Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Character Images

Hello everyone

OK, I've come across a few instances lately where character images have been changed by someone acting in good faith, however the images that they have changed them to are of a poorer quality.

Myself and @Gungadin: had a brief discussion about this earlier on and one idea was that we use a promotional image in the infobox. If my memory serves me correctly, we did this with Stacey Slater with no problem. I mean a character doesn't have to have a change of image every single time they change their hairstyle etc, as long as they are identifiable. If a character has an image change we can easily enough wait until the BBC release a new promotional image can't we?

Thoughts on this?

Also, in the meantime if anyone comes across an article that has been changed to one of the poorer quality images, I would suggest posting the name of the article here so we can keep everything in one place. An admin can then try their best to get the previous image back--5 albert square (talk) 05:23, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am fully in agreement with everything 5AS proposed.GunGagdinMoan 12:45, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Episode lists in EastEnders

Do they exist? Or, to put it another way, can they exist? I have recently been working on this. Not for much reason really, just a little bit of fun. I never expect it to become an actual page anytime soon. But would it work if it was made into an article, even though there are no others to date? Would it look a little out of place if it was to be published? — RachelRice (talk, contribs) — 00:59, 1 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I am aware that Anemone Projectors does work on this, but you may have to speak to him. — Soaper1234 (talk) 16:23, 27 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi RachelRice, your page looks great, so thanks for doing it. I've been trying to work on episode lists with the intent that they be put in mainspace when there are enough completed pages to do so. I've been offline for a while so didn't start a 2015 page. While I was away, User:Kelvin 101 did updates for me (see User:AnemoneProjectors/List of EastEnders episodes (2014)) (and thanks to Kelvin 101!). I've only just returned, but perhaps when I'm back properly, we could work together. Have a look at User:AnemoneProjectors/List of EastEnders episodes (I've added your 2015 page to my list). –anemoneprojectors– 11:21, 3 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I'd be glad to work with others on the page. I've been a little behind but I shall be updating it this afternoon. Thanks for the feedback. — RachelRice (talk, contribs) — 14:50, 3 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Joining the wikiproject

Where can you join the WikiProject as I have read about it and have shown an interest, after months of doing several articles based on EastEnders actors. This question would possible apply to several wikiprojects, but I am looking to join this one over the rest.

Thanks for all help, Soaper1234 (talk) 16:20, 27 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Why not try WikiProject EastEnders Thanks Kelvin 101 (talk) 15:22, 3 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Vincent Hubbard

I've been working on a page for Vincent Hubbard here. Is it worth making it an article yet? It's more detailed than some of the character pages we've already got. — RachelRice (talk, contribs) — 21:19, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It's a good article, but ideally I like to have about double the "real world" content that you have. Also, I tend to think fictional events should be covered in Wikipedia articles in the same order the viewer sees them, so I'm generally opposed to "backstory" sections, though in Vincent's case, merging his backstory with his appearances might be quite messy. There must be more sources as well - do you ever read the soap magazines? –anemoneprojectors– 15:03, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There's been a fair bit of info in Inside Soap if I recall. There has to be more reception info for him too. Have a look at the Daily Mail site (they do a special EE review article every week), The Free Library/Highbeam and All About Soap. Instead of a "backstory" section in the storylines, you could have a "introduction and characterisation" section in development. I used that format for Phoebe Nicholson. - JuneGloom07 Talk 18:30, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I've saved all the soap mags recently so will have what Vincent stuff there is, and I know there's been a fair amount. I just don't have the time or opportunity to do anything with it at the moment. –anemoneprojectors– 21:26, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I would say it meets notability criteria for fiction. Obviously, building it up to be better sourced and with more real world content would be preferable, but it already fulfils the criteria imo, and it can be improved when it's live. In fact, creating a standalone page would mean that other editors can help improve it, which they won't necessarily do if it's in a sandbox GunGagdinMoan 22:20, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good point. At the moment I'd say it's borderline. A bit like some of the articles we've ummed and ahhed about, and gone back and forth with in the past (Danny Mitchell (EastEnders) springs to mind). But Vincent is here to stay so there will be loads more to come. –anemoneprojectors– 14:45, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback, I'll take all your comments on board. I don't read soap magazines, but hopefully someone who does can contribute. — RachelRice (talk, contribs) — 20:27, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I should be able to at some point in the future, though it'll mean going back through them. But I can't do it at the moment, as I don't have internet access at my home, where my magazines are. –anemoneprojectors– 21:16, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Years of marriage in infoboxes

Hi all. I've just started a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Soap Operas#In-universe dates in infoboxes, and I'd appreciate any input. –anemoneprojectors– 15:03, 12 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright Violation Detection - EranBot Project

A new copy-paste detection bot is now in general use on English Wikipedia. Come check it out at the EranBot reporting page. This bot utilizes the Turnitin software (ithenticate), unlike User:CorenSearchBot that relies on a web search API from Yahoo. It checks individual edits rather than just new articles. Please take 15 seconds to visit the EranBot reporting page and check a few of the flagged concerns. Comments welcome regarding potential improvements. These likely copyright violations can be searched by WikiProject categories. Use "control-f" to jump to your area of interest (if such a copyvio is present).--Lucas559 (talk) 15:55, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Order of surnames in lead

Hi all. The article Jean Slater has got me thinking - I've always been in favour of the name Slater being the first name in the article and then Walters the "also" name in brackets, because Jean has been called Slater for over 10 years and only Walters for less than a single episode, so to put "Jean Walters (also Slater)" seems unbalanced. So I think it would be a good idea to use the WP:COMMONNAME (i.e. the article title) as the first name in the lead, and then other names (including the "current" name if it's not the "common" name) in brackets. For example:

  • Patricia Louise "Pat" Butcher (also Wicks and Evans)
  • Katherine "Kathy" Beale (also Mitchell and Sullivan)
  • Sharon Anne Watts (also Mitchell and Rickman)
  • Dorothy "Dot" Cotton (also Branning)
  • Kathleen "Kat" Slater (also Moon)
  • Stacey Slater (also Branning and Fowler)
  • Kim Fox (also Fox-Hubbard)
  • etc

Any thoughts on this? –anemoneprojectors– 09:40, 18 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I also think we should remove middle names and just have:
  • Pat Butcher (also Wicks and Evans)
  • Kathy Beale (also Mitchell and Sullivan)
  • Sharon Watts (also Mitchell and Rickman)
  • Dot Cotton (also Branning)
  • Kat Slater (also Moon)
  • Stacey Slater (also Branning and Fowler)
  • Kim Fox (also Fox-Hubbard)
There wasa major discussion about this somewhere (that would have affected all fictional characters) but the whole thing was archived before being resolved, so nothing ever happened. anemoneprojectors 09:36, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'd support the removal of middle names for sure, but maybe keep the Dorothy "Dot" Cotton ones. Some fictional characters have been known by both the full and shortened names. I think that discussion was at the infobox talk page. May be we should restart it to get a consensus? - JuneGloom07 Talk 12:56, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I can live with Dorothy and Patricia, etc. I found the discussions (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Soap Operas/Archive 11#Middle names, maiden names, married names, birth names, etc... for the original, Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)/Archive 126#RfC: In-universe name details of fictional characters, in article leads for the RFC). Although the originaltor of the discussion was indef blocked, I think he had a point about middle names. (The other thing I seem to have wanted to be removed was marriage/stepfamily years in the infobox, which I'd still be happy to see go.) anemoneprojectors 15:54, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, well done. I wouldn't mind losing the years for stepfamiles, but I think marriage years might be more tricky. - JuneGloom07 Talk 16:46, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Characters needing independent articles

My opinion is that the following current characters should have independent articles, or at least drafts started so that they can become independent articles in the future:

I may have missed or forgotten some. I also think that Buster Briggs, Louise Mitchell and Carmel Kazemi could be worked on but may not be ready yet, though we would see what sources can be found. I already have drafts for Gavin and Paul in my userspace, but they still require some work to be completed (even though Gavin's looks good, it's actually nowhere near ready and I want it ready before it is moved), and I've started one for Buster but not done any work on it. Is anyone a) already working on these or b) willing to work on or collaborate on them? If so, I suggest creating drafts in the draftspace, such as Draft:Les Coker and working on them there, starting with the information that already exists in the list entries and then expanding and improving them before having them moved to mainspace. What I don't want to see is a cut and paste from a list to a new article without any work being done and without any attribution being taken into consideration (as has recently happened with Lee Carter). AnemoneProjectors 15:58, 27 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've added links to existing drafts - please add yours if you started any
What about Yvonne Cotton and Aleks Shirvos? Yes they've departed but they did have notable storylines?188.28.23.44 (talk) 12:40, 11 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be happy for departed characters to be worked on to see if they are worthy of separate articles. For example, I also have drafts for Joey Branning, Kirsty Branning and Ayesha Rana. anemoneprojectors 17:53, 14 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
I was wondering if I could maybe do Louise Mitchell and probably Bex Fowler if it's OK with you? And if it is OK for me to do Bex, would I go by Rebecca Fowler or Bex Fowler? Personally, I would go by Rebecca.
Thanks,
Grangehilllover (talk) 17:19, 30 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Add links here when you start so others can help out if they want. I would go with Rebecca for the title for now, as the list entry uses that name and it's the location of the main redirect. I've added her to the above list. anemoneprojectors 07:14, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
I've started the drafts and added the links.
Thanks,
Grangehilllover (talk) 08:54, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Don't forget to leave an edit summary saying you've copied text from another page (assuming that's what you did and didn't start from scratch), a bit like my first edit summary here because attribution is essential on Wikipedia. anemoneprojectors 10:10, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

An IP (188.30.109.24) added Tracey, Yvonne Cotton and Sylvie Carter to the list but I removed them as a bot signed them making it look like either the IP had made my comment or I had listed those three. I'm not convinced any of them need an article or could ever get one beyond what they already have in the list entries, with the possible exception of Yvonne if there are more sources to find. Does anyone have any further thoughts? anemoneprojectors 12:36, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think there has always been potential in a Tracey article, it is just finding the right real world information. Soaper1234 (talk) 15:18, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oh actually Tracey has more information in her list entry than I thought. If there was any more, I might support a separate article. But I don't think that would need working on in a draft. anemoneprojectors 21:35, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Separate Articles

Sort of a follow on from above, I just need to get up to scratch as I have not been here for a few years! What do we not trust as a source? I clearly remember The Sun but not any others. I am currently working on a draft for Pam Coker as there is a lot of potential with her blackmailing and Les's cross dressing. Hope everyone is all good!
