Song |
"Thinking Out Loud" is a song by English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. It was written by Ed Sheeran and Amy Wadge and produced by Sheeran's frequent collaborator Jake Gosling. The song was released as an "instant grat" digital download to the iTunes Store on 18 June 2014, serving as a promotional single from Sheeran's second studio album x (2014).
The song entered the UK Singles Chart at number 26 upon release of the album and spent almost 20 weeks climbing the chart before it finally peaked at number one in early November 2014, giving Sheeran his second UK number-one single. "Thinking Out Loud" impacted Australian radio on 14 August 2014, later being released in America on September 24, and was released as the third single off x, the second track to go to number one in the UK from the album.[3] The song has also reached the top spot in Ireland, New Zealand, Denmark, and the Netherlands, and is also Sheeran's highest charting single in North America to date, peaking at number two on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Canadian Hot 100. "Thinking Out Loud" is the 67th song in history to have spent at least 20 weeks inside the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100.
Background and release
"Thinking Out Loud" is a romantic ballad[4] which Sheeran has described as a "walking down the aisle song" [for a wedding].[5] It was confirmed as the album's third single, and the music video premiered on 7 October 2014.[6]
The song was released as part of the Record Store Day Black Friday 2014 on a 7" vinyl.[7]
Composition
"Thinking Out Loud" is written in the key of D major and is played at a tempo of 79 beats per minute, with Sheeran's vocals ranging from A2 to B4.[8]
Critical reception
"Thinking Out Loud" has received generally positive reviews from music critics. The Washington Post writer Allison Stewart has hailed the song as "a blatant and mercilessly effective bid for 'I'll Be'-style wedding-song immortality."[9] Billboard's Jason Lipshutz commented that Sheeran "pushes this bold stab at romance past its sappiest moments, and ends the album on a likable note".[10]
Chart performance
"Thinking Out Loud" has topped the charts in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Portugal, Denmark, South Africa and the United Kingdom, while reaching the top ten in several other countries including the United States, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Norway, Czech Republic, Belgium, Spain, France, Poland and Austria.
On 29 June 2014, the song entered the UK Singles Chart at number 26 upon release of x.[11] On 2 November 2014, the Official Charts Company announced that "Thinking Out Loud" topped the UK Singles Chart in its 19th week in the UK Top 40, therefore breaking the record for the longest ascent to number one.[12] The single held pole position in the chart for a single week and returned to the top on 7 December 2014, five weeks after it first reached number one. On its return to number one, it also became the first song in UK chart history to peak at number one due to streaming. The song spent 20 weeks in the UK top 10.[13] At the time, it claimed the record for the most streams in a single week with over 1,638,000 streams.[14] and achieved a personal best of 1,850,000 streams in the week ending 21 December 2014. This record has since been broken by several songs.
On the US Billboard Hot 100, "Thinking Out Loud" peaked at number two for eight consecutive weeks, making it Sheeran's second top-ten hit after "Don't" and his highest charting single to date. On 17 December 2014, the song rose from the number 24 to 6 after the performance on the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2014[15] and on 22 January 2015, it rose to its current peak of number two, a position the song held for eight consecutive weeks, becoming one of the few longest-running singles to chart at the runner-up position without peaking at number one.[16] For a week in February 2015, "Thinking Out Loud" outsold Mark Ronson's single "Uptown Funk" on the American digital songs chart.[17] For the week ending February 21, 2015, "Thinking Out Loud" reached number one on the Billboard Adult Pop Songs chart, marking Sheeran's first American chart-topper.[18] For the week ending March 21, 2015, "Thinking Out Loud" held the top position on the Billboard Pop Songs, Adult Pop Songs, and Adult Contemporary charts, becoming the fourth song in history to lead all three adult charts simultaneously.[19] "Thinking Out Loud" is Sheeran's best-selling song in the United States, with 4,090,000 copies sold as of May 2015.[20][21]
Music video
On 8 October 2014, a music video was released for the song. It features Sheeran and ballroom partner Brittany Cherry dancing, with choreography by Nappytabs and training help from Paul Karmiryan. After only sixteen hours, the video had 2 million views on YouTube. It currently has over 560 million views.[22]
Live performances
On 26 October 2014, Sheeran performed the song on third live results show of series 11 of The X Factor.[23] He also performed it on 9 November 2014 in the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards.[24] Sheeran also performed the song as a special guest at The Voice's live finale on 16 December 2014. Furthermore, Sheeran performed the track on the Christmas Special of The Jonathan Ross Show on 20 December 2014. He also performed the song at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards on 8 February 2015 along with John Mayer, Questlove, Adam Blackstone, and Herbie Hancock.[25] Sheeran performed "Thinking Out Loud" on the 13 April 2015 results show of the second series of The X Factor in New Zealand.[26] Sheeran also performed "Thinking Out Loud" at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 2014 [27]
