The 1973–74 season was Paris Saint-Germain Football Club's 4th season in existence and 2nd season in Division 2, the second tier of French football. The club also competed in the Coupe de France.[1] PSG played its home matches mainly at Stade Municipal Georges Lefèvre in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, but occasionally at Parc des Princes and Stade Jean-Bouin (both in Paris) as well, registering an average attendance of 4,087 spectators per match.[1][2] Additionally, the Parisians played one French Cup home game at Stade Moulonguet in Amiens.[1] The club was presided by Daniel Hechter, and the team was managed by Just Fontaine, who replaced Robert Vicot before the start of the season.[1][3] French midfielder Jean-Pierre Dogliani was the team captain, replacing Camille Choquier.[4]

Paris Saint-Germain really took flight when fashion designer Daniel Hechter took over and offered his financial support to the club.[5][6] Shortly before the start of the campaign, he replaced Henri Patrelle as president and named Francis Borelli as vice-president.[6][7] Hechter then shocked the national game. He appointed French legend Just Fontaine as manager in place of Robert Vicot, who became assistant manager until 1975, and signed several prestigious players like Jean-Pierre Dogliani, Jean Deloffre and Louis Cardiet.[8][9]

The Parisians finished second in Group B of the 1973–74 French Division 2 and qualified for the promotion playoffs. Valenciennes won 2–1 at home, but the capital club recorded an incredible 4–2 comeback in the second game, thus sealing its spot in the 1974–75 French Division 1 and regaining its professional status abandoned two years earlier.[8][10] Since then, PSG have always played in the top flight.[10] The club's tradition of brilliant Coupe de France runs also started in the 1973–74 edition. PSG reached the quarterfinals after beating Metz at Parc des Princes in front of 25,000 spectators, before being ousted by Stade de Reims.[7]
