The Friendship Medal (Chinese: 友谊勋章; pinyin: Yǒuyì Xūnzhāng) is, alongside the Order of the Republic, the People's Republic of China's highest order of honour. On December 27, 2015, the National People's Congress Standing Committee (NPCSC) passed a law establishing two national medals, the Order of the Republic and the Friendship Medal, constituted on January 1, 2016.

The Friendship Medal set up by the State is bestowed on foreigners who have made outstanding contributions to China's socialist modernization, the promotion of exchange and cooperation between China and foreign countries, and the protection of world peace.[1][2]

The first Friendship Medal was awarded by President Xi Jinping to Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, on June 8, 2018.[citation needed]

History

Appearance

The "Friendship Medal" of the People's Republic of China is mainly coloured in gold and blue; the body of the medal adopts the elements of peace dove, earth, handshake and lotus flower; the chain of the medallion adopts the elements of Chinese knot, peony, jade and orchid; the whole medallion is handmade by traditional crafts such as filigree inlay and silk-pinching enamel.[3] It symbolizes the friendship and solidarity between the Chinese people and other peoples, and wishes for the common prosperity and development of all countries in the world.
