Black Star Riders is an rock supergroup formed in December 2012. The group was formed when members of Thin Lizzy decided to record new material, but chose not to release it under the Thin Lizzy name out of respect to the legacy of that band's leader, Phil Lynott. While Thin Lizzy will continue on an occasional basis, Black Star Riders will be a full-time band.[1]

Black Star Riders consists of Thin Lizzy members Scott Gorham and Damon Johnson on guitar, bass guitarist Marco Mendoza and Northern Irish vocalist / guitarist Ricky Warwick. The other two Thin Lizzy members, drummer Brian Downey and keyboard player Darren Wharton, chose not to participate – Downey decided to take a break from full-time touring and Wharton wanted to concentrate on his own band Dare and a film project.[1] Wharton has not been replaced (although this may change in future), but the group's drummer will be Jimmy DeGrasso, who previously worked with Megadeth, Suicidal Tendencies and Alice Cooper among others.

The band will be recording their debut album with producer Kevin Shirley in Los Angeles during January 2013, with a release date set for May. Appearances at festivals will follow in the summer of 2013, followed by a worldwide tour. In an interview in December 2012, Gorham confirmed that the new group would still pay homage to their Thin Lizzy origins: "Obviously because everybody knows where we came from and what we do, it is kind of a must. We will be playing most of the Black Star Riders album but I don't think we'd get away without playing a few Thin Lizzy songs."[1]
