Night of Champions (2014) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by WWE. It took place on September 21, 2014, at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.[1] It was the eighth annual Night of Champions event.

The theme of the pay-per-view was that every championship would be defended on that night. This was the first pay-per-view to feature the latest version of championship belts, which were introduced the night after SummerSlam, such as the new WWE logo on the WWE World Heavyweight Championship (while the Big Gold Belt was retired), whereas the other championship belts have minor modifications. The main event saw John Cena defeat Brock Lesnar by disqualification after Seth Rollins interfered.

Background

Night of Champions featured professional wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that played out on WWE's primary television programs, Raw and SmackDown. Wrestlers portrayed heroes or villains as they followed a series of events that built tension, and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches.[2][3]

At SummerSlam, Brock Lesnar defeated John Cena to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. On the edition of August 19 of Main Event, Triple H announced that Lesnar would defend the championship against Cena in a rematch at Night of Champions.[4]

On the August 25 episode of Raw, Cesaro became the number one contender for the WWE United States Championship by defeating Rob Van Dam.[5] On August 29, it was announced on WWE.com that Sheamus would defend the title against Cesaro at the event.

At SummerSlam, Dolph Ziggler defeated The Miz to win the WWE Intercontinental Championship. On the edition of August 18 of Raw, Miz defeated Ziggler by count-out in a rematch for the title.[6] On the edition of September 2 of Main Event, it was announced that Ziggler would defend the title against Miz at the event.[7]

At SummerSlam, Paige defeated AJ Lee to win the WWE Divas Championship. On the September 1 episode of Raw, Stephanie McMahon granted Nikki Bella a Divas Championship match at Night of Champions, but they were interrupted by AJ, who reminded Stephanie of her rematch.[8] On September 5, Stephanie announced that Paige would defend the title against AJ and Nikki in a Triple threat match at the event.

On the edition of August 18 of Raw, Mark Henry attacked Rusev.[6] On the edition of September 1 of Raw, Henry and Big Show defeated Erick Rowan and Luke Harper by disqualification after Rusev attacked Henry.[8] On edition of September 5 of SmackDown, Henry challenged Rusev to a match at Night of Champions, with Lana accepting on Rusev's behalf.[9]

On the August 18 episode of Raw, Gold and Stardust defeated WWE Tag Team Champions The Usos in a non-title match.[6] On the edition of August 25 of Raw, Goldust and Stardust defeated The Usos by count-out in a rematch for the titles and attacked The Usos after the match.[5] On the August 29 episode of SmackDown, after Jey Uso defeated Stardust, Goldust and Stardust attacked the Usos again.[5] On the September 1 episode of Raw, after Goldust defeated Jimmy Uso, Goldust and Stardust attacked the Usos again, resulting in Jey Uso suffering an injured leg.[8] On September 8, it was announced on WWE.com that The Usos would defend the titles against Gold and Stardust at the event.

On the September 1 episode of Raw, Chris Jericho insulted Randy Orton on his Highlight Reel show.[8] On the September 8 episode of Raw, Orton attacked Jericho in the WWE trainer’s room while Jericho was being medically treated after losing to Bray Wyatt in a steel cage match.[10] On September 9, it was announced on WWE.com that Jericho would face Orton at the event.

The pre-show featured the return of the Peep Show with Christian as the host, and Chris Jericho as the guest.

A match was supposed to take place against Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, but was cancelled the day before the event, as Reigns was rushed to the hospital for surgery on an incarcerated hernia, and was deemed unable to compete.[11] During the event, Rollins ordered that the match take place, causing him to win via forfeit.

The English commentators were Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler and John "Bradshaw" Layfield while there were also Spanish and German commentators ringside. Lillian Garcia and Justin Roberts were ring announcers while Byron Saxton conducted backstage interviews. Florida Georgia Line were special guest commentators during the Intercontinental Championship match.

Analysis was provided by a pre-show panel of Booker T, Alex Riley and Big Show hosted by Renee Young.

Pre-show

Preshow featured the return of Christian (wrestler hosting with Chris Jericho as the guest.

Main card

The first match of the night saw The Usos (Jimmy and Jey) defend the WWE Tag Team Championships against Goldust and Stardust. The Usos dominated throughout the match. When Jey Uso attempted a splash on Stardust, he raised his knee up just before Jey Uso could land. Stardust immediately rolled-up Jey for a pin and claimed the victory and winning the Tag Team Championship.

The second match featured Sheamus defending the WWE United States Championship against Cesaro. Sheamus executed a Brogue Kick out of nowhere to obtain a victory and retain his title.

In the next match, Dolph Ziggler put his WWE Intercontinental Championship on the line against The Miz. The Miz was accompanied by his "stunt double" Damien Mizdow while Ziggler was accompanied by his ally R-Ziggler. Miz won the match with a roll-up on Ziggler while holding his tights, becoming a four-time Intercontinental Championship.

Seth Rollins then walked down the aisle to claim his victory against Roman Reigns via forfeit (similar to his forfeit victory against Dean Ambrose at Battleground). This match originally was supposed to take place but Reigns was rushed to the hospital for an incarcerated hernia. After obtaining the victory, Dean Ambrose arrived to the arena via taxi cab and began to head to the ring to attack Rollins. The Authority emerged from backstage to separate the two and restore order. Security later emerged and tied Ambrose's hands behind his back and took him out of the arena.

In the fifth match Rusev faced Mark Henry. Before the match began, Lilian Garcia sang the national anthem while Henry became emotional. At one point, Henry was able to execute The World's Strongest Slam, but could not capitalize. Rusev claimed the victory by applying the Accolade on Henry, who submitted.

The sixth match saw Randy Orton face Chris Jericho one-on-one. Towards the end of the match, Jericho executed a Codebreaker but Orton kicked out. Jericho attempted a splash but Orton countered into a mid-air RKO. Orton pinned Jericho to claim the victory.

Paige defended the WWE Divas Championship in a triple threat match against Nikki Bella and AJ Lee in the penultimate match. AJ Lee won the match after she flipped Nikki of the apron to the floor and won after she performed the Black Widow on Paige and made her tap out to the submission move.

Main Event

In the main event, Brock Lesnar defended the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against John Cena. This was Brock's first title defense. Cena executed an AA within the first half of the match but Lesnar powered out of one. Throughout the match, Cena executed four AA's, Lesnar kicked out of three of them.Lesnar also Performed the Kimura Lock various times. Cena executed another AA after applying an STF. As Cena went for the cover, Rollins attacked Cena with the "Money in the Bank" briefcase causing a disqualification. Rollins laid out Lesnar with a Curb Stomp and then attempted to cash in his contract but Cena attacked him before the bell could actually ring. Lesnar then executed an F5 on Cena to close the show.

Aftermath

The following night on Raw, The Miz defended his Intercontinental title against Dolph Ziggler in a Night of Champions rematch. Ziggler would regain the title after rolling up The Miz with a handful of tights, and thus making Ziggler a 3-time Intercontinental Champion. During his weekly interview with Michael Cole, Triple H announced a battle royal would take place on the September 26 episode of SmackDown and the winner would face Ziggler later in the night for the championship.[12][13]

Reception

James Calwdell, from PWTorch, gave the Main Event *** 3/4. He called it a "solid title match". However, he complained about the Intercontinental and Divas title changes.[14] Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter called the US Title match and the Orton vs. Jericho "excellent matches." About the US Title match, he said it looked "like a G-1 match with a lot of stiff blows and reversals back-and-forth."[15]
