Eega (titled Naan Ee in Tamil; [Fly] Error: {{Lang-xx}}: text has italic markup (help), [I'm a Fly] Error: {{Lang-xx}}: text has italic markup (help)) is an Indian bilingual socio fantasy film written and directed by S S Rajamouli, made simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil languages. It stars Sudeep, Samantha and Nani. M. M. Keeravani composed the film's music while K. K. Senthil Kumar handled cinematography and Kotagiri Venkateswara Rao helmed the editing.

The state of the art Visual effects were supervised by Rahul Venugopal, Adel Adili and Pete Draper. The film's Telugu and Tamil version along with a dubbed Malayalam version released on July 6, 2012 with over 1200 prints.[3][4] Upon release, it received rave reviews in all three languages.[5]

Plot

Nani (Nani) is a really nice and persistent guy who makes fireworks and lives in a house opposite Bindu (Samantha), with whom he has been in love for two years. He has been constantly showing his love for Bindu, but she has been playing hard to get, and although Bindu loves him back, she doesn't show it. Bindu is also a micro artist and she runs a charity group. Meanwhile, Sudeep (Sudeep) is a multi-millionaire who also happens to be a womanizer, and he horribly killed his wife for her money. One day, Bindu goes to Sudeep to see if he would like to donate to her NGO (charity), and Sudeep was about to send her away, until he sees Bindu through the opening of a door. He immediately lusts for her, and calls her into his office. An unknowing Bindu tells Sudeep all about her charity, and Sudeep donates 15 lakhs to her NGO. Bindu thanks him, and later, Sudeep asks her to lunch.

When they go, Bindu sees Nani installing fireworks across the street, and Sudeep notices this. Later, when Sudeep and Bindu stop at a market, Nani comes and walks with Bindu. A jealous Sudeep follows them the whole time. Afterwards, Bindu was working late at night, and she needed an escort home, so she calls Nani, who comes to her, and walks her home. At this point, Nani gives Bindu an idea to help finish a necklace she was working on, and Bindu is ready to finally confess her love towards Nani. But then, right in front of her doorstep, while Bindu is still in her house, Sudeep kidnaps Nani, beats him up, and tells him that he loves Bindu. Nani tells Sudeep that if he goes anywhere near Bindu, he will kill him. At this, Sudeep ruthlessly kills Nani, right after Bindu tells Nani she loves him through a text and a phone call. Upon hearing that Bindu loves him too, Nani dies. But then, he is reborn as a fly.

After getting used to his new life as a fly, and experimenting with his new abilities, Nani, who is now a fly, ends up in Sudeep's office. After he sees Sudeep, Nani remembers his past life, and he wants to kill Sudeep. He starts bugging Sudeep to no end, and Sudeep gets paranoid about the fly. Later, as Bindu is grieving Nani's death, Sudeep still tries to get Bindu to like him as more than a friend. Later, Nani, The Fly, uses Bindu's tears on her desk to write out the words, "I am Nani". He then shows Bindu that it was Sudeep who killed him, and that he was reborn as a fly. Bindu, now teams up with Nani to make Sudeep's life a living hell, and they both try to kill him. In the end, they succeed, but Nani, The Fly, dies. But he is shown back as a fly again in his third birth, and eternally protecting the love of his life, Bindu, forever.

Cast

Production

The film was launched in 2010, with Rajamouli deciding to shoot the film simultaneously in Telugu (as Eega) and Tamil (Naan Ee). Nani and Samantha were selected for the lead roles, while Kannada actor Sudeep was chosen to portray a negative role.[6] Rajamouli roped in Santhanam for the Tamil version.[7] Reports suggesting that Kajal Aggarwal would perform an item number were denied by Rajamouli.[8] James Floyd was originally announced as the cameraman but he was replaced by Rajamouli's norm cameraman K. K. Senthil Kumar.[9]

The unit used a Scorpio Crane for the first time in the history of Telugu cinema. The climax portion was shot at Ramanaidu studios.[10] Completion of first schedule led producer to arrange a party.[11] A huge set was erected at the Saradhi Studios.[12]

Release

The film was initially planned to be released in May 2012 but due to extensive CGI and VFX work, it got delayed.Release of the film was again postponed from 22 June because the unit is striving 24/7 for the quality of CG.[13] The film was censored on 26 June and received an U/A rating by the Central Board of Film Certification.[14] Both the Telugu and Tamil versions were released on July 6, 2012.[15] The film was reported to be dubbed and released in Malayalam and Hindi also.[16] The Malayalam version titled as Eecha released simultaneously along with the Telugu and Tamil versions.[17] Distribution rights were sold for 34 crores.[18]

Sequel

After the unusual and overwhelming success of Eega, the makers of the movie and team Rajamouli are reportedly considering the idea of making a sequel. Apparently, the idea came up during a recent meeting and a feasibility study is being conducted about the same. While the idea is still a very early stage, both D.Suresh Babu and Sai Korrapati are said to be extremely pleased with the idea of a sequel.[34]

Soundtrack

Untitled

The soundtrack of the film was composed by M. M. Keeravani, usual associate of Rajamouli. The audio was released on March 30, 2012 at Brahama Kumari's Academy in Gachibowli, Hyderabad. It was released through Vel Records, owned by M. M. Keeravani. Ramajogayya Sastry, Anantha Sreeram, Chaitanya Prasad and Keeravani penned one song each in the album; all songs in the Tamil version were written by Madhan Karky.
