AfD Discussions

I'm not sure if you see the irony in asking "why is this article being singled out" on a dozen different AfD discussions; however I'd like to suggest that rather than writing long and similar commentaries at these discussions, that you add any reliable sources you have to the articles in question and help to demonstrate notability. There is no problem with book stubs as long as they meet the requirements of WP:NBOOK and many of the articles you are commenting on do not meet those criteria. Best wishes Flat Out let's discuss it 02:36, 4 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

When adding links to material on external sites, as you did to Negationism in India: Concealing the Record of Islam, please ensure that the external site is not violating the creator's copyright. Linking to websites that display copyrighted works is acceptable as long as the website's operator has created or licensed the work. Knowingly directing others to a site that violates copyright may be considered contributory infringement. This is particularly relevant when linking to sites such as YouTube, where due care should be taken to avoid linking to material that violates its creator's copyright. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If you believe the linked site is not violating copyright with respect to the material, then you should do one of the following:

  • If the linked site is the copyright holder, leave a message explaining the details on the article Talk page;
  • If a note on the linked site credibly claims permission to host the material, or a note on the copyright holder's site grants such permission, leave a note on the article Talk page with a link to where we can find that note;
  • If you are the copyright holder or the external site administrator, adjust the linked site to indicate permission as above and leave a note on the article Talk page;

If the material is available on a different site that satisfies one of the above conditions, link to that site instead. Darkness Shines (talk) 10:24, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent edits

Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button ( or ) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Thank you. --SineBot (talk) 17:06, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Reference Errors on 8 April

Hello, I'm ReferenceBot. I have automatically detected that some edits performed by you may have introduced errors in referencing. They are as follows:

Please check these pages and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, ReferenceBot (talk) 00:34, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for April 9

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Decolonizing the Hindu Mind, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Edwin Bryant (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Book notability

You might be interested in the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Signature in the Cell. In particular, you might want to have a look at the list of reviews I've listed there. I can't guarantee that this article won't be deleted, but because I'm putting up substantial sources, I think I have the stronger argument. Best, Lesser Cartographies (talk) 08:04, 10 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

As an aside: I think it's great that you're putting so much effort into helping to find sources for articles. It'll be a little bit easier on me (and other people you'll interact with) if you communicate about potential sources in a bit more standard way. If you're interested, take a look at template:cite, template:cite newspaper, cite web, etc. They're a little bit awkward work with, but they'll really help in communicating more clearly. For example, this:

*{{cite journal | title=What DNA Has to Tell Us About the Origins of Life | last=Scambray | first=Terry | journal=New Oxford Review | date=October 2010 | volume=77 | number=8 | page=40 | url=http://www.newoxfordreview.org/reviews.jsp?did=1010-scambray}}

ends up looking like this:

  • Scambray, Terry (October 2010). "What DNA Has to Tell Us About the Origins of Life". New Oxford Review. 77 (8): 40.

Filling in the URL field is great, but even giving an ISBN or OCLC number is really helpful.

Hope you find that useful. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ping me. The WP:TEAHOUSE is also really good place to ask.

Hi Calypsomusic. I don't think further conversation at AfD is going to result in agreement. You're making a good-faith argument based on what you think wikipedia should be like, and I'm arguing from the policies we already have. I can certainly see your point of view at a geocities site may be perfectly useful, but we have a longstanding consensus with regards to verifiability: we don't use self-published sources (with a handful of very narrow exceptions). This policy saves us a lot of grief—granted, at the cost of missing a few articles. You're effectively asking us to abandon that stance, not for the benefit of the encyclopedia, but to keep one particular article. I understand your argument, I don't agree with it, and I think it's best if we left it at that and allow the closing admin to make the decision. The Committee's full decision can be read at the "Final decision" section of the decision page. Please familiarise yourself with the information page at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Discretionary sanctions, with the appropriate sections of Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Procedures, and with the case decision page before making any further edits to the pages in question.
