Ellesmere station
Ellesmere is a station on the Scarborough Rapid Transit line of the subway/RT system of Toronto, Canada. It is located at 1025 Ellesmere Road, between Kennedy Road and Midland Avenue. It was opened in 1985.
North of this station, the line turns 90° east, dipping briefly into tunnel to cross under the railway tracks, then rising to an elevated structure for the remainder of its route.
Ellesmere is the least-used station on the entire TTC network. On average, only 1,960 passengers boarded trains here each day in 2005-2006. [1] Part of the reason for this is the long walks involved from the station exit to the nearst bus stop.
Light rapid transit extension and replacement
The TTC is hoping of a replacement of the SRT for light rail transit, with an extension to Sheppard East in Malvern. Because of the low cost of LRT, the Bloor-Danforth subway extension, which would not have passed Ellesmere, from Kennedy to Sheppard East got turned down. This extension will be considered later, though, as the TTC has bigger priorites to deal with: The potential Sheppard line extension from Don Mills to Scarborough Centre and the Spadina line extension from Downsview to Steeles West, and eventually, Vaughan Corporate Centre.
