"Jewish"
[edit]Regarding "Zafiro": the family name Shapiro is indeed Jewish, but does this automatically mean that this cartoonist should be categorized as Jewish? To me, this seems especially sensitive matter because of the current "anti-islamic" cartoon affair--JanDeFietser (talk) 14:09, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
He IS Jewish. And so am I - I'm his sister. Have a look at all of his cartoons. He speaks out about all injustice. Yvonne Shapiro. — Preceding unsigned comment added by YShapiro (talk • contribs) 20:56, 17 September 2011 (UTC)
Absolute construction
[edit]My fault - I made a minor edit without having logged in or discussed my reason for making it. I see the edit was undone.
To make matters worse, I then contributed to this talk page still without logging on in Firefox, though I was logged on in Safari. Sorry! Here I am as Caligo.
What I should have written as Caligo is as follows
A syntactical error that seems to me to appear with increasing frequency is a form of absolute construction.
An example:
Having studied at Oxford as an undergraduate and Harvard University for his PhD, Bayley worked at MIT, Columbia University, and Texas A&M University. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hagan_Bayley)
By extension, are we to assume that everybody who has studied at Oxford as an undergrad and been granted a Harvard doctorate necessarily goes on to work at MIT etc?
Clearly not, yet that is what the construction indicates.
The dangling participle need not be expressed:
Born in Cape Town to Gershon and Gaby Shapiro, Jonathan studied architecture at the University of Cape Town ... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonathan_Shapiro) - the 'Having been (born)' being understood.
The error is easily corrected. For instance, 'After studying at Oxford as an undergraduate and Harvard University for his PhD, Baylley worked at MIT, Columbia University, and Texas A&M University.
Because there is no clear link between parentage and university study, the second example is better split into the two separate thoughts: Jonathan was born in Cape Town to Gershon and Gaby Shapiro. He studied architecture at the University of Cape Town.
To me, the error seems to be attributable to laziness. The author is perhaps more interested in the flow of words rather than in clarity.
Zuma dropped all charges
[edit]Someone might write a section on the current events then president Jacob Zuma finally withdrew all claims against Zapiro: http://mg.co.za/article/2012-10-28-zuma-avoids-zapiro-court-showdown-over-cartoon. I'd do if I was a native speaker. ^^ 77.189.210.133 (talk) 20:19, 29 October 2012 (UTC)
