Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) is the third studio album by the Iowa-based Slipknot, and their fourth release altogether.

Album information

Vol. 3 retained much of the sound and subject matter of the last two albums, but is considerably more melodic and pensive than their earlier work. Notably, this is the only Slipknot album to not warrant a Parental Advisory label.

Recorded at producer Rick Rubin's haunted mansion, the album features many guitar solos, which were missing from earlier releases due to the influence of producer Ross Robinson. A special edition of the album, featuring a bonus disc with additional tracks, was released in 2005.

The song "Prelude 3.0" is a reference to the song itself being the opening track on their third album. The opening track on each of Slipknot's albums contains a number.

A remixed version of "Vermilion, Pt. 2" (the "Bloodstone Mix") appeared on the soundtrack to Underworld: Evolution

Reception

Critical reception to Vol. 3 was generally positive. Johnny Loftus of Allmusic, wrote the album is "not just another flashy alt-metal billboard", praising the band's "dedication to making it a Slipknot album".[2] Todd Burns, of Stylus Magazine, wrote that people who accuse the band of having "softened", of "mistaking softness for maturation". Burns went on to call the album "the best pop inflected metal album since System of a Down's Toxicity."[3] Reviewing for Entertainment Weekly, Sean Richardson wrote of the album, "it comes across as a deranged hippie update of another Rubin masterpiece, Slayer's Reign in Blood".[4] Q hailed Vol. 3 as "A triumph".[5] Rolling Stone gave the album a rating of 3 out of 5, stating the album presented "...even newer extremes, which in Slipknot's case means tunefulness and traditional song structures."[6] Alternative Press critisized the album, stating "[Vol. 3] plays out like a tepid, second-rate version of Iowa, which pretty much makes it a third-rate anything else."[7] Vol. 3 peaked at the second position on the Billboard 200,[8] Internet,[9] ARIA,[10] and Canadian sales charts.[9] The album was certified platinum in the United States on February 21, 2005.[11]
