Manifest is an American supernatural drama television series created by Jeff Rake that premiered on September 24, 2018, on NBC. It centers on the passengers and crew of a commercial airliner who suddenly reappear after being presumed dead for more than five years. It stars Melissa Roxburgh, Josh Dallas, Athena Karkanis, J. R. Ramirez, Luna Blaise, Jack Messina, Parveen Kaur, Matt Long, and Holly Taylor.
In October 2018, NBC ordered further episodes for the first season, and subsequently renewed the show for a second season that aired in 2020, and again for a third in 2021. In June 2021, the series was canceled by NBC after three seasons. The series was added to Netflix in June 2021 and immediately topped the viewing charts, persuading Netflix to renew Manifest for a fourth and final season consisting of 20 episodes.[1]
Plot
While traveling from Jamaica to New York City, Montego Air Flight 828 experiences a brief period of severe turbulence. When they land at Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, New York, the plane's 191 passengers and crew learn from NSA deputy director Robert Vance that over five and a half years have passed while they were in the air, during which time they were presumed dead. As they rejoin society, the passengers begin to face the fact that their lives—and loved ones—are not the same as they were, while they also begin to experience guiding voices and visions representing events yet to occur, referred to as 'callings.'

The NSA takes control of the investigation, and Vance tries to compel Jared to keep him informed of Michaela's movements. Cal is upset to discover that his former best friend Kevin is dating Olive. Michaela is still traumatized by the death of her friend Evie, who was killed in a car wreck while Michaela was driving, for which Evie's parents Glen and Beverly blame Michaela. She visits Glen and Beverly and learns that Beverly has dementia while Glen is no longer angry at Michaela. Michaela later faces her fear of driving to find Beverly, who has wandered off, and saves her from being hit by a car. The driver is Christine, who is in possession of Kelly's missing necklace and later admits to killing her. Michaela tells Jared that something has changed in her that she cannot explain. Saanvi finds something unusual in Cal's blood, and then in her own, which is usually produced by an ischemic stroke. The NSA takes custody of Kelly's body.

He and Michaela review footage from the night the plane landed and see passengers loaded onto five buses, but only four arrived at their intended destination. The fifth bus contained eleven passengers who were foreign nationals, had no next of kin, or were otherwise individuals no one would report as missing. The buses were contracted by Unified Dynamic Systems (UDS), a large corporation involved in many industries. After getting some information from a translator, Michaela locates a farm where UDS is experimenting on the eleven passengers, but she and Jared are chased away by armed men. Ben confronts Vance about the missing passengers, believing the NSA is behind their disappearance and threatens to tell the press. Although Vance has dossiers on the eleven passengers showing they are accounted for, he leads a team to investigate the farm location. As their family settles back into a routine, a brick is thrown through their front window with Ben discovering a large red X painted on their front door. While getting supplies for Zeke, Michaela learns about Chloe, Zeke's younger sister, who had died earlier in the same area. If he retaliates against Cody again, neither he or Michaela can help him. Michaela and Zeke follow a calling to Chloe's memorial, where they build a cairn to pay their respects. Meanwhile, Saanvi tells Ben that Zeke has the same blood marker they do, based on the sample he brought her. As Saanvi leaves her research lab, she too finds a large red X painted on her lab door. Grace and Ben begin to reconcile. Michaela and Zeke find a rudimentary rock painting — a petrograph — of two people standing under three stars, just as dark lightning forms in the sky.

Michaela admits to her affair with Jared to Lourdes. Ben and Michaela head to Alice's house, where they find and rescue Saanvi. Adrian, the leader of the Church of the Returned and a Flight 828 passenger, admits to Ben that he does not believe what he is preaching and Ben scolds him for Alice's actions. Meanwhile, Saanvi develops PTSD symptoms in response to the incident with Alice. Zeke is arrested while trying to break into a townhouse, which he tells Michaela belongs to his mom. The FBI grants Griffin immunity for the murders committed during the robbery and they defuse a bomb in Midtown Manhattan using information he gives them. Olive and Ben calculate that Griffin died eighty-two hours and eight minutes after he returned – the same period of time he was gone. Ben calculates the Flight 828 passengers will all die on June 2, 2024, with Cal confirming he has had a vision of their deaths. Grace tells Ben she is pregnant, but that Danny is most likely the father. Dr. Matthews recommends a therapist to Saanvi for her PTSD, but the therapist turns out to be the Major. Jared confronts Zeke in Michaela's apartment, believing Zeke bought drugs in the alley. When Zeke reveals he actually bought a gun, Jared and Zeke engage in a fight. As Michaela returns to her apartment, the fight triggers a gunshot fired off-camera. |

Michaela states that she will not continue until she gets a union representative by her side. Jared confronts Simon about the situation. Simon says Michaela is a threat who must be disposed of. Cal's latest calling is shared with Ben, Grace, and a recuperating TJ, where they try to build something during what appears to be a thunderstorm outside. Thanks to some clues, they manage to pull together a makeshift ship's rigging, which briefly places them on an ancient boat from which they see Flight 828 in the sky; they also learn that the ancient mariners who tried to get rid of the callings went mad. At the hospital, Ben has to make a choice to save Grace or the baby as the specialist surgeon has not arrived yet, and he chooses Grace (against her wishes). It turns out the specialist surgeon who can save both Grace and the baby is the man rescued by Adrian. Despite this, Adrian tells Ben he still does not believe the callings are ultimately good. Jared is called to the bar where Billy and other Xers are holding Zeke captive. Simon arrives with Erika and orders Zeke to be killed, which is heard by Michaela and others through the bug. She later learns from the bodega owner that Oscar also stole a large quantity of cold medication known to be used to cook methamphetamine. Michaela works with Jared to follow Oscar's steps, resulting in a bust at a meth lab run by ex-con Jace Baylor. Jace and his brother Pete were in cahoots with the bus driver Kory, who drove the bus that Oscar got on. At the lab, Michaela gets another calling to "let him go", but has to ignore it when Jace reaches for a weapon. A pedestrian notifies a patrol officer of the bag Michaela left behind, botching the trade as Jace flees with Cal. Zeke has a calling which helps them locate Cal in the Catskill Mountains. At a remote cabin, Pete frees Cal. Michaela, Ben and Zeke approach the cabin as Cal leads the three criminals onto a frozen lake. All fall through the ice, but Zeke jumps in, saves Cal, then dies. Elsewhere, Saanvi ignores Vance's requests and tracks down The Major, poisoning her in hopes of gathering information. As the two struggle, the sole vial of antidote breaks and The Major dies. Ben has another calling in which Flight 828 explodes and crashes into the ocean. To Jared's disbelief, divers are unable to locate the bodies of the three criminals in the frozen lake. A Cuban fishing boat recovers the tail of Flight 828 from the ocean, as a dumbfounded fisherman claims it is from the plane that returned. |

Vance shows Ben and Saanvi old security video of the tailfin vanishing and Saanvi recognizes the time stamp on the screen as when she killed Fitz, the same day Zeke rescued Cal and beat the death date. Ben enters a secure area and sees the body of 828 passenger Kelly Taylor in an experimental container, remembering she was shot and killed over a year ago. He learns the body no longer shows a bullet wound, but has injuries consistent with a plane crash. Coupled with the return of the tailfin to the Caribbean, Ben says science now proves the passengers died on the plane. Zeke discovers his callings have changed, when he feels exactly what Beverly is feeling during an episode. He later uses this ability to get Pete to reveal that his high school football coach named Hannity was forcing Jace, Kory and himself to deal drugs, which resulted in a teammate's death. Using his pending death date as leverage, Michaela gets Pete to reveal that Jace is going to Coach Hannity's house right now. Michaela arrives to find Kory has been shot by Jace for trying to stop him, while Jace fled. At Kory's prodding, Michaela finds drugs in a vent and arrests Coach Hannity. Jared continues getting closer to the truth and is abducted by Emmett under the alias of Special Agent Fisher while Saanvi starts to understand the consequences of her choices; Jared is fed a story about Fitz being taken out by an enemy spy which Vance reveals is how he covered up her murder to everyone, including the government. With only a day left until his death date, Jace goes on a bloody rampage trying to get revenge on Michaela and Pete is taken to Eureka to have tests run upon him. In Jace's trailer, Michaela finds a drawing that matches part of the ancient parchment on Maat. Levi suggests that it is a depiction of an ancient test called The Last Trial which featured three criminals whose stories match Jace, Kory and Pete. The story suggests that if Jace forgives Michaela and seeks redemption instead of vengeance, he will be spared. In exchange for Vance allowing Pete to help Michaela confront Jace at the lake, Ben agrees to allow Eureka to experiment upon him. After Tarik brags at a bar about the 828-themed restaurant he wants to open with Grace, the family's location is revealed on the internet by a reporter who overheard Tarik's pitch. While searching for Jace, Zeke is knocked unconscious, leaving an oblivious Michaela alone in her search.

Convinced that his survival is connected to Cal, Jace kicks Michaela off of a cliff and goes after Cal. Michaela is later rescued by Zeke and Jared. Due to the family's whereabouts being revealed, the tires on both of their cars are slashed, stranding Tarik, Grace and Cal and revealing their location when Jace hears the call about the vandalism on Michaela's police car radio. At Tarik's house, Jace ambushes the family, Pete, and Angelina when they arrive to help. Jace tells Pete that he believes the resurrections and death dates are all connected to Cal, so if Cal dies, they'll continue to live. Jace kills Tarik leading a vengeful Grace to attempt to kill him while Kory arrives to protect Cal. With time almost out, Ben convinces Grace to not shoot, and Jace soon spews lake water and dies. Pete and Kory's injuries heal and they remain alive, seemingly beating the death date. Michaela promises to help Pete get early release in a couple of years for his good deeds, and Angelina promises to wait for him. After Olive stops the parchment from being taken away by two men, someone returns Ben's bag containing the final missing piece that Eagan had stolen. The parchment reveals that as the three men were resurrected together, they are being judged together. Michaela, Eagan, and several other 828 passengers get a calling of a dark cloud over the east wing of the building that houses the Eureka team, then they see Ben leaving the building. Eagan and two others kidnap Ben with Eagan pressing him on what is going on in the building. Ben admits he's allowed himself to be a research subject. He says the east wing is a loading dock and agrees to investigate while also telling Eagan about the three meth heads and how everyone from 828 is "in the same lifeboat". Michaela and Drea locate Ben when it turns out that the house they were in doesn't belong to Eagan. By then, he has already agreed to work with Eagan; Ben later bails him out and informs him not to do anything he'll regret. Cal deals with guilt over Tarik's death knowing why Jace was there, while Angelina has similar feelings about Pete's death. Jared gets closer with Sarah Fitz. Saanvi makes a discovery about different metallic compounds found in people that have returned and died recognizing them as materials in sapphire. Gupta later decides to retain Saanvi following her breakthrough, then has something to show her in a sealed container.

The object in the container is a piece of wood, thought to be several thousand years old, that is coated with the same minerals as 828 passengers. Ben and Michaela follow similar callings which lead them to 828 passenger Rachel Hall. Rachel's ex-husband Jonah married her sister Hannah during Rachel's 5+ years absence, but things are not what they seem. Rachel's anger is not with her sister, but with her abusive ex-husband whom she's learned is also abusing Hannah. Ben intervenes to stop Rachel from murdering Jonah. Due to Ben setting off the silent alarm, all three of them are arrested by the police. Michaela is angry with Ben for putting himself in danger, but he says it was necessary to preserve the 828 "lifeboat". As Jonah is being booked, Hannah has agreed to testify on Rachel's behalf. Saanvi determines the ancient wood is about 6,000 years old and contains some animal DNA, later learned to be from a peacock. When Gupta says the wood was expelled from a long-dormant volcano that is revealed to be on Mount Ararat, she and Saanvi discuss the possibility that it could be from Noah's Ark. Elsewhere, Angelina seems to be able to calm Eden whenever she's crying, and Cal tries to use Zeke's empathy power to determine if a girl at school likes him. Also, Michaela and Drea notice that Jared is becoming romantic with Sarah Fitz.

Ben and Eagan get similar dark cloud callings, except Eagan's has a lion. Michaela looks in a mirror and sees blood coming from her eyes. Eagan works with Ben, when they both see a lion with bleeding eyes and then see that Saanvi's photo on Ben's wall is wet. Saanvi has been running experiments bombarding the ancient wood with a dark lightning simulator, when her eyes start to bleed. Ben hears of it and asks Olive, who is working with Levi, if she can research anything about lions with bleeding eyes. She and Levi uncover a legend that suggests the eyes are a symbol of deception. Eagan and Ben see a glowing copy of Al-Zuras's journal, which Ben picks up. Michaela visits Saanvi, whose condition has medical experts stumped, and gets her to admit to killing The Major with Vance and Emmett covering it up. Saanvi's eyes immediately clear up. Gupta then shows Saanvi slo-mo footage of her latest experiment, which shows the ancient wood disappeared for some milliseconds before reappearing. Elsewhere, Zeke's empathy powers lead him to believe that Jared and Sarah make a good couple with Sarah helping out Beverly. Angelina irritates Olive by trying to look and act like her. Ben tells Grace the latest callings likely mean the 828 lifeboat is already taking on water. He looks at the ancient mariners drowning in one of the Al-Zuras drawings, and ponders if the victims sacrificed themselves for the greater good or were thrown overboard.

Saanvi's latest experiment on the ancient wood causes a rare earthquake to hit New York. When Saanvi sees TV news coverage of a fissure in a road with lava underneath, right at the epicenter of the quake, she's convinced that Mount Ararat has come to New York to reclaim the piece of Noah's Ark. She and Troy engineer a ruse in the next experiment to cause an explosion that leaves only a pile of dust, when in reality they have removed the wood from the building. Ben goes to see 828 passenger Astrid, whose photo was in flames during his and Cal's calling. Astrid has received a calling of a boy in danger, who turns out to be the son of known anti-828er Cody Webber whom Ben encountered before and has since received a restraining order not to go within certain feet of him. Ben assaults Webber again when he won't reveal where he's hidden his son. Michaela and Jared break up the conflict as Michaela and Astrid are able to rescue the child from earthquake debris. Jared says he has to arrest Ben for the assault, and Michaela reluctantly agrees. At the Stone home, an incident during the earthquake has Angelina believing that Eden is her guardian angel. Cal agrees that he, Angelina and Eden all have a connection. However, when Angelina puts her theory to the test, she starts a fire that forces Grace to evict her much to Cal's objection. At the site of the road fissure, Troy and Cooper cause a distraction, allowing Saanvi to toss the ancient wood into the lava. The lava disappears and the pavement returns. Immediately, Cal gets another Calling.

Ben has his arraignment and expects to plead guilty and present the extenuating circumstances of what happened with Cody Webber, but he draws an anti-828 judge and pleads not guilty. The judge sets an enormous bail and has Ben placed on house arrest, forcing Grace to retrieve her restaurant deposit and mortgage the house to pay the bond. Ben and Michaela learn that government agencies in the U.S. and around the world are tightening the reins on 828 passengers. This comes to a head when it's learned that a passenger was just executed in Singapore. Ben, Michaela, Cal, and several other 828-ers have callings of being on fire. Michaela believes it's partly because Saanvi hasn't yet turned herself in, which puts her at odds with Ben on the decision to arrest her. Saanvi makes a stop at Project Eureka before seeing Michaela. After confessing to Vance about the driftwood, she sees they are now experimenting on the tailfin, which she believes will cause an even greater catastrophe. When Saanvi makes it to the police station, Michaela turns in her badge and whisks her away upon hearing the latest development from Bowers. Ben is released from jail and is talking with Vance when an apprehended Eagan sees him and explodes with rage. It's revealed that the NYPD has also arrested Adrian, who had been underground since the club fire. At Angelina's urging, Cal shows up at the gates of Project Eureka asking to see the tailfin.

After learning from Vance that Cal is at Eureka, Olive puts on Ben's ankle monitor so that Ben and Grace can go get Cal. They find out that Cal has a calling that's burning his skin and it won't stop until Eureka stops testing on the tailfin. Saanvi keeps Cal under treatment while Ben and Grace beg Dr. Gupta to stop the testing. Ben wants to destroy the tailfin but gets a calling revealing that he needs to return it to the ocean. Vance tries to intervene but Gupta gets authorization to continue testing from the headquarters. Cal tells them that Gupta needs to see in order to believe. He touches the tailfin and disappears. Meanwhile, Michaela gets a shared calling with Bethany, Eagan and Adrian where Flight 828 is bleeding blood everywhere and concludes that it is a warning uabout someone dying. She asks them for help to solve the calling before someone dies but Eagan and Adrian refuse to help.

To get Cal back, Ben and Vance plan to steal the tailfin while Grace and Olive piece together Cal's drawings for clues. Recognizing a constellation in the drawings as a sign from her late grandmother, Dr. Gupta allows them to take the tailfin. Eagan and Adrian incite a group of passengers, including Angelina, claiming that the Stones are working with the NSA. This results in Eagan and another passenger holding Vance's son hostage. Michaela's calling leads her, Zeke, Drea and Jared to Vance's house. They call Vance who comes over to help save his son. Jared figures out that Saanvi killed the Major and Michaela knew about it. After risking her life to help Ben return the tailfin to the ocean, Saanvi redeems herself and starts getting callings again. Her shared calling with Ben and Michaela reveals that someone is still in danger and they need to get home fast. Inspired by Adrian to go to her guardian angel, Angelina stabs Grace and kidnaps Eden. Cal returns as an adult and holds his dying mother, saying, "It's okay, I know what we need to do now." As Dr. Gupta is leaving Eureka, Flight 828 Captain Bill Daly suddenly reappears in the cockpit at Eureka, then disappears with the last remains of the aircraft. |

Production
Development
On August 23, 2017, NBC gave the production a put pilot commitment. The pilot was written by Jeff Rake, who was also set to serve as executive producer alongside Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke. Jackie Levine was expected to serve as a co-executive producer. Production companies involved with the pilot were slated to consist of Compari Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television.[55] In January 2018, NBC gave the production a pilot order[56] and that David Frankel would direct and executive produce the pilot.[57] In May 2018, NBC gave the production a series order of thirteen episodes[58] with a premiere in third quarter of 2018 and a Monday timeslot at 10 p.m.[59] On June 19, 2018, the series premiere was set for September 24, 2018.[60] On October 18, 2018, NBC ordered an additional three episodes of the series, bringing the total up to sixteen episodes.[61][62]
On April 15, 2019, NBC renewed the series for a second season, which premiered on January 6, 2020.[63][64] On June 15, 2020, NBC renewed the series for a third season which premiered on April 1, 2021.[65][66]
Casting
In February 2018, Josh Dallas, Melissa Roxburgh, and J. R. Ramirez joined the pilot's main cast.[67][68] Athena Karkanis, Parveen Kaur, and Luna Blaise were cast in main roles the following month.[69][70] In August 2019, Yasha Jackson, Garrett Wareing, Andrene Ward-Hammond, and Ellen Tamaki were cast in recurring roles for the second season.[8][6] In October 2019, Leah Gibson and Carl Lundstedt had been cast in recurring capacities.[9] On September 22, 2020, Holly Taylor was cast a new series regular for the third season.[3] On October 22, 2020, Will Peltz was cast in a recurring role for the third season.[10]
Cancellation and revival
On June 14, 2021, NBC canceled the series after three seasons.[71] Due to the cliffhanger ending to season 3 and the fact that creator Jeff Rake originally sold Manifest to NBC with a six-season plan mapped out, Rake and others were hopeful that the series would get picked up by another platform. One possibility was Netflix, where the first two seasons of Manifest debuted in the #3 spot and quickly rose to the most watched show on the streaming service. Rake tweeted on June 15: "I am devastated by NBC's decision to cancel us. That we've been shut down in the middle is a gut punch to say the least. Hoping to find a new home. You fans deserve an ending to your story."[71] On June 21, 2021, Warner announced that negotiations with Netflix had broken down and that they would no longer be seeking a new home for the series.[72] The following week, Rake followed-up on the status quo regarding the series' proper conclusion, stating that: "We're trying to find a way to conclude the series. Could take a week, a month, a year. But we're not giving up. You deserve an end to the story."[73]
On June 30, 2021, Entertainment Weekly reported that Rake was now looking for a platform that would bankroll a two-hour Manifest film that would cut to the chase and tie up all the loose ends from the third season finale. Said Rake, "There is a huge appetite for people wanting to know what's that end of the story, what happened to the passengers, what ultimately happened to that airplane."[74][75]
The following month, however, it was reported that talks had resumed between Warner Bros. Television and NBC regarding the series' renewal for a potential fourth season, with Netflix also taking part in the renewal discussions.[76] On August 28, 2021, Netflix renewed Manifest for a fourth and final season, consisting of 20 episodes, split across multiple parts. Dallas and Roxburgh were set to return, with additional original cast members in negotiations to return as well.[1] On September 9, 2021, it reported that Kaur, Blaise, Taylor return as series regulars alongside Dallas, Roxburgh, and Ramirez while Karkanis and Messina exited and Ty Doran was promoted to series regular taking over Messina's role as the older Cal.[2] A day later, it was announced that Daryl Edwards has been promoted to series regular.[4]
Release
On July 21, 2018, the series held a panel at San Diego Comic-Con in San Diego, California. Those in attendance included executive producer Jeff Rake and actors Melissa Roxburgh and Josh Dallas.[77] On August 28, 2018, the first nine minutes of the first episode were released among various digital outlets.[78] The series also took part in the 12th Annual PaleyFest Fall Television Previews on September 10, 2018, which featured a preview screening of the series.[79]
Reception
Critical response
The series was met with a mixed response from critics upon its premiere. On the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, the first season holds an approval rating of 56% with an average rating of 6.2/10, based on 39 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "Manifest's attempts to balance supernatural mystery and melodrama largely work thanks to its well-chosen cast — though it could use a few more distinguishing characteristics."[80] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the series a score of 55 out of 100 based on 15 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews."[81]
In a more positive assessment, USA Today's Kelly Lawler explained how she felt that the series' simplicity and variety of drama subgenres might help it outlast similarly themed but ultimately unsuccessful past shows. She further praised the series for maintaining the standard of quality it set with its premiere episode saying, "Heavily serialized shows, such as Lost, Breaking Bad, or Game of Thrones often start with a great concept and first episode. But many lesser shows collapse when the story expands. Manifest navigated through its first major roadblock by easily moving from the setup to meatier stories."[82] In another favorable evaluation, Variety's Daniel D'Addario commented that the pilot didn't "pretend to have answers; it only poses questions. But its inquisitiveness and willingness to be bold and fairly uncynical given all the things it's trying to be is more than welcome."[83] In a mixed critique, Los Angeles Times's Lorraine Ali remarked that the series had a compelling premise and that the many mysteries it introduced "point toward a potentially addictive series if Manifest allows its gripping supernatural narrative to rise above its characters' less interesting personal dramas."[84] In a negative review, The Washington Post's Hank Stuever compared the series negatively to other network science fiction series saying, "Manifest, alas, beelines thoughtlessly toward its hokiest idea, when some of the returning passengers discover they've acquired psychic powers. Just like that, a viewer who might have been interested in the human element is instead served a cold plate of mystery meat — not the new Lost, but a feeble throwback to forgettable failures such as The Event."[85] In a similarly dismissive appraisal, The New York Times' Margaret Lyons commented that "Manifest has a frustrating lack of propulsion, a central dullness whose force field is so strong it bends all the interesting parts toward itself."[86]
