March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback?

I notice that you don't have the rollbacker right in your given list of user groups. If you like, I could grant you access to the rollback right so you can gain access to the tool. Drop me a line if you are interested, otherwise have a good evening (or morning as the case may be). TomStar81 (Talk) 02:10, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Zawed, you have been pinged more than once to return to this nomination to continue your review, but you have not done so. Please resume it soon. If you don't think you'll be able to get back, then please let me know; I can put it back into the nominations pool to find a new reviewer, something that will be easier now, while the GA Cup is still running, than later—it would be the third oldest unreviewed nomination and thus eligible for top bonus points to any reviewer who took it on. Thank you. BlueMoonset (talk) 17:27, 12 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@BlueMoonset: Real world life has kept me particularly busy for the last few weeks but I will be looking at this shortly. Cheers. Zawed (talk) 09:10, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Survey Invite

I'm working on a study of political motivations and how they effect editing. I'd like to ask you to take a survey. The survey should take 5 minutes. Your survey responses will be kept private. Our project is documented at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikipedia_%2B_Politics.

Survey Link: http://uchicago.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_80J3UDCpLnKyWTH?Q_DL=1R1zIzg92FHco4d_80J3UDCpLnKyWTH_MLRP_5inMlObzwaPN3aR&Q_CHL=gl

I am asking you to participate in this study because you are a frequent editor of pages on Wikipedia that are of political interest. We would like to learn about your experiences in dealing with editors of different political orientations.

Sincere thanks for your help! Porteclefs (talk) 21:19, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

HMS Lion pictures

Hi Zawed: I moved the pictures from HMS Lion (1794) to HMS Lion (1777). The 1794 Lion was a tiny, single-masted Dutch hoy; the 1777 Lion was a 64-gun, three-masted, three-decked ship of the line. Nice pictures, just wrong location, so I moved them to the correct location. Regards, Acad Ronin (talk) 13:16, 16 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I was going off the image file information when adding to the article, but now looking at the infobox, it is pretty clear that information is incorrect. Cheers. Zawed (talk) 07:10, 17 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the info was correct in that the picture was of Lion (1777), in 1794. Generally, the RN made a point of not having two vessels with the same name. This was one of the exceptions. Again, great find on the pictures; they tart up the correct article nicely. Cheers, Acad Ronin (talk) 00:02, 18 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Zawed. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

Param Vir Chakra c/e

Hi Zawed, request a quick copyedit to the history section of Param Vir Chakra. Thanks in advance. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 09:07, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Krishna Chaitanya Velaga, I have done a bit of editing just now and will do some more over the next few days. One thing to check, please confirm that the VC was actually awarded to civilians under the command of the British Indian Army (as per the last sentence of the 1st paragraph of the History section). Cheers, Zawed (talk) 09:59, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 10:46, 2 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Krishna, I have finished my CE, but please check my changes to make sure that they are supported by the references and are accurate. There is one paragraph, I wasn't able to properly CE; the one beginning "Post-independence,...", which is a little confusing. It states that the British honours and awards system in India informally came to an end but then later says India still has the option of these. Depending on what the actual situation is, I would rephrase to:

"Post-independence, although India had the option of retaining the existing British honours and awards system for recognising actions of gallantry, it chose not to do so. A short time later, Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru decided to give gallantry awards for the ongoing conflict in Jammu and Kashmir. Accordingly, new gallantry awards specific to military personnel of India were to be instituted."

Hope that helps. Cheers, Zawed (talk) 01:25, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Gday Zawed. I added a book to the article that had been used for a number of inline citations but seemed to be missing from the bibliography - please see here for my edit [1]. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited New Zealand and Australian Division, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Australian Imperial Force (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Co-option?

G'day Zawed, with Anotherclown's retirement, the coord team could do with another pair of hands. How would you feel about being co-opted for the rest of the tranche term? Let me know? Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 06:16, 5 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Peacemaker67: Hey PM, I've been managing my time a little better lately compared to last year when I opted to not stand again as a coord, so happy to be co-opted in to help out the team. Cheers, Zawed (talk) 07:50, 5 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Travis

G'day, Zawed, nice work with Richard Travis. When/if you come to nom for A-class, I won't be able to review because of my earlier work on the article: [2]. Probably best to list me as a co-nom, and I will help out where I can. Anyway, thanks for your efforts with the NZ VC bios. Cheers, AustralianRupert (talk) 09:03, 21 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@AustralianRupert: thanks AR. I hadn't thought to list you as a co-nom for A-Class, will do so when I get to that stage. Cheers, Zawed (talk) 04:14, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Page numbers of Mitcham's 'German Order of Battle

Hello, Could you provide the page numbers for the entry for the 376th Infantry Division in Mitcham's German Order of Battle, Volume Two? I am asking this because you created a number of German divisional articles based on the information from the book. Kges1901 (talk) 20:26, 7 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Les bon assessors

The Teamwork Barnstar
It is with great pleasure that I award this barnstar jointly and severally to auntieruth, AustralianRupert, Kees08, Nick-D, Peacemaker67 and Zawed. It has been earned partly for helping to nurse Razing of Friesoythe through ACR. I was awed and humbled by the amount of attention, effort, detail and support the six assessors brought to the task. But mostly it has been earned by your doing the same thing for many, many other articles week after week, month after month. Assessors sans peur et sans reproche.
