It was announced in May 2020 that Tom Cruise, in collaboration with NASA and SpaceX, would star in a film that would shoot in outer space. Doug Liman was announced to direct the film later in the month.[4][5] In July, Universal Pictures purchased the film, with a budget of $200 million. Christopher McQuarrie was announced as a producer.[6] In September 2020, it was announced Cruise and Liman were to be aboard a tourist mission to space in October 2021.[7] By October 2022, Cruise and Liman had yet to make the trip, though Universal were still hopeful this would occur.[8]
