On 13 April 2024, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), in coordination with the Yemeni Houthi militant group,[1] launched an attack on Israel codenamed Operation Truthful Promise (Persian: وعده صادق, romanizedva'de-ye sadeq)[7] using drones, cruise and ballistic missiles.[5] The attacks are launched in response to the Israeli bombing of the Iranian embassy in Damascus on 1 April[8]. . This is the first direct military confrontation between the two countries since the beginning of the Iran–Israel conflict.

Background

On 7 October 2023, Hamas, a militant organization with support from Iran and Qatar, carried out an attack in southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 individuals.[9][10] Israel responded by launching the ongoing Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 33,000 people so far, and Iran has accused Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians of Gaza.[11][12]

After 7 October, the Iranian-backed proxy Hezbollah in Lebanon began attacking northern Israel.[13] There have been over 4,400 violent incidents recorded between Hezbollah and Israel since the start of the war,[14] and approximately 100,000 Israelis have been evacuated from northern Israel since the beginning of the conflict.[15]

On 1 April 2024, the Iranian consulate annex building adjacent to the Iranian embassy in Damascus, Syria, was struck by an Israeli airstrike, killing 16 people, including Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior Quds Force commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and seven other IRGC officers. Soon after the attack, Iran vowed revenge,[16] with reports suggesting this as a potential motive for the airstrike.[17] Iran claimed the building was part of the embassy compound, while Israel maintained it was a building used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and located outside the fenced compound of the embassy.[18][19] Many countries and international organizations condemned the attack. The United States denied involvement or prior knowledge.[20]

In the weeks preceding the attack, the United States, France, Germany and the United Kingdom all warned Iran not to attack Israel, and that such an attack would be a major escalation and could lead to a military response by the West against Iran.[21][22][23] Iran was warned by Israel that such an attack could lead to a direct Israeli military response on Iranian soil.[24] Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Kuwait have reportedly[according to whom?] taken steps to prevent the US from using its bases in their territories for a possible attack against Iran.[25][26] Iran threatened to attack United States military bases if it intervened and defended Israel in early April 2024.[27][28]

Events

13 April

Iran launched a drone and missile attack targetting Israel on the evening of 13 April 2024.[29][30][31] The attack consisted of 'dozens of drones' according to Israeli and US officials[29][32][33][34] and several ballistic missiles according to Iranian news agency IRNA.[31] Israeli officials estimated that around 100 drones were launched,[35] while a US official predicted that 400 to 500 drones and missiles would be launched from Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen, though the majority would be from Iran.[36] The presence of missiles was possible.[5][37] While the attack was in progress, ABC News reported that Israel said that only military sites had been targeted.[38] Hezbollah and Iranian-backed groups in Iraq, Syria and Yemen also launched rockets towards Israel.[39]

Some of the released videos indicate the use of Shahed 136 drones.[40]

American and British warplanes shot down an unspecified number of Iranian drones, according to American officials and Israeli Channel 12.[41]

Reactions

Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Israel all closed their airspace in response to the attacks, with Iranian airspace being closed to VFR only flights.[42][43][44] Contrary to media reports, Jordan did not announce a state of emergency.[45] The United Kingdom condemned the Iranian attack on Israel as reckless.[46]
