Face Yourself is the third Japanese studio album (fifth overall) by South Korean boy band BTS, which was released on April 4, 2018. The album consists of 12 tracks in total, eight being the Japanese versions of songs previously released on their 2016 album Wings and 2017 EP Love Yourself: Her, and three original Japanese-language tracks: "Don't Leave Me", "Let Go", and "Crystal Snow", the latter one of which was first released in December 2017.[1] Its debut at number 43 on the Billboard 200 made it the third-highest-charting Japanese album in the history of the chart.[2] It is their first Japanese album to be certified Platinum by the RIAJ.[3]

Background and release

"Crystal Snow" was first released on December 6, 2017, as part of a triple A-side single album with the Japanese versions of "Mic Drop" and "DNA".[4][5]

The album was first announced on February 1, 2018, as well as its April 4 release date and three limited editions. New Japanese recordings of the tracks "Go Go" and "Best of Me" from BTS's 2017 Korean EP Love Yourself: Her were also revealed in a tentative tracklist.[6] A complete tracklist was later released on March 8.[7] The same day, the song "Don't Leave Me" was announced as the opening theme song for the Japanese drama Signal, a remake of the 2016 South Korean television series of the same name.[8] A preview of the song was aired on March 15, causing it to chart on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 prior to its official release, peaking at number 25.[9][10]

Commercial performance

The album debuted at number 1 on Oricon's Daily CD Album chart.[11] It remained in the top spot for seven consecutive days, which resulted in its coming in at number 1 on the Weekly Album chart with over 282,000 accumulated units sold,[12] breaking a six-year-five-month-long record, previously held by KARA, for the highest first-week sales by a Korean artist on the Oricon chart, and making it the highest-grossing album by a male artist on the Oricon chart for 2018 so far.[13][14] The album dropped down from its spot atop the Daily chart to number 12 on its eighth day of charting,[15] but surged back up over the course of the following weeks, reaching as high as number 2.[16] It spent thirteen successive weeks on the Oricon chart,[11] with 324,381 accumulated units sold,[11][17] and received Platinum certification by the RIAJ on May 10.[3]

In June, Oricon revealed that Face Yourself and BTS had made the top ten of their "Album Ranking" and "Artist Sales Ranking" charts for the first half of 2018, coming in at fourth and sixth respectively. They were the only Korean artist to rank on both charts, and the highest ranking international artist as well.[18]
