Baldwin or Balduin is an Old German and Anglo-Saxon surname. It may either derive from Bealdwine, or the Old German equivalent Baldavin, meaning "brave, bold friend".
It is found in many other modern European languages: French Beaudoin or Baudouin, Italian Baldovino, Dutch Boudewijn, Icelandic Baldvin, Spanish and Esperanto Balduino.[1]
