Camel?!

This template causes the caption to read 'in the European Union (camel)'. I presume 'camel' is an official term for the colour used, but it's an obscure term and looks rather bizarre in this context (I initially thought it was some kind of weird vandalism). I suggest changing it to 'orange' which the average reader will understand better. Cop 633 16:03, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Continental Europe v Europe

In English the phrase "continental Europe" is sometimes defined as meaning Europe less its islands. Its unfortunate, therefore, that setting the region parameter to "Europe" results in a place being described as being "on the European continent". I would suggest it would be much more straightforward to describe the place as being "in Europe" as this avoids potential ambiguity. — Blue-Haired Lawyer ^t 20:32, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Region subregion

Currently, this template places regions above subregions in captions. Surely, since we're identifying a place's location within larger areas, it makes sense to go downwards with increasing area? CMD (talk) 05:26, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Hardcoded width

Hardcoding the width of the region fields to 250px in order to accommodate the legend is problematic. Can we come up with a less hacky way to do this? Kaldari (talk) 16:46, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

As a result of the hardcoded width, this template is now increasing the width by about 10px of every instance of Template:Infobox country it is present on, from the infobox's default width of 22em. I assumed whoever wrote the documentation was just explaining the behaviour. This syntax will always result in the title of the page being bolded. If this is intended, it should be '''{{PAGENAME}}'''. However I don't see why the country's name should be bolded? I have added |country={{nobold|country name}} to many, many articles, although now I realise actually anything would prevent the link (for example |country=<span>country name</span> or |country=country name ) because it is simply looking for a linkable term. Antarctica

Since Antarctica is a continent, not an island, locations there should be "in" not "on" it. "On Antarctica" simply sounds incorrect. Hairy Dude (talk) 11:46, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

@Hairy Dude and Rob984: Since "in" is the default, I think a better edit would be to delete the two "Antarctica" lines completely. Add option for argument "link=no" to not link the country name if desired

See Republic of Ireland. The caption links to Ireland. I have prevented this by adding |country=<span>Ireland</span>, but this is not a very elegant solution. On other articles, such as Germany it makes the name appear in bold, which again I believe is not intended. At some articles, such as Portugal, I have added |country={{nobold|Portugal}}, which again is not very elegant. Rob984 (talk) 16:55, 30 January 2017 (UTC)

I would like to see the sandbox copied into the mainspace, which includes a few changes:

• Removal of the hard coded width of 250px, which has no effect other than widening the infobox the template is placed into. The default width of an infobox is 22em, which unless the user has modified their preferences is about 250px. So this means any infobox this template is placed in is usually just widened by a few pixels.
• Removed html tags which reduced the font size of the colours to 9px, which is a violation of MOS:ACCESS: "In no case should the resulting font size drop below 85% of the page font size (or 11px)". I don't see a reason why they should be smaller anyway, they're in brackets which is sufficient.
• As with #Edit request 8 October 2016, prevented the circular link [[{{PAGENAME}}]] which just causes the page title to appear as bold text for no reason, requiring editors to use Template:nobold to counteract this abnormal behaviour.

All tested at Template:Map caption/testcases.

Small font sizes removed per MOS:FONTSIZE

I have removed the too-small font sizing from this template per MOS:FONTSIZE. I did not address the forced spaces in the caption text, which seem excessive to me but which may have some purpose. – Jonesey95 (talk) 05:20, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

The font size in this template seems broken to me. See map caption in the infobox for France. The font is larger for the caption than in the rest of the infobox. Dgp4004 (talk) 15:22, 15 April 2024 (UTC)
