I'd like to help, I'm a bit under the edit count and most of that even is anti-vandal but a strange number seem to be the same thing so maybe this could help get rid of some of that. As far as identifying proxies I'm currently running 3 anonomyzing proxies and 2 caching proxies on my local machine alone, I've had some experience with DNSBL but I didn't much like their tool (too much to configure) but have found others since that work much better(Linux proxycheck command). I think anti-vandal would still be my main priority but this is an outlet for them and the backlog is huge, so I'd like to give a hand. Ben (talk) 04:32, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be interested in helping do the open proxy checks. I'm familiar with DNS tools (whois, traceroute, RDNS, etc.) & querying blocklists. I've been working with IP networks since the days of accessing Unix boxes over dumb terminals using a command-line interface. The process has always been a bit mystical - "If you would like to become a verified user, please read the main page". It basically involves showing someone involved in the project (there are few of us) that you know what you're on about - that your advice can be relied on as far as confirming whether an IP is or is not an open proxy. You get the quiz later, but a good way of starting to show that you have the requisite knowledge is to get it right every time with a list of examples IP addresses, like those on the project page. Detailed comments, for example indicating how a proxy can be confirmed, or detailing why you think an IP is not an open proxy will go some way towards that. We could do this on the project talk page instead, but I think if you preface your notes with some kind of disclaimer they might as well go on the project page. -- zzuuzz ^(talk) 16:50, 30 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Have experience with checking and range blocks through CU work on simple and being one of the users comfortable with it (and with easy access to a command prompt to do it on) on checkuser and steward IRC channels. Verified users -- confusing, lame

"If you would like to become a verified user, please read the main page." That's what it says in this article. Certainly we can do better than that. What main page? The Wikipedia main page linked on the left? No, going there and searching for "verified" shows no results. The main WikiProject on open proxies page?
