Clean UP, Green UP is a grand initiative to increase awareness around all Eco-friendly works done towards a ‘Green Goal’ in Uttar Pradesh by state government. It covers every initiative including solar energy, plastic ban, cycle tracks, conservation of forests and animals/birds, etc.[1] Uttar Pradesh is now in the Guinness Book of World Records holder for planting most number of saplings in one day as well.[2] Uttar Pradesh government under a campaign ‘Clean UP, Green UP’ distributed and planted 10,38,578 saplings in 10 locations in a day. The plantation drive was started by Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav on November 7, 2015. The certificate for UP's record setting initiative was awarded to the CM in Saifai district at an official function.[3]

Green Initiatives

TAL Solar Power Plant - Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh

Technical Associates Ltd (TAL) is a company established in Lucknow which has contributed to install a 2 MWp solar photovoltaic plant in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh. This was inaugurated by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav under the Rooftop PV and Small Solar generation Program (RPSSGP) of Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission.[4] This plant is the first megawatt scale, grid connected PV facility power project commissioned in Uttar Pradesh and provides power to the state grid under PPA with Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd. (MVVNL). 17 acres of area is covered by them, the plant has 24290 solar PV modules that work together in synchronization to produce (at peak output) 2 MW of clean power. The power is provided at 11 KV into the distribution grid operated by MVVNL.[5][6]

250 KW solar power plant - Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh

250 KW solar power plant in Kannauj district was inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav and former President Late A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The plant feeds two villages in Tirwa region - Fakirpura and Chanduahaar of Kannauj.[7][8] Two LED bulbs of 5 and 7 watt each were given to every household in the villages. 20 water pumps were also installed.[9][10]

Azure’s 10 MW solar power plant - Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh

Akhilesh Yadav, CM of Uttar Pradesh, on 2 February 2015 inaugurated solar power plant of 10MW of Azure Power company [1]. It is the state’s first large scale solar plant under the UP solar policy. The plant covers across 56 acre of land at Karharakala, in Mahoba district.[11] The plant electrifies 10,000 households.[12]

Essel’s 50 MW solar power project - Jalaun, Uttar Pradesh

50 MW Solar Power Project in Uttar Pradesh has been commissioned by Essel Infraprojects which costs nearly Rs 450 crore. The renewable energy plant is responsible to light 25,000 households.[13] The solar power project was built by the company in 250 acres of land in Jalaun district at Kuhana and Shajahanpur villages. The solar plant generates 85 million units per year and is connected to 132 KV Sarsela-Kalpi substations.[14][15] The state government signed MoU under UP Solar Power Policy in December 2013 for 25 years.[16]

30 MW solar plants - Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh

Three solar power plants of 10 MW each in Lalitpur was inaugurated by UP CM Akhilesh Yadav. One is situated in village Mehroni Khurd and the second in village Amarpur, making it a total of 30MW solar power plant in Lalitpur district of Uttar Pradesh.[17]

18 MW Power Plant - Mathura, Uttar Pradesh

An 18 MW Biomass power plant in Mathura was initiated in colaboration with Usher Eco Power. This is world’s first Silica based power plant which produces electricity from rice husk.[18]

BHEL's 660 MW unit Prayagraj Super Thermal Power Project - Bara, Allahabad

660 MW unit of Prayagraj Super Thermal Power Project at Bara in Uttar Pradesh has been commissioned by Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) which is owned by state[19]. The unit has been established at Prayagraj Super Thermal Power Project (STPP) (3x660 MW) at Bara in Allahabad district of Uttar Pradesh. This thermal plant is the first super critical unit in the state to attain capacity addition on arriving full load. Units which are super critical consume lesser coal, are eco-friendly and are more efficient as well[20].

Lohia Rural Housing Scheme - Solar power pack plant

For housing of BPL families which are left behind, the Uttar Pradesh Government has launched Lohia Housing Scheme[21]. These houses have a solar power pack plant which is 120 watt solar module and 120 ampere hour tubular plate capacity which has been set up by UPNEDA. Each house is provided with 3 watts of 2 luminaries, one luminary of 5 watts, a DC ceiling fan of 25-watt and a mobile charging point and which would work for up to 8 hours per day and has a separate back-up of 2 days. The warranty of plant operation for up to 5 years is done by the supplier firm. Installation of a total of 42181 Solar Power Packs in 27 districts of the state is executed by the UPNEDA with the financial support from the State government. [22]

Solar Street Lighting

Till date 1.25 lakh solar energy based street lighting plants by UPNEDA has been set up under the street lighting program in many districts of Uttar Pradesh.[23]

Solar RO Water

This project was launched with an aim to provide safe and clean drinking water in state primary schools. Under this project, 1 Kw Solar power plants were set up at primary schools across Uttar Pradesh[24]. This setup provides power to 1 D.C. submersible pump, 05 fans and 01 R.O. water purifier which provides 50 liters of purified water per hour has been installed. The estimated setup cost of one plant is Rs. 270,000.[25] Plant is installed with a 05-year warranty and will also be maintained. In the first phase of the project during 2014-15 the scheme has been implemented in 5 districts of UP – Ghaziabad, Kannauj, Gorakhpur, Lucknow and Etawah as a pilot project.[26]

In the session 2015-16 plants are being installed in 10 districts of the state namely Hamirpur, Banda, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Jalaun, Mirzapur, Mahoba, Chitrakoot, Sonbhadra and Auraiya.[27]
