Template editor

(add requestview requests)

See Wikipedia:Template editor for granting guidelines. Applicants should show some evidence that they generally meet the guidelines outlined there, however administrators may use their discretion in determining which editors meet the general standard. Consider posting {{subst:template editor granted}} to the user talk page of approved users.

Although I do not regularly submit template edit requests, I've been working with templates for quite a while. I would be interested with helping keep the backlog down, which although never overwhelming, could do with a bit of pruning now and then. I would also be interested with occasionally editing edit notices; Although this is rarely needed, I have seen a few requests for this on IRC, so it would be useful to be able to fulfil these requests. --Mdann52talk to me! 16:21, 16 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Mdann52: You satisfy the granting guidelines 1-4 no problems, but after looking through your contributions to the template and template talk namespaces I couldn't find any examples of edits to the sandboxes of protected templates, or requests for edits to protected templates. These are necessary to satisfy points 5 and 6 of the granting guidelines. Do you have any examples of these kinds of edits? Best — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 23:47, 20 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I can say that Mdann and I discussed some template changes on IRC that I carried out as a TE per suggestion by him. I'm not sure if this is sufficient to satisfy point six, and I'm not aware of whether or not there were any sandbox edits made by them to satisfy point five. I'll leave this to the discretion of the deciding admin. — {{U|Technical 13}} (etc) 23:54, 20 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Mr. Stradivarius: I've made a few edits to sandboxes and the like, but not sure how many of those templates were protected or not. I have made a TE request recently on WT:AFC#Template-protected edit request on 5 November 2014 (it was deliberately vague, as it was meant to gauge consensus for implementation across various templates; As the template in question was just a banner template for the rest, it made sense to put the request on it). I've been unable to spot any others either, but I think I usually poke someone on IRC with the issue when appropriate, as opposed to making a request. --Mdann52talk to me! 17:33, 21 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Not done Thank you for the reply. I'm afraid I'm closing this as not done due to my concerns about points five and six of the granting guidelines. However, there shouldn't be any problems with granting this right to you after you have made a few more successful edit requests, so don't hesitate to make a new request here when you've done that. From time to time I need to edit a template-editor protected template. I am a fairly experienced and active template editor, who has been editing templates in one way or another for over 10 years. Protected templates I have created include {{Asbox}} (used on about 2 million pages), {{Dated maintenance category}} (590k+ pages), {{DMCA}} (740k+ pages) and many many more. I have worked on almost all the very highly transcluded templates, including a complete re-work of the {{Portal}} (5 million pages +) template system that simplified and created a consistent look and feel across the project. I have a basic grasp of Lua. All the best: Rich Farmbrough18:52, 20 November 2014 (UTC).
As no one has commented yet, I'll make a few points.
  • Firstly, this is likely to be controversial given the arbitration case two years ago and subsequent enforcement blocks.
  • I am happy to point out that there has been no return to problematic editing, and Rich's current editing seems entirely positive. His reassimilation into the Wikipedia community seems almost complete :)
  • There is little doubt that you possess the technical prowess for this user right.
  • However I have a few lingering concerns ...
    • Back in the day you were an administrator, you frequently made undiscussed changes to protected templates. Sometimes these turned out to be controversial.
    • In the past, you have been criticised for making careless edits or not checking your code properly.
    • The other two problems which are relevant to this request (mass editing without bot authorisation, and making cosmetic changes to wikicode) are covered by editing restrictions and probably do not need to be discussed here.
Despite these slight concerns I am open to the idea of Rich being a template editor (particularly as it is easy to withdraw if any problems occur). But I suggest we wait for others to comment. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 21:19, 21 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see a problem with granting Rich this user right, as long as he is aware that it can be removed should there be any problems with controversial edits or incorrect gauging of consensus, etc. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 01:35, 22 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
