WikiCup 2022 July newsletter[edit]

The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, with 746 points, a tally built both on snooker and other sports topics, and on more general subjects.
  • Kingdom of Scotland Bloom6132, with 683 points, garnered mostly from "In the news" items and related DYKs.
  • Sammi Brie, with 527, from a variety of submissions related to radio and television stations.

Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is a good article nomination, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. colorblind issues[edit]

If you'd rather, we could also simply use bold players names for making the finals, and italics for withdrawal. In fact I went ahead and changed it since you dont like the symbols. Since there are only two aspects bold/italic can work. When there are more than two symbols is probably the only way we can do it. Fyunck(click) (talk) 04:04, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I kept the colors but replaced the symbols, I didn't remove them. If symbols are needed in legend boxes to comply with accessibility guidelines, then I am okay with that. Qwerty284651 (talk) 13:57, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Actually symbols are not required at all. Color just can't be the only means to convey information because some people can't see color very well. When we bold a player because they are still active (like we do in many articles), that works instead of making his name green. But whatever you prefer. The types of symbols or bolding don't matter as long as readers can see it. Fyunck(click) (talk) 19:13, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Whatever aids the accessibility community see easier is fine with me. Qwerty284651 (talk) 21:55, 18 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

2023 in tennis moved to draftspace[edit]

An article you recently created, 2023 in tennis, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. -MPGuy2824 (talk) 08:20, 4 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:43, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

2023 Shanghai[edit]

Who told you it was cancelled? This can't be right. ForzaUV (talk) 21:22, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

See this rankings FAQ link. I could be wrong. That 2023 year might've been a typo for 2022. Qwerty284651 (talk) 21:36, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I replied to you regarding this matter in the Masters main article but you probably missed the comment. It's a typo, read the question they answered on the ATP FAQ page, it's about 2022. They even mentioned the no-points Wimbledon in the same sentence, that's for 2022 as we still don't know what AELTC decides for 2023. Shanghai will be played this season, https://www.reuters.com/world/china/china-reopens-borders-final-farewell-zero-covid-2023-01-08/. ForzaUV (talk) 21:08, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I should have waited before an article came out about Shanghai. I rushed it too quickly relying on a typo, not knowing it is a typo, as some small glimpse of "false" proof. Qwerty284651 (talk) 22:13, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Packerfan386. I noticed that you recently removed content without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. Just a friendly reminder Packerfan386beer here 11:57, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Packerfan386, here is the thing. In the many years of editing tennis articles of currently running tournaments and former, I have never come across the {{current sport}} template. I know it's for informative purposes during an event's duration, but I find it, and this is my weird personal reason, a bit cluttery. Why? Because when one opens the draw's articles, the sporting events tag's really in your face and you'd think something is wrong with the article, but is not. I get it, if it's an insufficient sources tag or a no sources..but not the current sporting events template. It really is in thr way. Hence why I removed them. We can leave without them. Instead of reading the lead as one would normally do, they have to go through the tag first and then the lead which takes away from the attention of the reader. I don't know, it's weird. This may not be an adequate/proper reason for me removing those templates, but that's just my personal opinion. Qwerty284651 (talk) 14:54, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have sent you a note about a page you started[edit]

Hello, Qwerty284651. Thank you for your work on 1990 Virginia Slims of Chicago – Singles. User:SunDawn, while examining this page as a part of our page curation process, had the following comments:

Good day! Thank you for creating this article. Hopefully you will write more in the future!

Unfortunately, an article you recently created 1990 Lipton International Players Championships – Women's singles, is not ready as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage with citations from reliable and independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. I've moved your article to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's WP:GNG guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Hello Qwerty284651. I am just letting you know that I contested the speedy deletion of Draft:1990 Lipton International Players Championships – Women's singles, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Redirects of this sort are fine. Thank you. BangJan1999 20:41, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. Qwerty284651 (talk) 20:48, 4 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrolled granted[edit]

Hi Qwerty284651, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.

Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.

Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:08, 7 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Further to this, I just wanted to clarify that the point of autopatrolled is to reduce the workload of new page patrollers. To that end, you should start new articles in user space (this page explains how) and not draft space (as you did with 1990 Canadian Open – Women's singles). Hope that makes sense. Happy editing. Schwede66 21:52, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Can't I just create the new article in article namespace and finish it immediately? Sounds like extra work. I've never created articles in my subpage and then create the article with the full finished version from userspace drafts. Userspace article creation is going to slow things down for me. I've got like 23 more articles to go. sigh...If this violates autopatrol, just strip it off of me. An autopatroller Pablito064 creates articles on a daily basis and they never use userspace drafts. Qwerty284651 (talk) 22:37, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't create extra work. Not at all. You write the article just as normal. Once it's complete, you move it from your user space to article space. It's as simple as that. It does not go anywhere near draft space; that's the important bit.
Start a new article by making a link like so on your user page like so (note the forward slash; that makes it a subpage to your user page): [[/yyyy Virginia Slims of Florida – example]]. When you click on that redlink, it's totally the same as editing in article space. When it's finished and you come to move it, the only thing that you need to be mindful of is that within the move menu, on the left the dropdown menu is set to "User". You need to change that to "(Article)". That's how you move articles between name spaces.
There is no problem starting an article in article space and finishing it off immediately. But you might get dragged away from the task and then it sits there obviously unfinished, and that is a problem. Starting in user space avoids this from ever arising. Heads up to HJ Mitchell. Schwede66 22:49, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Pablito064, I've moved a few of your unfinished articles to draft space. The exact same advice that I've given to Qwerty284651 applies to you as well. Please read the above; saves me from having to copy and paste things onto your personal talk page. Schwede66 22:54, 16 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Pablito064:, sorry for dragging you into this. I take full responsibility for it. I am sorry I messed up. @Schwede66, cut him some slack. He's the inspiration behind me wanting to create tennis draw pages for statistics tennis articles. Don't have to move his unfinished pages into draftspace. Gosh darn it, it's all my fault for ratting out others.😞 Qwerty284651 (talk) 01:32, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Schwede66, do me and everyone else a favor and strip me of my autopatrolled user right. I resign. Qwerty284651 (talk) 01:33, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Chill. It's all good. Just play by the book. It's not hard. Schwede66 03:49, 17 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Pindrice, the names displayed in the tables differ from browser.to browaer base on resolution and having the names on 2 lines is nothing wrong. Plus, the nowrap added skews up the charts as they are vertically elongated, which is visually unappealing on mobile. Qwerty284651 (talk) 04:27, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

move of WP:RFR redirect[edit]

Hi. I hope you are doing well. I moved the WP:RFP back to its original title WP:RFR. We generally shouldn't move redirects. If you think a new/different redirect is better/necessary then keeping the old redirect as it is, and creating the new one is correct option. Regarding WP:RFR, WP:PERM, WP:RFPP and redirects, they are long term redirects, and should be left as they are. WP:RFP may also mean "request for protection", so not creating it would be better. See you around :-)
—usernamekiran (talk) 09:42, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I admire, and respect the way you kept discussion at WT:RFR formal/polite/civil. It is appreciated a lot. See you around :-) —usernamekiran (talk) 01:06, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Formal/polite/civil? Well, thank god for that. Thank you for looking up the few shortcut redirects I presumed weren't taken already and providing your feedback. Much appreciated. Catch you around. Best, Qwerty284651 (talk) 01:13, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New page reviewer granted[edit]

Hi Qwerty284651. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page, including checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline.
  • Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any steps.
  • Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:36, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there, admin @HJ Mitchell. I checked my patroller user rights. They seem to be probational for cca. 5 weeks. My question is: what happens after the probation period? Would I have to reapply or will it get automatically extended to perminent? Don't know how permissions for NPP work, that is why I am asking.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Best, Qwerty284651 (talk) 23:53, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's a trial until the end of next month. If you want it to continue after that you'll need to reapply to PERM or ask me directly. If all is in order, changing it to permanent should be just a formality but if there are any problems it's a chance to stop and discuss them. November Articles for creation backlog drive[edit]

Hello Qwerty284651:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 2600 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent editing history at Current tennis rankings shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war; read about how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you do not violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sashona (talkcontribs) 22:14, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure I am edit warring? I've only reverted your flag removing once in the past 24 hours. My edits are in good faith. You should rethink before accusing me of edit warring, especially the 3R rule. Qwerty284651 (talk) 22:02, 19 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:58, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
