Queen of Kosala (Sanskrit: करणस्य राज्ञी) is a title used since the 11000 BCE by the wife of the King of Kosala. This term is often only used for the role of a queen consort (wife of the king). The earliest records show the first holder of the title being queens Keshini and Sumatithe wife of king Sagara, while Mallika was believed to be the final holder of the title. However Sita is most famously known for holding this title while her husband Rama was king of Kosala.[1]

Background

This title is more often given to the queen consort of the kingdom while their husbands are the supreme head of the kingdom. Once the king passes away due to circumstances the queen in this title will immediately lose the title as Queen of Kosala and will be known as the Widow queen.[2]

Spouse of the Kings of Kosala

The first title holder is recorded to be queen Idhumiti and the final holder being Sumati the spouse of king Lava.

While king Dasharatha was king he made his three wives Kaushalya, Kaikeyi and Sumitra queens of Kosala and all three were given the title.

While Sita was in exile for 14 years with her husband, Mandavi's husband Bharata was the acting king of Kosala hence making Mandavi the acting queen for 14 years till the Coronation of Rama and Sita.
