Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.
Signed...

snakes on a plane

I'm reverting your edit to Snakes on a Plane. You had changed Internet meme to Internet phenomenon. In fact there is a difference: Snakes on a plane is a meme, it's already developed derivatives (snakes on a blog, snakes on an elevator, snakes on <insert object here), which is the main characteristic of a meme. The internet phenomenon article, moreover, is broader and includes both memes and persons from the internet such as Tucker Max and Ellen Feiss. Meme is more appropriate. SWATJester Ready Aim Fire! 03:09, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DOH! I had no idea that Internet meme was merged with phenomenon. Self reverting back to your version! SWATJester Ready Aim Fire! 03:16, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 04:30, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can you tell me what I did wrong on this page to be labeled vandalism? Aelfthrytha 04:00, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

To Dustimagic

okay, dude, the changes in Emma Watson are factual. I read ALL the Harry Potter books and the first book IS called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Not "Philosopher's". Also, the thing about Peter Van "Pels",is true, too. I read the Diary of Anne Frank once and it said Peter Van Daan, not Peter Van "Pels". So that is not considered "vandalism". I do have to say sorry about the other recent things.*gulp* but the others were from facts!!!!! geez, u gotta understand THAT, at least!!!! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.142.78.173 (talkcontribs) 11 April 2006 (UTC)

In reply on Dustimagic's behalf (forgive me if I'm presumptious), you've consistently ignored the invisible comments (visible during editing) that clearly state, "EDITORS: Please do not change "Philosopher's"—see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Describing_points_of_view#Nationalism". This means you've also ignored the passage within the article that states, "(released in the United States as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone)"—in other words, it was "Sorceror's" only in the United States. Wikipedia does its best, per policy, to take a world view. Please respect that. RadioKirk talk to me 04:29, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for backing me up regarding the Harry Potter issue. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 04:31, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
You're quite welcome. I'm very familiar with this issue; in fact, I'm the one who wrote the invis comment ref'd above ;) RadioKirk talk to me 04:32, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, the thing about Peter is annoyin' me

that statement is TRUE already! In the book, it said that his name WAS Peter Van Daan. I think YOU mispelled it!!!! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.142.78.173 (talkcontribs) 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Edit Summary

I was creating a new category on a users talk page. I assumed the edit summary would be returned as the name of that category. Thanks for the warning, but I make better summaries for my edits than most users. You'd know that if you went to my contributions page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Jelligraze on average my summaries are at least a sentence or more long. --Jelligraze 04:50, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's just a friendly reminder nothing to take as a warning. I had been sending them to all the recent changes without summaries (most of them are chronic non-summarys). You do make more summaries than most. Thanks ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 18:14, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

VandalProof 1.1 is Now Available For Download

Happy Easter to all of you, and I hope that this version may fix your current problems and perhaps provide you with a few useful new tools. You can download version 1.1 at User:AmiDaniel/VandalProof. Let me warn you, however, to please be extremely careful when using the new Rollback All Contributions feature, as, aside from the excessive server lag it would cause if everyone began using it at once, it could seriously aggitate several editors to have their contributions reverted. If you would like to experiment with it, though, I'd be more than happy to use my many sockpuppets to create some "vandalism" for you to revert. If you have any problems downloading, installing, or otherwise, please tell me about them at User:AmiDaniel/VP/Bugs and I will do my best to help you. Thanks. AmiDaniel (Talk) 06:44, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

AJ Roach

Hey Dusti,

I see you speed deleted AJ Roach, and I gather that this was done without an AfD vote. I had nothing to do with that page, but as something of a fan of the guy's music I'm somewhat dissappointed. His music does not fit into any mass market genre, but it is not obvious to me that he does not meet WP:MUSIC criteria. Consider the following from WP:Music:

  • Has gone on an international concert tour, or a national concert tour in at least one large or medium-sized country, reported in notable and verifiable sources.
  • Roach has toured most of the US and Scottland in 2004-2005 playing small venues.tour, press.
  • Has been placed in rotation nationally by any major radio network.
  • Has been the subject of a half hour or hour broadcast on a national radio network.
  • In ~late 2004 Roach was featured as a live in studio guest on BBC2's Bob Harris Country. I have the exact date somewhere. Harris was playing his music often at the time. Seems their online playlists are not archived beyond a few weeks though.
  • Has won or placed in a major music competition.
  • For acoustic singer-songwriters winning first place in the general category of the Chris Austin Songwriting Competition at MerleFest is considered significant. 2004 winners.

Would it be a waste of time to ask for this deletion to be reviewed? -MrFizyx 03:09, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have undeleted this article per a review of Mr. Roach. He is indeed notable enough to be included and does in fact meet WP:MUSIC by some of the standards expressed above. I apologize for this matter and thank you for alerting me. Some articles sent to speedy deletion are deleted by mistake as was this one. Sorry, ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 04:48, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great, thanks for taking care of that! -MrFizyx 04:57, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

VandalProof Problems?

I was just patrolling recent changes, and I noticed a few strange edits you've made, I believe with VandalProof. For instance you posted a VP-formatted warning on an anon's talk page after this revert. What seemed strange to me was that, on the revert, it simply left and edit summary of "Reverted edits by X to last version by Y" without "using VandalProof." And the warning you left was completely without any edit summary. Is this a bug in the software, have you managed to tweak it somewhow I didn't know was possible, or did you not use VP to do these reverts? I'm just curious to know. AmiDaniel (Talk) 05:13, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, I didn't tweak it. What's been happening, and I have notived this with other users as well I believe, is that when the VandalProof refert button is pressed the program acts like it reverts the changes but instead only posts a warning message. So what I've been doing is clicking the Revert Template:Test:? button and quickly pressing my admin rollback button however sometimes the page loads to fast. Is there something I can do to avoid this problem? Thanks for noticing. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 05:20, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Aha, I know why. I just checked your monobook and you don't have popups installed. Unfortunately VP is currently still dependent upon popups (though I didn't know until about two days ago ... I thought autoclick and autosummary were built into WP), but later releases will be independent of it. In fact, my local version is almost free of popups, just a couple more hours and it'll be there. For now, you're just going to have to add {{subst:navpop}} to your monobook.js. Sorry about the inconvenience, but that should fix the problem. AmiDaniel (Talk) 05:25, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I was just reading this over and saw that might be the problem. Keep up the improvements and good work with the program I think its amazing despite my problems. ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 05:28, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

you removed a link

hey i put up the myspace page link for mumia and you took it down. since dead prez had a myspace page link, i figured others could. maybe you thought Tahir was just some fan, but he is a political revolutionary rapper, and he regularly updates the 'Free Mumia' myspace page. here is a link to Tahir's Homecoming cd on amazon : [1]

hope you put back the link, roweezy

Gangsta Rap

An individual completely deleted a large portion of the gangsta rap page, including several paragraphs about the different eras of the specific subgenre. Thus, I decided to change it back to its original state, but it's manifest that, perhaps, the changes were intended to be made and were not the product of an ostentatious user...

Double jepordy for 66.109.218.95

Hi Dustinmagic,

66.109.218.95, who has only done one vandalism, has got two warnings. Should one of the messages be removed? Otherwise, keep up the good work! Thanks, Andjam 02:49, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have removed the extra warning. I think we both posted our warnings around the same time. Thanks, ¡Dustimagic! (T/C) 02:53, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Scouting article work

If you are getting this, it is because you do or did work on Scouting articles (see Wikipedia:WikiProject_Scouting#Participants_and_primary_areas_of_interest).

As the Scouting WikiProject has been formed since early January 2006, we've had many great improvements made in this area of Wiki and I want to personally thank everyone for their help. We don't always agree on things, but we keep moving forward. YIS, Rlevse 22:09, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Investigate/Block User

User:207.80.127.250 is a repeat vandal. All his recent edits are vandalism. He vandalized my userpage. Maybe you can take care of this issue. He's been blocked several times before. Thanks.

User:HarmilIs reverting articles like “Bob Sagget” unnecessary. I was putting names at the bottom, of the article about common names he was called and I said that the names were harassment. Yet he called it vandalism. Not only that he post any objections when I was going to repost it (Talk:Bob Saget). He is taking away freedom of speech. My claims are valid as he has been blocked before. Please help.

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

VandalProof 1.2 Now Available

After a lenghty, but much-needed Wikibreak, I'm happy to announce that version 1.2 of VandalProof is now available for download! Beyond fixing some of the most obnoxious bugs, like the persistent crash on start-up that many have experienced, version 1.2 also offers a wide variety of new features, including a stub-sorter, a global user whitelist and blacklist, navigational controls, and greater customization. You can find a full list of the new features here. While I believe this release to be a significant improvement over the last, it's nonetheless nowhere near the end of the line for VandalProof. Thanks to Rob Church, I now have an account on test.wikipedia.org with SysOp rights and have already been hard at work incorporating administrative tools into VandalProof, which I plan to make available in the near future. An example of one such SysOp tool that I'm working on incorporating is my simple history merge tool, which simplifies the process of performing history merges from one article into another. Anyway, if you haven't already, I'd encourage you to download and install version 1.2 and take it out for a test-drive. As always, your suggestions for improvement are always appreciated, and I hope that you will find this new version useful. Happy editing! --AmiDaniel (talk) 02:18, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Can you please contact me?

You posted a welcome on my user page when I first started using Wikipedia back in January. I've made a few edits in Wikipedia since then but my main activity has been creation of a wiki related to Jesuit identity. At this point, it should be viewed as a proof of concept. I tried to reach you by e-mail from your user page but I got a message saying e-mail is not set up or is disabled. You can e-mail me through my user page. Thanks. November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Image:AddisonTollTunnel.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:AddisonTollTunnel.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sherool (talk) 13:05, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:Venturestrip.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Venturestrip.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. Citing sources?

Hello,

My main contribution on Wiki is on Billings, Montana and not It seems that I have to have sources now. I really don't want to take the time and effort to research all the sources for everything I contribute. I know that Wiki doesn't want people to put untruthful information. I don't know what your position on this but some if not all of it comes from the residents who actually live there like myself and knows what goes on. All of my information I contribute at least is true or reasonable. I check the accuracy of contribs on the website and make any necessary changes or deletions.

merge WikiProject Philmont Scout Ranch

As WikiProject Philmont Scout Ranch seems to have been inactive since the turn of the year, I propose making it a taskforce of Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting, similar to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting/Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting task force. That will ensure it won't get deleted (the WP:Council has been cleaning out inactive projects in recent months) and it will standardize that project with our existing MoS and membership base. We invite your suggestions and comments at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Scouting#mergefrom WikiProject Philmont Scout Ranch. Chris 20:18, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:HCTRA.gif

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:HCTRA.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

After reading your comment on my talk page and reviewing the situation (examining portions of the article's history, the reason given for the two deletions, etc.), I have found that the article's history was deleted improperly and that I overreacted to whatever content problems I thought I saw. The article does need extensive work and cleanup but that doesn't require deletion (except maybe for some of the earlier edits including text from here. Nonetheless, I found no reason for a "mass article-history purge".

As for the school's administration, I'm sorry they are upset but Wikipedia does not write for the benefit of outside entities. Much of the article still reads like an advertisement and still requires a lot of cleanup and removal of unencyclopedic content. I can assure you that I have nothing person against the school and have never even been to Texas. I hope this resolves the issues regarding this matter. [Frankie goes to Hollywood] Artikel

Why do u do history no justice? Frankie Goes to Hollywood (FGTH) was a UK dance-pop band that was popular in the mid 1980s. The Liverpool group which became famous was fronted by Holly Johnson (vocals), supported by Paul Rutherford (vocals, keyboards), Peter Gill (drums, percussion), Mark O'Toole (bass guitar) and Brian Nash (guitar). At first, Frankie Goes To Hollywood was with Ambrose Reynolds, Steve Lovell and Phil Renshaw....this band demoed and rehearsed but never performed live. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.104.40.192 (talk) 10:12, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with Image:BMHC.png

Thanks for uploading Image:BMHC.png. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e., as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised and that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions). This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts.
