Bitcoin.com is a company that provides Bitcoin Core and Bitcoin Cash services, such as purchasing and selling these cryptocurrencies, and choosing a wallet for both.[3] The associated website aims to be a Bitcoin-related web portal. Accordingly it features a range of services such as news, various tools, widgets and charts as well as a store and online games casino.

Organization

Bitcoin.com is registered in Saint Kitts and Nevis under the organization Saint Bitts LLC.[4], and the head office is in Tokyo, Japan.[5] Its CEO is Roger Ver.[6] Roger Ver gained control of the Bitcoin.com domain in April 2014 where he leased it to Blockchain.info, and then later to OKCoin.[7] In May 2015 OKCoin announced that the company will no longer be managing the domain Bitcoin.com, due to a dispute with the domain owner, Roger Ver.[8]

In June 2015, Ver re-launched Bitcoin.com dedicating it to helping and grow the Bitcoin network.[5] In November 2017, the Bitcoin.com wallet was ranked third on Google for that search term and was in the top five search results at the Google Play store.[9] That month Bitcoin.com announced that its software had created 500,000 wallets.[10]

Bitcoin Wallet

The Bitcoin.com wallet was launched in August 2017 so users can safely store and use Bitcoin.[11]

In November 2017, the wallet updated to default to Bitcoin Cash. When users download the app, it will automatically create both Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Core wallets. The Bitcoin Cash wallet appears first on the list as the default option.[12]

In February 2018, it was announced that the wallet integrated with ShapeShift using their API to allow for multi-currency conversions within the wallet between Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Bitcoin Core (BTC).[13]

In March 2018, the Bitcoin.com wallet announced that 2 million Bitcoin wallets have been downloaded since it was released.[14] Later in March at a Bitcoin conference, Bitcoin.com CEO Roger Ver announced that the wallet will now not only default to Bitcoin Cash as the default wallet, but will have the Bitcoin Core wallet section listed within the 'advanced settings' section for users to switch on only if they want to use it.[15]

Bitcoin Trading

In 2016, Bitcoin.com secured 1% of the global hashrate of bitcoins.[16] A review by Coinvigilance regarded purchasing at Bitcoin.com as "definitely expensive", with a total 7.5% fee on every bitcoin purchase as of November 2017.[17] It also criticized their website of being crafted to falsely convince visitors that Bitcoin Cash (BCH), which does not have SegWit, would be the same as bitcoin (BTC), and making it an extremely demanding task for newcomers to make sure they are buying BTC and not BCH.[17]

Bitcoin Mining

Bitcoin.com started mining with its own pool and mined its first block, 430757, on September 21, 2016.[18] Cloud mining contracts were added in May, 2017.[19] The Bitcoin.com pool and cloud mining system was developed by Emil Oldenburg and Shaun Chong.[20]
