Ilya Yuryevich Shagalov (Russian: Илья Юрьевич Шагалов; born 14 December 1986) is a Russian video artist and theater director. He is known for his work at the Gogol Center, the Moscow Art Theatre, and the Staatsoper Stuttgart. Shagalov has directed both film and stage productions, including the 2022 feature film Aquarium. He is a member of Kirill Serebrennikov's ‘Seventh Studio’.

Early Life and Education

Shagalov was born in Krasnodar. He graduated from the Krasnodar State Institute of Culture in 2008 with a degree in theater and drama. He later attended the Moscow Art Theatre School, where he studied under renowned director Kirill Serebrennikov. His classmates included directors and actors such as Evgenia Berkovich, Alexander Gorchilin, and Filipp Avdeyev.


Career

Shagalov began his career as a video artist in 2004, and by 2013, he had become a regular collaborator at the Gogol Center in Moscow, working closely with Kirill Serebrennikov. He has worked on numerous theatrical and operatic productions, such as Salome at the Staatsoper Stuttgart and Hänsel und Gretel at the same opera house.

In addition to his theater work, Shagalov directed the feature film Aquarium in 2022, which was well received at international film festivals.

Professional Activity

Shagalov’s work spans across various forms of performing arts, including video art, stage directing, and set design. He collaborated with the Platforma project from 2011 to 2014, where he created independent projects such as *Concert-Compass* and *End of a Beautiful Era*. His productions are noted for their integration of video technology and multimedia in live performances.

He has collaborated with well-known directors such as Konstantin Bogomolov and Maxim Didenko on several high-profile projects. His directorial works include Venus in Furs (Estonia), We by Yevgeny Zamyatin (France), and The Dragon (Moscow).
