yellow.svg

The article Competent Crew has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

no evidence of notability

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 16:39, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

Hey! Thanks for your help at RFPP, it's greatly appreciated! However, would you be so kind as to use the templates on the page when responding? It allows the archive bot to recognize that a request has been handled and then can properly manage the page. Thanks! Mike VTalk 01:58, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Deletion of user talk page[edit]

Hello, Brendanconway. I am wondering why you deleted User talk:Wikikikikik. You gave "vandalism" as the reason, but the talk page wasn't vandalism, although the user's edits were. JamesBWatson (talk) 09:47, 16 April 2013 (UTC) Apologies, I am a bit rusty - I have restored the page as soon as I received your message. I am rereading the appropriate policies--File Éireann 10:13, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. JamesBWatson (talk) 10:58, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
Your comments about being "rusty" and being "being away most of the time" prompted me to have a look at your editing history, and I do see that you had been rather inactive for a long time. Welcome back. You may or may not know that at some time in the past, there was a change of policy on deletion of user talk pages. It used to be common practice to delete user talk pages in various situations: for example, the talk page of an indefinitely blocked user was often deleted after a while. The new situation is that user talk pages are not normally deleted, because the record of messages may be needed. (Even messages to an indef-blocked user may need to be consulted in some situations, such as if the user returns via sockpuppetry, or if the messages contain information relating to reasons for edits on other pages.) There are a few exceptions: for example, if a user creates a talk page to post spam, the page may be deleted and then re-created with new content, but even that is unlikely to be suitable if there are legitimate posts mixed in with the spam, as those legitimate posts would be lost. JamesBWatson (talk) 11:09, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Sock puppetry[edit]

Hi there. I noticed your note on The Great Redirector's talk page. My understanding is that undisclosed alternate accounts are allowed unless they are being used abusively... is this account doing something abusive? A quick look at the account's contributions suggests not but perhaps I have missed something. Thanks, 28bytes (talk) 10:28, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, I agree on futher looking into matter. I am still updating on Wikipedia after being away most of the time.--File Éireann 10:50, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) The sockpuppetry policy says "Except when doing so would defeat the purpose of having a legitimate alternative account, editors using alternative accounts should provide links between the accounts." I am inclined to be doubtful about any editor who has alternative accounts but for some reason will not disclose what those accounts are. The user may not be using multiple accounts abusively, but as long as he/she doesn't tell us what the other account is, we can't know. If he/she has nothing to hide, then one would think he/she would have no objection to a full disclosure. I therefore think Brendanconway is right to ask the user about this, though personally I would not have mentioned the possibility of a block in my first approach to the user. JamesBWatson (talk) 10:58, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for taking a second look. And welcome back as an active editor! 28bytes (talk) 11:24, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

soosim rollback request[edit]

i don't have a problem being told no. that's ok. i just wanted to point out that the 'edit warring' label is 90% done by one person - carolmooredc. she follows me around and reverts my stuff and then accuses me of edit warring. this has gone on for years. i am used to it - no big deal anymore. but here's the interesting part. after i applied for rollback rights, guess who came along, following me, to apply as well? yep - carolmooredc. and she was granted the rights. i suspect since i don't go labelling her as an edit warrior allowed her to be approved. just sayin' Soosim (talk) 05:22, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

You edited "Clare Island" for me, thanks.[edit]

I will be grateful for your help on another matter: Smyrnium olusatrum - an umbelliferus flowering plant is entered in Wikipedia under "Alexanders". The latter is (of course) the common name and I think all plants should be entered under their botanical name. I'll have to check, probably all the algae (my forte) are in their botanical name as most don't have a common name. I would be grateful for your help and advice as to how to correct things. Both "Alexanders" and "Smyrnium olusatrum" (or Smyrnium? - will have to check) are entered. User:Osborne 19:12, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

I have responded to you on your talk page.--File Éireann 20:29, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Alexanders[edit]

Many thanks for your advice concerning Alexanders. All plants and indeed all animals have botanical , or zoological names. Common animals such as Blackbird, robin etc may, I suppose, be entered under their common name and cross referenced to their zoological names. Not all plants have common names, indeed most do not eg. many flowering plants, most algae, (probably) all mosses, liverworts etc. Some birds have more than one common name in English. The "Latin" names are international. So I believe all plants should be entered in Wikipedia under their botanical name and cross-referenced with their common name. Often the comnmon applies to the whole genus! To the common person the buttercup is applied to all species of Ranunculus. (I'll have to check what Wikipedia does with this genus!) So I think it best if you can arrange to have the Alexanders (common name) re-entered as Smyrnium olusatrum L. and cross-referenced. There is a Smyrnium perfoliatum(Perfoliate Alexanders elsewhere in Europe, I have no further information about this or indeed if there are other species elsewhere in the world! Thanks, Osborne 14:58, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Done.--File Éireann 19:18, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks. However the file also shows "For other uses Smyrnium olusatrum (disambiguation)" - Is this required as the file is entitled "Smyrnium olusatrum"?Osborne 16:20, 28 April 2013 (UTC) Further thought: one paragraph starts: "Look out for this tall plant..." Does not seem like the usual phrase for Wikipedia. Should it be changed?Osborne 16:20, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, I have removed the unneeded disambiguation line at the top. Feel free to edit the article to remove any phrases you do not like. Listen, this article is very short and not every sentence has a citation. Is there any more information you could dig out, or citations you could find for the information already in the article. For example, have you got information about the spread of this plant in different parts of Europe. How is it propagated?
By the way, when you are editing, the third button accross after B and I which looks like a pencil allows you to sign and lets others link to your talk pave. Regards, Brendan--File Éireann 17:25, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

Church Fathers[edit]

Regarding your re-insertion of people condemned as heretics by Councils of the Church as "Church Fathers". I had a (Google) look at the book that you cited as rationale for reversion. I saw a lot of praise for Origen, for example. That's not in doubt. The dude knew his Scripture. But I saw no citation for him being a Church Father. Did I miss something? Laurel Lodged (talk) 21:52, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

The point is that the name of the book is "Church Fathers: From Clement of Rome to Augustine". Both Tertullian and Origen have a dedicated chapter of their own, just like the other Fathers. The last pope says of Origen "He reminds us with deep delight that in the prayerful reading of Scripture and in consistent commitment to life, the Church is ever renewed and rejuvenated." What I am saying is that my own belief is that these guys are generally accepted as Fathers, despite their lapses. They have been in there in the article for years and have a lot of references there. So you would need to establish a consensus on the talk page prior to removing them. In my view, don't do it, read more widely and you will find out that, in fact, a broad body of opinion accepts these as fathers (although they are not canonised as saints).--File Éireann 22:34, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
Also many websites list them as Fathers e.g. [12], [13], [14]. It is the Protestant edition [15], also the Eastern Orthodox [16]. So best leave it in the article.--File Éireann 22:46, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Just for the record, both the Orthodox Catholic Church and the Roman Church regard Origen as an heretic, although post mortem. Ri Osraige (talk) 02:42, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

This month we hear the news that the Bible is to be made into a film after outstanding success of a biblical miniseries on the History Channel, and we have seen the release of Iraqi Pastor Ali Hamzah from his confinement in Iraq.

After last month's spotlight on the Jesus work group, the flagship article, Jesus, was nominated for Good Article status after much work from FutureTrillionaire and History2007, and provisionally passed by the reviewer, although they have requested a second opinion. Our many thanks for the hard work that has gone into restoring this article to a quality piece of work.

This month the second largest denomination of Christianity, the Eastern Orthodox Church, celebrates Easter and the death and resurrection of the Son of God Jesus Christ.

Contest of the month
No particular contest this month. I am however getting rather close to getting together a more or less complete set of articles relating to different areas of Christianity which can be found in recent reference sources on the broad topic of Christianity, and about various subtopics, which I hope to have finished in the next few weeks. I wonder what the rest of you might think of, maybe, making the contests of future months be basically directed at filling in the gaps of our existing coverage of topics, like those topics given significant coverage in specialized reference works which we don't yet have content on, and giving the thanks, and rewards, whatever they might be, to those who create and develop such content. By John Carter

Featured content and GA report
Since the last report;

Featured report; Madonna in the Church, by Ceoil, Truthkeeper88, and Johnbod was promoted to Featured Article status. Crucifixion and Last Judgement was promoted to featured picture status, after nomination by Crisco 1492.

Wells Cathedral, by Rodw, Robert of Ghent, by User:Ealdgyth, Christianity in Medieval Scotland, by Sabrebd, and Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, also by Sabrebd were promoted to GA status.

Also these past months, the DYKs on the main page included Lectionary 311, by Leszek Jańczuk; Herr Christ, der einig Gotts Sohn, by Gerda Arendt; Whalsay Parish Church, by Ipigott, Rosiestep, Nvvchar, Dr. Blofeld; Interpretatio Christiana, by Altenmann; First Congregational Church, Salt Lake City, by Orlady; Church of King Charles the Martyr, Royal Tunbridge Wells, by The C of E; First Church in Albany (Reformed), by Daniel Case; Pope Anastasius II, by AbstractIllusions; Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Palma, by Dr. Blofeld, Ipigott, Rosiestep; Colan Church, by Rosiestep, Nvvchar, Ipigott; Notre Dame Cathedral, Papeete, Bloom6132, Church of St. Wenceslaus (New Prague, Minnesota), by Elkman; St. Joseph Catholic Church (San Antonio, Texas), by Gilliam; Doubting Thomas, by Johnbod; Robert of Ghent, by Ealdgyth; and Holy Trinity Church, Holdgate, by Peter I. SPOTLIGHT

This month, we turn our attention to the Encyclopedic articles sub-group, which aims to provide "a collection point for lists of articles contained in other reference sources relating to Christianity, which could serve as a basis for developing our own content". Created by John Carter, it is primarily a list of links, red or otherwise, for subjects which have an article in the reference works listed therein. This serves as a very useful list if any project members are "stuck for what to do" and there remains lots of potential for articles developed from this list.

Calendar
This coming month (end-April through end-May) includes Easter Sunday for the Eastern Orthodox Church. Other major feasts in the next month include those of Matthias the Apostle, The Venerable Bede, and Empress Helena.

WikiProject Christianity Newsletter (June 2013)[edit]

ICHTHUS

June 2013

From the Editor

ბუმბული.png
Since its formation in 2006, WikiProject Christianity has come a long way. A significant number of new articles have appeared on a wide range of topics, and the quality of some key articles has seen dramatic improvement. Yet, by the very nature of the open, crowd-sourced development environment in which we operate, as the number of pages in the project has increased at times our attention has been naturally diluted. We should of course strive for quality everywhere, but we should remember that this newsletter is called Ichthus.

Starting this month we will start a "Focus on" series, where we will try to "bring Jesus back" and focus on him. For five consecutive issues we will focus on one aspect of the study of Jesus. The goal of this series is to inform our members of what the project contains and highlight those articles which have reached quality and stability.

From this month until November we will focus on the historical Jesus, a topic which has been the subject of much discussion on article talk pages, as well as the general media. This is an important topic, and we have a good set of well referenced articles on that now. Then, starting in December we will focus on Christ, and the spiritual and theological elements that the title entails. Following that the review of the life and ministry of Jesus in the New Testament, his miracles, and parables will take place. And each month the "Bookshelf" will mention a book that fits the theme of the month.

We hope you will enjoy this journey as we present a new aspect of Jesus each month. And given that as the number of project pages increases, the ratio of those watching the pages declines, we hope that more of you will watch some of these central pages that help define this project.

Church of the month

Church of All Saints, Winthorpe - geograph.org.uk - 1117642.jpg

The current building of All Saints' Church, Winthorpe in Nottinghamshire, England which was completed in 1888, is at least the third version of the church, which dates back to at least the early 13th century.

Good articles and DYKs
The article Jesus received the good article mark last month, as did Cleeve Abbey. A number of churches were featured on the main page in the DYK section in May, namely St. Lamberti, Hildesheim, Karja church, Braaby Church, St Patrick's Liverpool, Vlah Church, Freerslev Church, Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, Mata-Utu, St. Michael's Cathedral (Sitka, Alaska), St. Lamberti, Hildesheim, Karja church, Braaby Church, St. Pierre Cathedral, Saint-Pierre, Mont Saint Michel Abbey, St Patrick's Church, Liverpool, Vlah Church, St Catherine of Siena Church, Cocking, Catedral Nuestra Señora de La Asunción, Roholte Church, Notre Dame Cathedral, Taiohae, Leicester Abbey, Caracas Cathedral, Caldey Abbey, King's Mead Priory, Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Hong Kong) andAll Saints' Church, Winthorpe, as well as the hymn What Wondrous Love Is This.

Focus on...

Christ icon.jpg

THE
HISTORICAL JESUS

Did Jesus exist? Did he walk the streets of Jerusalem? The Historicity of Jesus article answers these questions with a firm affirmative. Historicity does not discuss if Jesus walked on water, but if he walked at all. The issue was the subject of scholarly debate before the end of last century, but the academic debate is almost over now. As the article discusses, virtually all academic opposition to the existence of Jesus has evaporated away now and scholars see it as a concluded issue. The discussion is now just among mostly self-published non-academics.

In 2011 John Dickson tweeted that if anyone finds a professor of history who denies that Jesus lived,he would eat a page of his Bible (Matthew 1 he said). Dickson's Bible is still safe.

The article discusses the ancient sources that relate to Jesus and how they fit together to establish that he existed. The evidence for Jesus is not just based on the Christian gospels, but by inter-relating them with non-Christian sources, and the fact that they all "fit together". Moreover, the existence of Jesus is not supported just by Christian scholars and in recent years the detailed knowledge of Jewish scholars and their discoveries (e.g. Shlomo Pines' discovery of the Syriac Josephus) has proven highly beneficial. We encourage you to read and follow the article, for the existence of Jesus is central to the existence of Christianity.

Just a few years after its publication, Van Voorst's book has become the standard comprehensive text for the discussion of ancient sources that relate to Jesus and his historicity. This detailed yet really readable book has received wide ranging endorsements - Blomberg and Harris separately referring to it as the most comprehensive treatment of the subject.

The Wikipedia Library gets Wikipedia editors free access to reliable sources that are behind paywalls. Because you are signed on as a medical editor, I thought you'd want to know about our most recent donation from Cochrane Collaboration.

  • Cochrane Collaboration is an independent medical nonprofit organization that conducts systematic reviews of randomized controlled trials of health-care interventions, which it then publishes in the Cochrane Library.
  • Cochrane has generously agreed to give free, full-access accounts to 100 medical editors. Individual access would otherwise cost between $300 and $800 per account.
  • If you are still active as a medical editor, come and sign up :)

July 2013

From the Editor

ბუმბული.png
Welcome to the July 2013 issue of Ichthus. We focus on the chronology of Jesus, as well as looking back at the project content improved over the last month.

WP:X has gained another Featured Article, Gospel of the Ebionites, by Ignocrates. The Gospel of the Ebionites is the name scholars give to an apocryphal gospel that supposedly belonged to a sect known as the Ebionites. It consists of seven short quotations discovered in a heresiology known as the Panarion, written by Epiphanius of Salamis, and its original title remains unknown. The text is a gospel harmony composed in Greek, and is believed to have been written during the middle of the 2nd century.

St Mihangel's Church, Llanfihangel yn Nhowyn was promoted to Good Article status, as was two other welsh churches, St Enghenedl's Church, Llanynghenedl, and St Peter's Church, Llanbedrgoch.

The main page also featured several DYK hooks for articles in our project, namely Bob Fu, List of places of worship in Tandridge (district), Catholic Press, Garendon Abbey, St. John's Episcopal Church (Jersey City, New Jersey), Pargev Martirosyan, Praskvica Monastery, Heather Preceptory, St. Augustin, Coburg, Longleat Priory, St Mihangel's Church, Llanfihangel yn Nhowyn, St Enghenedl's Church, Llanynghenedl, Christianization of Moravia, Christianization of Bohemia, Repton Abbey, St Peter's Church, Llanbedrgoch, Medingen Abbey, Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, St. James on-the-Lines, and Leopold Karl von Kollonitsch.

THE
HISTORICAL JESUS

When did Jesus live? When did he die? How do we know? We do, in fact, have excellent information about the time intervals for the life and death of Jesus. As in other people who lived and died in the first century, this gives an approximate date range, but still, give or take 3-4 years and we have pretty good estimates confirmed by a number of really diverse sources, ranging from inscriptions in Delphi to Roman and Jewish sources. The Chronology of Jesus article discusses how a wide variety of Christian, Jewish and Roman sources are used to establish the time-frame for the life and death of Jesus.

And all of his data fits together. For instance, the chronology of Paul had been discussed based on the Book of Acts long ago, then the Delphi Inscription is found in the 20th century in the Temple of Apollo. And guess what.. it confirms it and totally dates his trial in Corinth, which helps reaffirm the date of the crucifixion of Jesus. The same date range is independently estimated from the writings of Josephus on the Baptist's death. And it fits Isaac Newton's astronomical models for the crucifixion date as well as the independent lunar calculations of Humphreys. As that article shows, all these dates just fit together.

This two volume book (with a very apt title) is gem-filled with scholarly research. Paul Maier's article in the first volume is a classic study on the chronology of Jesus and provides a useful summary of a number of issues.

THE
HISTORICAL JESUS

What was Jesus like? What did he preach? Did he claim to be the Messiah? Did he predict an apocalypse? What can we know about him outside a religious context? The Historical Jesus article discusses what can be known about Jesus with various degrees of probability. While scholars agree on the over all flow and outline of Jesus' life (his baptism by John, debated Jewish authorities, healings, and his crucifixion by Pilate) they have built various and diverging portraits of the rest of his life. These range from minimalist portraits that accept very little of the gospel accounts to maximalists who accept most of the accounts as historical.

The portraits of Jesus have at times been unwitting reflections of the researchers themselves, and Crossan once quipped that some authors "do autobiography and call it biography". However, the study of historical Jesus has made one thing clear: there is so much to learn about Jesus that the more one looks, the more there is to discover.

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity[edit]

Information icon Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Nomination of Churchill House for deletion[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Churchill House is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Churchill House until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. Extended confirmed protection[edit]

Padlock-blue.svg Hello, Brendanconway. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.
Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:48, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers[edit]

Hi Brendanconway.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)
