Languishing page move
Hi again, JD. I wonder if you could lend an ear and maybe a hand. We've got hard-won consensus that was a long time in coming at Talk:Car accident to change the article title from Car accident to Traffic collision, because "accident" is not neutral — it connotes fault, inevitability, and/or unpredictability. "Collision", on the other hand, has no connotation at all; it just means two or more objects colliding. Also, collisions often involve vehicles other than cars, and/or pedestrians. So "car accident" is not only not neutral, but is also not appropriately broad in scope to represent the article.

Once consensus was attained and the discussion left open for several days to make sure, I went to make the move, but was thwarted by the existence of a redirect page at Traffic collision (which points at Car accident). I placed a request for move five days ago, on which there's been no action, but it did seem to draw the attention of an apparently tendentious editor who appears to wish to spoil the consensus with his lone (IMO spurious) dissent. It is my understanding and experience that consensus does not require unanimity; would you mind please commenting on that and taking a look at the discussion? What will it take to get some action on the requested move? Thanks, —<span style="font:bold 11px Arial;display:inline;border:#151B8D 1px solid;background-color:#FFFF00;padding:0 4px 0 4px;">Scheinwerfermann</span> T&middot;C<small>08:38, 11 May 2009 (UTC)</small>

My wheel-warring policy:
Admins: If you see me make a logged action that you think I should not have done, I will not consider it wheel-warring if you undo it without asking for my permission. However, if I marked the action as being done after running a checkuser query, or as part of a sockpuppet investigation, you should ask me or another checkuser before undoing it. In any case, if you do revert one of my actions, I would appreciate it if you tell me that you did so. Thanks!

Chess

Hello J. delanoy. I am very interested in your chess board and actually tried to pinch it. When I copied and pasted it to my own page I couldn't change it to my own name, so I am very cheekily asking you if it is possible and if you could tell me how to go about it. PS, I learned to play chess when I was four years old and even taught a future champion. The downside is, I think that four year old boy could probably beat his older self. :( Cheers. I reverted your edit on Catholic sex abuse cases.

I think it is a grammar & word choice issue--the accused priests may be sexually deviant, but they may have committed abuse. I thought there might be an issue because being deviant is less objectionable that actually committing abuse against children, so I deliberately did not make it a minor edit. If you disagree, lets discuss it on the talk page. One of the biggest problems in discussing loaded issues like this is sloppy language--"What is this person really saying?" Vandalism warnings

Hi. I am monitoring the Leaning Tower of Pisa article, as you have been recently. A fair lot of vandalism happens there, as you see, and I'm not sure whether to ask for semi-protection again. Anyway.

I see that you put warnings into a vandal's talk page. Can only administrators do that? Can I too, if I happen to revert blatant vandalism? Is there a central information page for this kind of interventions and/or a standard way to ask admins for blocking a repeating vandal?

Thank you :-) --Andylong (talk) 17:06, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone can leave warnings. A set of templates can be found at WP:UTM, or you can install Twinkle to automate the process. To report repeat vandals to admins, go to WP:AIV, or you can use Twinkle to automate this as well. J.delanoygabsadds 00:45, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kerr lake edit

I am curious why you chose to remove the added link to the Bugg's Island Lake web site. I went to the linked site and think it excellently provides information regarding fishing on Kerr Lake. Since fishing is one of the most popular recreational events on this man-made reservoir, I think the link expands knowledge directly related to the Wiki article. I'd like to put the link back but would be glad to reconsider based on your reasoning. LLDMart (talk) 16:09, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The user who added the link also added links to several other pages. External links on Wikipedia must add something encyclopedic to the article, and adding links pointing at the same domain to many articles is usually viewed as spamming. For my part, I would be interested in knowing how you saw this, and why you are contacting me. J.delanoygabsadds 16:14, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, if that is indeed the one that you are talking about, the only thing I can think of is that you must have a shared IP address, and that someone else did the vandalism. If that's the case, just don't worry about it. J.delanoygabsadds 22:30, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Excuse us, J.delanoy, but there has been questionable editing on Hurricane Georges' Impact section-whosoever performed the edits may have performed dubious grammar and not-good changing across the Impact areas. Our class is studying weather, storms or drought included-we cannot print pages with questionable edits, grammars or improper changes. Is there something you could do about this? Macedonia evidence

In your evidence you have forgotten Macedonia (region) hits. Keep in mind that the hits come mainly from Republic of Macedonia (see my response to Fut.Perf. about that). That is true for the organic traffic from Google but could also be true for Wikipedia itself if that reflects the regional interest to the search term "Macedonia" in general internet usage (no reason to think that it doesn't). Far far 2nd place of volume of hits are originated from Albania and third from Greece. Shadowmorph ^"^ 19:22, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Even if you had any way at all of verifying your claims (which you don't), I do not care where the hits for Macedonia (the country) originate from, it makes no difference whatsoever. The issue I am addressing with my evidence is "What are most people looking for when they search for Macedonia". That is independent of anything else, since the utility of the navigational structure is only dependent on what people are looking for, not on where those people are located, or anything else. There are many places named "United States", but our article United States is about the United States of America. Unquestionably most people looking at this article are from the United States of America. Who cares? The navigational structure is successful.
With regard to Macedonia (region), I am not going to include that in my evidence, simply because it has way too many incoming links to be able to determine with any degree of accuracy how many page-views are coming from Macedonia. Macedonia (Greece) also has too many in my opinion, but again, I don't really care. In any case, Macedonia (Greece) has just under twice as many incoming links as the most that any of the other three articles I linked to has. Macedonia (region) has twice as many as all three of those articles combined. That is way too much of a statistical aberration to be even remotely useful, far more so than even the (Greece) article. Also, as evidenced by the fact that I overlooked both the (Greece) article and the (region) one, and John Carter apparently overlooked the (region) article, it is obvious that a far smaller percentage of page-views for these pages originate on Macedonia than the three I originally linked to, since they are no where near as conspicuous as the hatnote links; the latter is what people would instinctively click on if they got to an article and did not find what they were looking for.
The only way to settle this issue conclusively would be to create several temporary redirects, and point the links on Macedonia to these redirects. I considered doing this, but I decided not to for a very good reason. Page-view counts are very, very easily manipulated, as they are absolutely untraceable (unless you are a dev, and even then...) and many macros and browser add-ons exist to automatically reload pages. It would be impossible for me to change those links without people noticing, and I would have no choice but to explain myself, which would absolutely unquestionably result in people trying to skew my results. I wanted a real sample, so I did not say anything about what I was going to do.
Does all this mean that my data is meaningless? Perhaps, but I do not think so. If someone went to Macedonia looking for info about the Greek province or the geographical region, they would not read the entire first section and click on the link to Macedonia (region) and/or Macedonia (Greece). They would click on Macedonia (disambiguation). To suppose otherwise is absurd in my opinion. J.delanoygabsadds 23:17, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for responding. Curious you say that since a lot fuss has been made here that the main topic should reflect usability for English-speakers and not any other people (ethnic group or whatever). Now you say that it is indifferent of where the hits originate. Remember the Georgia case. In August 2008 Georgia had overwhelmingly more hits than Georgia, US. No article was moved. Oh, and I base my assertion to this piece of statistics, here (check Regional interest):
see how different the search terms are in the US
Also
1st result in Google for "Macedonia" is Wikipedia entry for Macedonia
therefore the above demographics are transferred into Wikipedia. (I bet my right hand that more than half of Wikipedia traffic is actually organic traffic from Google)
Also
How can the above happen in a general encyclopedia with English speaking readers? do the New-Zealanders and the Canadians care about the second so much? Should the English encyclopedia became a reference tool useful for the people of one country against those from another country?
And something related. Explain to me this[3]. I introduced Macedonians (Greeks), a poor quality article at the time, as an entry in the dab page (then at Macedonia). Immediately it gets stable 800 hits/day. Future Perfect argues to remove it. We split the page to noun/adj and Macedonian has very few hits. The article drops back to zero. He blanks Macedonians (Greeks); I re-write it. It is now at 50 hits/day. Shadowmorph ^"^ 00:49, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
First, your notes about Georgia are totally irrelevant. For one thing, we do not suddenly change our navigational structure just because of a current event. Second, Georgia is a disambiguation page. This is because as a long-term trend , neither the country nor the state has a clear majority of visitors, unlike Macedonia, which has somewhere around 500% of visitors looking for info about the modern country.
I am not entirely sure why you linked to Google trends. They show that worldwide statistics are remarkably similar to the US statistics in terms of categories. In terms of country of origin, of course people are more likely to search for info about their own country than other ones. That should be obvious. And as I explained before and will do again, for my arguments, it does not matter. My evidence is only concerned with making the navigational structure as easy to use as possible for as many people as possible.
The English language Wikipedia is written for English speakers, and it follows the norms of the English speaking world. I don't care if Google directs hundreds of people here from around the world. That is not our problem. And even if it is our problem, I. do. not. care. Full stop. I have absolutely zero interest in arguing this with you, as I have had it about up to here with this mess. There is nothing that you have said here about that, or will say here about that, that has not already been plastered across nearly every page on this site even remotely related to this dispute, so you do not need to waste your time and mine repeating it. Trust me, I know what you are trying to say. Repeating it over and over and over and over will not make me understand you better. And the real clincher with me is that I my evidence does not even relate to this part of the issue. All my evidence deals with is the page-view statistics of the articles. I don't care if 99% of the hits on Macedonia (ancient kingdom) originate in Fiji. The navigational structure's facility is not affected by where the hits originate. While I'm at it, my statement, that nationality does not matter, ONLY extends to the simple navigational structure of the topic. It does not extend to any other area of this dispute, so stop taking my words out of context. I am sick and tired of dealing with you people. You take every word, phrase, and sentence and dissect it, twisting it around to fit your own personal POV, and if someone makes a point that squarely contradicts your own beliefs, you either disregard it completely or simply dodge the issue. Or you come up with wild random crap that has utterly no bearing on anything. I already explained why all these other links you are giving me are not of consequence, but I will do it again, since apparently I did not yell loud enough the first time.
If someone went to Macedonia looking for info about the Greek province or the geographical region, or ANYTHING RELATED TO THE TERM "MACEDONIA" THAT IS NOT THE MODERN COUNTRY, they would not read the entire first section or the entire article to find the link to Macedonia (region) and/or Macedonia (Greece), or whatever. They would click on Macedonia (disambiguation) in the hatnote. To suppose otherwise is patently absurd. Since all of the articles you linked me to or will link me to are not prominently (or at all) linked in Macedonia, if someone visited the latter looking for them, THERE WOULD BE A PAGE-VIEW ON THE DISAMBIGUATION PAGE TO SHOW THIS. Unless you can convince me otherwise, I will not change my table, as all relevant information is already there. J.delanoygabsadds 01:41, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Why are you so angry, I thought we were having a discussion. I didn't ask you to change anything in your evidence. If you think my points are irrelevant then Ok. I will not discuss this any further since that upsets you. You could have told me from the start: Hey shadow, I don't want to discuss it because I am tired of "you people". For what is worth I didn't associate you that as belonging to any "people", but you and other friendly admins tend to do so all the time. So "we people" quits this discussion now. Thanks for talking anyhow Shadowmorph ^"^

Wikipedia Admin Scam

You may recall that you assisted me a while back in closing an old account under another user name. Today I received an e-mail from "The Wikipedia Freedom Fighters" purporting to be Wikipedia e-mail, but it was actually from a gmail account. The sender was requesting, since the old account is no longer in use, that I "donate" the account to the "Wikipedia Freedom Fighters" by sending them my login information. It appears that there is some kind of scam going on with Wikipedia admin accounts. I did not and will not reply to the e-mail, but I'm not sure if anything else should be done. Any thoughts? •••Life of Riley (TC) 00:11, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know. That's... wow. J.delanoygabsadds 00:16, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AVI.

Just thought I'd let you know that the bot at AVI is requesting attention from multiple admins because it's backlogged. - Eugene Krabs (talk) 01:50, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, —Scheinwerfermann T·C08:38, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
