Mahesh Babu in Spyder

Mahesh Babu (born Mahesh Ghattamaneni) is an Indian film actor known for his work in Telugu cinema. Born to actor Krishna in the Ghattamaneni family, Mahesh Babu faced the camera at the age of four as a child artist in 1979's Needa directed by Dasari Narayana Rao.[1] His first leading role was in the film Rajakumarudu, which was released in August 1999.[2] In 2001 he starred in Murari a Telugu supernatural thriller film. In 2002 he starred in Takkari Donga. In 2003 he starred in the movie Nijam. He played a young Kabaddi player in the 2003 film Okkadu. His film Okkadu remade in Hindi as Tevar.

In 2006 he starred in Pokiri, premiered at the 7th IIFA Awards held in Dubai. The film was subsequently remade into Tamil, Hindi and Kannada. The film was also one of the fourteen southern Indian films to be screened at the International Indian Film Academy Awards Film festival in 2006. His film Pokiri was declared as an Industry Hit at the box office.According to Sify, Pokiri took an "extraordinary" opening across the globe and was able to cash in on the four-day weekend holiday.[3] Pokiri was released in a single screen, the Jayaprada theatre in Chennai, where 98.5% of seats were sold putting it in second place in the city's box office chart, which Sify called an "awesome" feat.[4] The film completed a fifty-day run on 17 June 2006, in nearly 300 centres.By July 2006, the film had earned approximately 350—400 million and become the highest grossing Telugu film of all time. The film earned 120 million in the Nizam region alone, breaking the previous record set in the region by Indra (2002) and earned approximately 25 million at the United States box office.[5]

The film completed a 100-day run in 200 centres and a 175-day run in 63 centres.[6] The film completed a 200-day run in 15 centres, and a 365-day run at a theatre in Kurnool, becoming the first Telugu film to do so in the last two and a half decades.[7] The film was screened in Bhagiratha theatre, Kurnool for 500 days at the rate of four shows per day and collected a share of 6 million.[6] In its lifetime, Pokiri grossed 660 million and collected a distributor share of 420 million at the global box office.[8][9] It held that position until 2009 when Magadheera pushed it to second place after its nine-day run.[10] In 2010, he starred in the film Khaleja.[11] His performance in Khaleja was critically praised as one of his best performances. In 2011, he starred in Dookudu, which had the largest worldwide opening for a Telugu film. The film collected a share of 66 crores at the boxoffice.[12]

In 2012, he starred in the film Businessman. The film collected a share of 44 crores at the box office.[13]Businessman opened to 85% occupancy in both single screens and multiplexes at AP/Nizam box office on its first day.[14] It grossed approximately 187.35 million and collected a share of 137.8 million at the global box office on its first day creating an all-time record in terms of opening day collections.[15] The film collected a distributor share of 120 million in AP/Nizam box office, 10 million in Karnataka, 7.5 million together in Tamil Nadu, Orissa and North India respectively[15] and 0.3 million together in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Japan on its first day.[15] The film collected approximately 418.35 million by the end of its first week at the global box office and was declared a blockbuster.[16] The film completed a 50-day run in 350 centres on 3 March 2012,[17] and a 100-day run in undisclosed number of centres on 21 April 2012.[18]

In 2013, he starred in the multistarrer film Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu. The film collected 51 crores at the box office.[19] In 2014, he starred in the psychological thriller, 1: Nenokkadine. The film was the highest rated thrillers for an Indian film in Internet Movie Database. It won three awards out of eight nominations at the 4th South Indian International Movie Awards and two awards at the 11th CineMAA Awards ceremony.[20] A. S. Sashidhar of The Times of India wrote, "The first half of 1: Nenokkadine is good and will keep you wanting for more. The story has a few interesting twists and turns, in the second half too to keep the audience glued to the screen", and Sukumar "should be commended for superb attempt in choosing to make a film that has not been explored in Telugu movies".[21] Shekhar of Oneindia called the film a "brilliant psychological thriller": "The first half of 1: Nenokkadine is excellent and will impress all classes of audience. A few sentimental scenes slow down the pace of narration in the second half. But the superb climax that lasts for 15 minutes will compensate it. The viewers will surely walk out of theatre with contented hearts".[22]

Nenokkadine earned a distributor share of 84 million at the AP-Nizam box office on its first day,[23] and 124 million over its opening weekend. Its United States opening box office total was $947,000 (58.2 million), which trade analyst Taran Adarsh called a "glorious start"[24] and "one of the best openings ever by an Indian film".[25] 1: Nenokkadine passed the $1 million mark in three days, the seventh Telugu film (and Mahesh's third, after Dookudu and Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu) to earn a million dollars.[26] On its fourth and fifth days the film earned a share of 32.5 million at the AP-Nizam box office, for a five-day total share of about 150 million.[27] By the end of 1: Nenokkadine's first week it had earned a distributor share of 181 million at the AP-Nizam box office, 21 million in Karnataka and 9 million in the rest of India. The film's first-week global box-office total was 252 million.[28] In ten days 1: Nenokkadine grossed over $1.27 million in the United States, the fourth-highest-grossing Telugu film in that country.[29] He then starred in Aagadu. Aagadu debuted with a positive response at the box office by crossing the US$1 million mark in two days including its paid previews at the United States box office.[30] It collected 180.2 million in two days, which according to Indo-Asian News Service, was Mahesh's career best opener.[31]

In 2015 his film Srimanthudu collected a gross of 200 crores in its lifetime and declared as non bahubali industry hit.[32] In 2016 his film Brahmotsavam was declared a flop at the box office.[33] The film was released on over 200 screens in the United States, where it collected an estimated US$1.15 million after ten days.[34] In 2017 his next film Spyder, which gained mixed reviews from critics and managed to gross ₹150 crores considered as an average.[35] His film Bharat Ane Nenu collected 66 crores in its first day and collected 1.66 crore and beats Baahubali 2: The Conclusion becomes highest grosser of all time in Chennai .It collected 125 crores in its second day and becomes fastest 100 crores club after bahubali series. Mahesh Babu makes place for his wax statue at Madame Tussauds.[37]

Mahesh Babu, along with Narayandas Narang of Asian Group, officially inaugurated the seven-screen superplex at Gachibowli on Sunday. AMB Cinemas, equipped with state-of-the-art technology and décor, chose Rajinikanth’s recently released 2.0 for its first show. Mahesh Babu was apparently awaiting the release of the big-budget movie to take the plunge into the film distribution business.[38].

After venturing into the multiplex business, Superstar Mahesh Babu is expanding and is all set to enter into production too. The actor is all set to produce a web series and is also planning to produce small films with other actors. “Mahesh Babu is planning big in the coming days as he has signed with a top digital company for the web series and is also planning to produce small films in his own production house,” says a source.[39].
