History

KFWD signed on in 1988 as a Telemundo affiliate. From that day to late 2000, KFWD signed off during the overnight hours every night. It lost the affiliation when Telemundo's owner, NBC, bought KXTX in 2001 and moved the affiliation to that station on January 1, 2002. During KFWD's final month as a Telemundo affiliate, they aired English-language infomercials in the morning and overnight hours. KFWD then picked up English programming dropped by both KXTX and KSTR (Real TV reruns, and Access Hollywood), which became a Telefutura affiliate. The station also included live sporting events including the Big 12 Men's Basketball Tournament, as well as FC Dallas soccer & Dallas Sidekicks Indoor Soccer Games that were dropped from KLDT.

Belo Corp. (who managed this station since 2006) had the option to buy KFWD and create a duopoly with WFAA. As of 2012, that has not happened. However, Belo did provide advertising sales assistance, certain technical services and facilities to support the operations of KFWD, as well as air repurposed editions of WFAA's newscasts and other WFAA programming (including The Dr. Oz Show) every evening. Belo also operated KFWD.tv, the station's website, in a visual format similar to all Belo stations.

On October 17, 2011; KFWD has rebranded itself as "Classic TV" with a new logo and color scheme, expressing a strong emphasis on the classic television programming in their lineup. The new logo and branding was first revealed on YouTube on August 3, 2011,[3] and later on KFWD's Facebook page on October 7.[4] It was then rolled out to their website a month later.

On August 1, 2012, KFWD returns to Spanish-language programming after over 10 years. This time, affiliated with the new MundoFox network. It was announced on June 11, 2012. It was originally slated to begin on August 13, but the new network has pushed the switch to August 1st at 6AM as a "soft launch" for a test run. As a result with the announcement, Belo ceases its services with HIC Broadcasting, Inc and is no longer a duopoly with WFAA.[5] This move could create a new partnership with Fox-owned & operated station KDFW once the network's official launch occurs on August 13. The last show aired on KFWD was "Shepherd's Chapel" at 5AM. There was no farewell message from the "Classic TV" station nor any visual announcement on TV of the programming change, except for "It has been a pleasure" from KFWD's Facebook page. It is unknown what would become of KFWD's programming inventory, however much of the shows can be seen on Me-TV affiliate KTXD-TV, and on Antenna TV (via KDAF channel 33.2). KFWD once broadcast its ".2" sub-channel with a simulcast of the main station. Since the affiliate switchover, channel 52.2 has been discontinued.

Programming

KFWD is fed via satellite MundoFox programming. Prior to the new network's soft launch on August 1st, KFWD aired classic sitcom & drama shows as well as rebroadcasting WFAA-TV's evening newscasts & syndicated talk shows. They also aired The Daily Buzz from 6 to 7AM in the mornings.
