Adwoa Caitlin Maria Aboah[3][4][5] (born 18 May 1992) is a British fashion model. In December 2017 she appeared on the cover of British Vogue.[6] She has also been on the cover of American Vogue, Vogue Italia, Vogue Poland, and i-D.[7][8][9] In 2017, the fashion industry voted her as Model of the Year for models.com.[10]
Early life
Adwoa Aboah was born in Westminster, London, England, to Charles Aboah and Camilla Lowther.[11] The Lowther family, headed by the Earl of Lonsdale, are members of the British nobility. Aboah's maternal great-grandfather was Anthony Lowther, Viscount Lowther. Her father was born and raised in Ghana, and emigrated to England.[12] Adwoa means "born on Monday" (she was born on a Monday).[13]
Both Aboah's parents are involved in the fashion industry, as a location scout and photography agent respectively.[14][15][16] Her sister Kesewa is also a model. Educated at Millfield, Aboah later graduated from Brunel University in 2013, with a bachelor's degree in Modern Drama.[17]
Career
Aboah has modeled for Calvin Klein, Fendi,[18] DKNY, Alexander Wang,[19] Theory, H&M,[20] Aldo,[21] Versus (Versace), Topshop,[22] Fenty x Puma,[23] Kenzo, Simone Rocha, and Erdem among others.[24][25][26][27][28][29]
Aboah has an organisation for young women called Gurls Talk.[30][31][32]
She played Lia in the 2017 Hollywood adaptation of the Japanese manga Ghost in the Shell.[33]
She was featured in a 2018 commercial for Revlon's PhotoReady Insta-Filter™ Foundation.[34] Aboah was named British GQ's 'Woman of the Year' for 2017.[35]
Currently, she is on the list of top 50 female models by models.com. [36]
Personal life
Aboah has suffered from depression and drug addiction and is now sober.[37][38] She self-medicated with drugs from a young age due to depression.[37] She attempted suicide by overdose in 2015 at a rehab centre in London, which resulted in a four-day coma before recovering in a psychiatric hospital.[38]
