Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Bigroger27509 (talk | contribs) at 10:24, 14 May 2013 (→‎Errors in In the news). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 19:15 on 21 May 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems, because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed, determined not to be an error, or the item has rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Template:ITN-Update

  • Technically speaking, parts per million is a mixing ratio and not a concentration. [1] --LukeSurl t c 20:37, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • Fair enough. In the posting at ITN, the admin said that "mixing ratio" wasn't used in the refs, concentration was. What do you suggest? Is there a ref relevant to this posting that you could add with the correct nomenclature? The Rambling Man (talk) 20:40, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • Eh, it's not a major thing. There's sorta a conflict between being technically correct and following the term that is actually (mis)used. Personally I would go for:
Measurements of carbon dioxide in Earth's atmosphere exceed 400 parts per million, the highest level since the Pliocene epoch.

I'll buy it, just because the budgies survived...  ;) The Rambling Man (talk) 21:02, 12 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in the current or next Did you know...

  • The text says ... that Jerzy Żuławski's Lunar Trilogy published in the 1900s was a major milestone in the history of science fiction and fantasy in Poland?. The phrase "published in the 1900s" needs to be set off by commas. --Trovatore (talk) 00:59, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in today's or tomorrow's On this day...

  • The 2005 item in the current list on the Andijan massacre states anywhere from 187 to a reported 5,000 people died. That should be anywhere from 187 to a reported 1,500 people died. --Epipelagic (talk) 10:07, 13 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • The "protection against" in "...cowpox as a vaccine for protection against smallpox" should be removed or clarified, because its presence sounds like you're trying to vaccinate against the protection, not against the smallpox—in other words, to prevent prevention. Unless this is the actual meaning of this, "vaccine against" would suffice, based on the definition of vaccine.  — TORTOISEWRATH 01:51, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
