Request on 11:43:48, 25 June 2017 for assistance on AfC submission by Rachitasinha28

I wanted to create an article on this person as I have seen their work having big impact on the society, or rather children. This is my first attempt in publishing something on wikipedia and I genuinely want to contribute something by writing/initiating this article. I have gathered information about this person from various articles published in newspapers and have picked up words from them and mentioned the source as well. I may not be accepted as a full contributor, but can I start this article and mention some important links that i have information about. Please assist me in getting this through as I am new to it.

thank you

Request on 03:45:59, 26 June 2017 for assistance on AfC submission by Csandi

Existing article summary has only 2 sentences, one of which is about reputed crossdressing. Edward Hyde is more than a crossdresser. How do I add a more comprehensive, fact-based summary? The body of the existing article has only two subsections: "Career" and "Reputation". "Career" describes Cornbury's entire life in 5 short paragraphs. One paragraph summarizes his entire administration as Governor of New York, mentioning only his bad reputation without references. The larger "Reputation" section lists only the reasons for his bad reputation.

My opinion is that the current article needs to be deleted because it's incomplete, non-factual, unreferenced, and defamatory. The current article should be replaced with an article that resolves these problems, which I have submitted (see sandbox).

Csandi (talk) 03:45, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I think this is about Edward Hyde, 3rd Earl of Clarendon. Maproom (talk) 07:02, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Csandi: please point out which part of the article is defamatory and we can remove it. DrStrauss talk 10:11, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

04:07:26, 26 June 2017 review of submission by MissHazelJade

I submitted an article Draft:Queer (musical); however, it It was recently reviewed and unfortunately was declined because it did not appear to be written in the formal tone expected of an encyclopedia article. I would greatly appreciate the assistance of KGirlTrucker81 or any other contributor in helping to sculpt the article in a more neutral point of view. Thank you in advance. MissHazelJade (talk) 04:07, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MissHazelJade. The draft's problems go deeper than tone. It needs multiple, in-depth, independent, reliable sources to establish the notability of the topic. What the draft cites are the show's website (not-independent), a press release (not-independent), and another show's website (for a sentence that is off-topic and probably doesn't belong in the draft at all).
To get a feeling for appropriate tone (and the sort of sources to look for), study some of Wikipedia's best writing about musicals: Carousel, Pipe Dream, and A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant. --Worldbruce (talk) 13:24, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

16:59:01, 26 June 2017 review of submission by RKK4409

I am new to writing wiki page and I don't see a place to upload a digital photograph to go on the page. How do I do add a photo? Thank you!

RKK4409 (talk) 16:59, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RKK4409 The presence or absence of photos will have no effect on whether or not the draft is accepted, so I strongly advise you to focus on referencing and postpone photos until much later.
With regard to a picture of the artist, unless you took the photo (and thus hold the copyright), it probably can't be used in the draft. With regard to pictures of his art, they may not be used in the draft because the artist holds the copyright. The rules change if and when the draft becomes an article. At that point it may be possible to add an image of the artist and/or their art under the fair use exemption, but numerous conditions must be met. Adding an image is a two step process: first upload it, then use it in on a page.
Go to Commons:First steps and carefully step through the tutorial. When you get to "First steps/Uploading files", don't dive in too hastily. First follow the link on that page to learn about the different licensing options. Other useful advance reading includes Wikipedia:File names and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Images, which will prepare you to answer important questions the upload wizard will ask you. If after that you have any questions or doubts, there is a dedicated help desk for image uploading.
Once you've uploaded an image, the picture tutorial can guide you through how to use it in an article. --Worldbruce (talk) 00:44, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello: I am working on my FIRST Wikipedia article...so I am new to this world (although not to writing). Is it possible for me to insert some pictures that I have permission to display? Or am I not eligible yet?...this seems to improve the article. --Lak2017

Lak2017 (talk) 19:49, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lak2017. Welcome to Wikipedia! Writing a new article is one of the most challenging things an editor can do here.
The draft is well researched and well written, exhibiting just the sort of skills Wikipedia needs in editors, but the topic may not be suitable for the encyclopedia. To clear Wikipedia's bar of notability, an organization is expected to have received significant coverage by international or national, or at least regional, media (see WP:AUD). The sources cited in the draft all appear to be local. If The Globe and Mail, say, or perhaps a national literary magazine, has profiled the group, then it would qualify for inclusion. If it can't be included in Wikipedia, you could explore alternative outlets that welcome content of local interest.
With regard to your specific question, unless you took the photographs yourself (and thus hold the copyright), using them on Wikipedia can be difficult or impossible. Fundamentally, adding a photo is a two step process: first upload it, then use it in on a page.

Please can you help me alter my citations to the required format. I thought they were OK but I must be misunderstanding what is required. Thank you so much. --StillEvolving (talk) 20:43, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

StillEvolving (talk) 20:43, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@StillEvolving: There's nothing wrong with the format of your references- I think that the problem is that in the 'background' section of your article, several claims remain not backed up by references e.g. where he completed his education etc. This is particularly of importance as the article is a biography of a living person and we try to ensure that claims are backed up to avoid potential libel etc. so we are stricter on these types of articles. Congratulations on what you've written so far :) jcc (tea and biscuits) 22:06, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

22:31:43, 26 June 2017 review of submission by 217.231.217.107

Hi, I just tried to write an article about Dirk van den Boom, a German science fiction author. He recently received one of the most prestigious awards for German science fiction (admitted there aren't that many awards) and I thought he should have an article. However, apparently I'm German and my language might need some improvement. Furthermore, it has been a while since I edited Wikipedia and I have no idea how to link to the German article. Would be great if someone could check the article.

217.231.217.107 (talk) 22:31, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The Deutscher Science Fiction Preis is significant, at least within the German-speaking science fiction community, but it's difficult for me to judge whether it is well-known enough to satisfy the WP:ANYBIO notability criteria. The draft cites two university bio pages and two prize-awarding organizations, all of which are reliable, but have an interest in making the people they profile look good. The draft's other two sources look like fan sites that may not be reliable sources. Can you cite any reviews of his work or coverage of his winning the prize in more mainstream newspapers and magazines? Does he have an entry in Kürschners Deutscher Literatur-Kalender 2016.2017? That might be another way to show that he meets WP:ANYBIO. You may be able to get more help at Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Arts and entertainment. --Worldbruce (talk) 02:58, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

01:39:37, 27 June 2017 review of submission by Adasteel

How to show the subject's notability? Thank you in advance. Adasteel (talk) 01:39, 27 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Adasteel: In a nutshell, an organization is generally considered notable if it has been the subject of significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources (e.g. media reports on the company- even if they are in another language). Trivial or incidental coverage of a subject by secondary sources is not sufficient to establish notability. This guide- WP:NCOMPANY might help you. jcc (tea and biscuits) 22:26, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

03:54, 28 June 2017 review of submission by Nmichgcp

Hello, Can someone please advise me where I am failing to meet the requirements to successful submit this page. I've tried to adhere to the guidelines but I've been knocked back twice now, pointing out the specific areas/lines where it is incorrect would be really helpful. Draft:Chris_Gibson_(Reseacher)

Nmichgcp (talk) 03:54, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nmichgcp. I'm not sure what your last reviewer was looking for, you would have to ask them for clarification. Some things that won't necessarily prevent acceptance, but need to be fixed:
  • Avoid overusing capital letters, see MOS:CAPS. He's not a "Professor of Human Geography ... and the inaugural Director", he's a professor of human geography and the inaugural director.
  • External links are not allowed within the body of the article, see WP:EL. Global Challenges Program, for example, should not appear in running text. If that page proves the statement (that he's the director) it may be turned into a reference.
  • Place inline citations immediately after punctuation, not before.
  • Section headings should be sentence case.
  • Remove the list of research grants unless there's something to say about them based on independent sources.
  • Don't link his books to the publisher's website unless the full text is available there for free. Instead use {{cite book}} or {{ISBN}} templates to link the ISBN.
  • Remove the list of journal articles. Wikipedia normally lists only an academic's books.
  • State whatever it is that he's notable for in the first or second sentence of the lede, see WP:PROF.
Review the entire draft with Wikipedia:Writing better articles in mind. --Worldbruce (talk) 04:43, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I tried to publish article about DFRobot, however has been declined three times. I would like to know specific information about which reference and phrase I should remove, and where I should improve etc. Thank you for your help.

Christy.kwon (talk) 03:56, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Christy.kwon, so first off we can remove the LinkedIn reference because it adds nothing to show notability and the same with the Kickstarter reference. We don't use Wikipedia as a reference to itself so that one can be cut out. It may not just be about adding references, more may be needed. DrStrauss talk 10:06, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You are right. Yes they are many articles about maglev. Please see the search result(https://search.yahoo.com/yhs/search;_ylt=A0LEVvHZA1RZujUAWucnnIlQ;_ylu=X3oDMTEzajVvczlrBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNwYWdpbmF0aW9u?p=maglev+wikipedia&ei=UTF-8&hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-001&fr=yhs-mozilla-001&b=11&pz=10&bct=0&pstart=3 as this Wikipedia search page shows it. There is very few info of the Indutrack. One sentence after a few word of the components: General Atomics is developing Inductrack technology in cooperation with multiple research partners. This article gives an in-dept info. and analysis about the reality of building one. And there is no articles about the train for many tasks being levitated by permanent magnet, a newly developed technology. The sixteen pages of the article provides detailed information of how the technology was developed, what were the design considerations, how it was built, operated and how it is compared to existing levitation and propulsion technology. As far as I have checked all the articles of Maglev in the last 20 years , about this new system there are none. To edit any of the articles with the necessary details (about 16 pages) would totally altered the existing articles since non of them have any related topics more than a sentence, let alone the illustrations/pictures.

I respectfully think that 18 years of first hand experience may be worth to have an article of this technology in the Wikipedia. There are many examples in this magnificent lexicon having multiple articles about the same subject giving the readers a wider horizon.

Respectfully KehrerK

Request on 07:17:30, 29 June 2017 for assistance on AfC submission by Passionfruitvine

Hi Wikipedia, I have worked on the Draft of Joyce Stevens AM and do not know what to do next to get the Draft accepted. I have overcome the notability issue now the reviewer says the tone is wrong and it reads like an advertisement. I thought about deleting the two paragraphs outlining the conclusions about women and work immediately above 'Personal life, family and interests' -would this be a good idea? Also I thought I could delete the paragraph in the introduction that outlines her achievements. Could you help me please?

15:45:00, 29 June 2017 review of submission by Brienanni

I am confused by the rejection "improperly sourced". I added links to a variety of news articles, some in Chinese, some in Dutch, but Google translate can easily provide the English version. The key historical facts seem beyond doubt. There is a monument for this individual, so also his noteworthiness seems beyond doubt. Hopefully I can receive an indication what is missing.

Brienanni (talk) 15:45, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Brienanni. Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia. The reviewer who declined your submission didn't say that the sourcing was improper -- they said it was inadequate. And I see what they meant -- except for its first three sentences, the entire Biography section is unsourced. I have no doubt that this can be corrected with the sourcing you already have in the article and, after you've done so, feel free to re-submit and drop a note on my Talk page. By the way, the first reference directs the reader to a web page that doesn't exist. That actually is improper and you'll need to replace that non-existent source with something else that supports the material. I hope this response has been helpful. Valerievalpal (talk) 20:02, 29 June 2017 (UTC)I am trying to add information to Bobby Osborne Wikipedia page. I have included information that I have found and submitted it in Sandbox for review. I'm very new at this process and learning. Is that the place to ask for submission and correction? I certainly do not want to be accused of copyright violations. I am simply getting my information from printed sources and sharing them.Valerievalpal (talk) 20:02, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Valerievalpal (talk) 20:02, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Valerie. Thank you for your interest in Wikipedia. Are we talking about the Bobby Osborne who already has a Wikipedia article? If so, you can open up a discussion with the editors of that page by posting your proposals at Talk:Bobby Osborne. On a more general note, if by "simply sharing" information you mean that you're copying it verbatim from another source ... , that's exactly what "copyright violation" means. All information should be stated in your own words and cited to the reference that you are using. If possible, you can add a link to that reference material, allowing the readers to read for themselves the original source of the information. For more detail on this, see WP:Verifiability and WP:Referencing for beginners. I hope this response has been helpful. NewYorkActuary (talk) 20:18, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Valerievalpal. The copyright information template I added to your talk page, after redacting your post at the talk and your sandbox (and their page histories) as copyright violations from allmusic, has a lot of information in it—maybe too much. Based upon your post above, and your edits to the Teahouse, I think, though I am not sure, that you have a confusion about using sources versus copying their words.

If so, this is what you should understand:

  • Reliable sources are cited to show where the information exists that verifies your additions, but you don't copy what they say. As we often tell people: "You may use external websites or other writings as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words." You should also understand that copyright infringement is not avoided by surface modification of existing content, e.g., changing a word here and a word there, while substantially retaining the wording, structure and creative expression in the original material. See Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing.

In sum, read sources; digest the meaning; write entirely in your own words; cite the source as verifying the information. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 00:06, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

11:27:52, 30 June 2017 review of submission by Yuval Filmus

My submission, about a mathematical topic, got rejected since it has no explanation for the average reader. Other articles about mathematical topics similarly contain no explanations for the average reader. My motivation for contributing further articles to Wikipedia in the future is naturally rather minimal at the moment. I was responding to a community call (https://thmatters.wordpress.com/2017/05/02/tcs-wikipedia-project/), but your side has to cooperate as well.

13:16:27, 30 June 2017 review of submission by Dmurray06

I work for Pioneer State Mutual Insurance Company, therefore we own the copyright material on the company's website (www.psmic.com/history.aspx). I realize this creates a COI, but I took special care to make sure the article met the guidelines and requirements of Wikipedia. Is there preferred method for a company to submit an article to Wikipedia? I was under the impression that submitting it in the Editing Wizard, in the specified tone was sufficient. Any guidance you can provide is appreciated Dmurray06 (talk) 13:16, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Dmurray06: COI editors are advised to create drafts as opposed to going straight into the mainspace. DrStrauss talk 13:42, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Dmurray06: See WP:BFAQ#COMPANY. Companies are strongly advised not to submit articles at all. It's almost always a huge waste of time for the company and for Wikipedia volunteers. If a company is foolish enough to think that an article about them would be a good thing (is unfamiliar with the law of unintended consequences), then the preferred way to get an article is to ask at Wikipedia:Requested articles. Companies that ignore that advice too, should, as DrStrauss says, submit their proposed article as a draft.
So why is your draft being deleted? The company may be able to license the text on their website so that it could be published here. However, there are steps that must be taken to verify that license before you do. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
Even if the company changes the copyright notices on their web page to a compatible license, it likely will be impossible to use the text here. {{Lafc|username=Dmurray06|ts=16:30:22, 30 June 2017|page= @WorldBruce I'm sorry I thought I was creating a draft using Article Wizard. I was trying to figure out the proper way to disclose my COI.
